  7. Humpty Dumpty was a powerful cannon during the English Civil War (1642-49).

It was mounted on top of the St Mary's at the Wall Church in Colchester defending the city against siege in the summer of 1648. (Although Colchester was a Parliamentarian stronghold, it had been captured by the Royalists and they held it for 11 weeks.) The church tower was hit by the enemy and the top of the tower was blown off, sending "Humpty" tumbling to the ground. Naturally the King's men* tried to mend him but in vain."

    * NB: The "men" would have been infantry, and "horses" the cavalry troops.

  9. Take your pick...

It comes from the nine cubic yards capacity

of US concrete trucks and dates from around 1970s.

The explanation refers to World War II aircraft, which if proved correct would clearly pre-date the concrete truck version. There are several aircraft related sources, 1. the length of US bombers bomb racks, 2. the length of RAF Spitfire's machine gun bullet belts, 3. the length of ammunition belts in ground based anti-aircraft turrets, etc. No evidence to show that any of these measured nine yards has been forthcoming.

Tailors use nine yards of material for top quality suits. Related to 'dressed to the nines'?

The derivation has even been suggested as being naval and that the yards are shipyards rather than measures of area or volume.

Another naval version is that the yards are yardarms. Large sailing ships had three masts, each with three yardarms. The theory goes that ships in battle can continue changing direction as new sails are unfurled. Only when the last sail, on the ninth yardarm, is used do the enemy know which direction the ship is finally headed.

  10. Not taking the fishing gear Judy...what ever will you do for relaxation. Ah I know if you are going to Nottingham Centre parcs take some bread and feed the carp on the big lake. That kept me amused for hours.

I also really enjoyed walking barefoot on the heated floor...ohhh exctasy!!!

  11. I heard an interesting one today on the Radio about the origins of the word Dollar and its associated sign $. Seems it originated in Germany and was called a grubenshulerstaller (I made that name up as I cant remember the real one). But it ended in staller and was eventually corrupted into dollar and made its way to the americas via currency exchange and trading.

    Strange but true.

Theres nowt so queer as folk!

This won't get the baby washed

  12. Not stumped here...unlike the English Cricket team!

When the highways were being built through North America (USA), the stumps of trees being sawn down could be no more than 15 inches. This was fine for the high axle wagons until rains softened the soil. When this happened, the wagon would sink into the mud and was 'stumped'.

  13. Whisky...mm partial to a drop of glenmorangie I also like JD but thats not real whisky!.

Rum is another fav tipple, woods is nice but burns a bit on the way down. Over xmas I had for some reason lots of bottles of port and took to drinking that with lots of lemmonade, ice and a slice. Quite refreshing if somewhat rather effeminate!

The fishes eyes might look a bit odd as the picture has been squashed slightly during the mysterious process of avatar wizadry.

I can asure you the carp is quite normal and although I say it myself is rather handsome
