  1. Bought the little lad a sought after Liverpool shirt for £15.05, saved nearly £20. Experimented and found the 2nd code (£13.50 off) only valid for 1 purchase, but the other 2 seem to be valid permanently. I could always get a friend, or even her indoors to open an account and try again. Thanks for the info

  2. I have just got back from 2 weeks total relaxation on the Norfolk Broads. Before I went I got advice from good people on the forum, and took the printed pages with me, most useful.

The idea was to drive the boat around the Broads with the wife and three kids, girls aged 13 and 11 (12th birthday during the trip) , and a future England football captain aged 9 (no names or videos as I want to get the best agent deal ;). After a couple of days fishing off the front of the boat me and the lad were asked by the 11 year old if she could have a go. She enjoyed it so much she got an extra birthday present of a rod and reel, which she duly christened by catching 13 fish in the evening, whilst brother caught none. 1 up to the fairer sex methinks

We got a good tip from an angling store which was to store the maggots next to the gas cylinders to keep them cool and slow down the turning process. Had to wake them up before fishing as they really slowed down.

Fishing side by side we proved that the best bait was a single red maggot, using mixed maggots as loosefeed. A couple of times we fed balls of ground bait, but had to wait for the fish to find it

The fish were mainly roach and perch to about 4 ounces, with dad catching the biggest fish, a bream about 2 pounds before being called in for dinner. I think the shoal moved on during the fine repast provided by the in-boat catering staff, or at least that's my excuse

We moored up mainly at the free 24 hour moorings, or quiet spots far upstream. I did catch the Norwich Yacht station roach, and put it back for others to have a go at.

Little lad caught a roach at Coltishall, on the private mooring just on the bend downstream of the village, which was immediately attacked by a pike, which we had seen from the cabin window earlier. He applied a little too much pressure, and the pike released it. We reeled it in but the poor thing was as the dodo. We tossed it back in, to see the waiting pike hurl itself at it with an almighty swirl. The family are still talking about the event to this day.

Maggots seemd to vary in quality, so it's best to check them before buying. Some lasted only one day before turning, and one batch smelt like a sewage farm the next morning. I never tried the self service bait dispensers that I saw in several places, like outside a pub in Acle !

Looking over the side of the boat whilst in the upstream areas we saw many shoals of 2-3 inch fish, so the future looks good. We saw many people bagging up from the holiday chalets alongside the river. The whole family wanted to do the trip all over again on the last night.

Most tackle shops seemed to have friendly and helpful staff to buy tackle and put you on the fish. Beware of the tourist shops selling starter kits. I saw some obvious newcomers to the sport who had no chance of catching fish. Try to get a list of tackle shops before you go, as planning the next maggot fillup point can be crucial

Finally, I got as much pleasure from helping and watching my 2 kids fishing as I did in fishing myself. There was really only room for 2 at a time, and I had to be nearby for unhooking. Both kids put their own maggots on !!

Forgot to mention we used Mozzyoff and that kept the blighters at bay, although it smelt a bit

  3. Not an item of tackle, but a look at the calender. Got to the venue and wondered why I was the only one there. First day of the close season was on the notice at the gate. And I had booked a day's holiday as well. Felt a bit sheepish returning home at 06:00 to wake her up to explain !!!!

  4. I have just been given some of these self cocking floats. Instead of a little tail at the bottom, where I normally push on a silicon quick change adapter there is a little wire ring. What is the best way to attach the float to the line. Do I just thread the line through and lock it as normal, or is there a quick change adapter I could get

  5. I was lucky, as I only live a few minutes from the lake, so I rang the boss on the mobile, told her where it was and she brought it down with a fresh cup of coffee !! Some of us have all the luck :lol::D

  6. I am going there on a 2 week boating holiday with the family in August. Me and the future captain of the English football team (only 9 at the moment) want to do a bit of fishing. We fish lakes at the moment, and it's a long time since I did any river fishing. I have what used to be called a 13' match rod, and the lad has a 10' version. What methods are best, and what sort of baits. We intend to moor up as much as possible away from the popular pubs and suchlike, so we will be able to get a free bit of bank. Is it worth ledgering instead of float fishing. We don't want to break any records, just get a few fish in the net. Any comments and thoughts will be gratefully appreciated. :fishing1:

  7. Thames Water region of the EA issue a booklet, and have a downloadable PDF file you can print from the EA web site. This gives lots of free fishing ( EA licence needed!!). Basically most of the Thames downstream of Staines is free if you can get the landowners permission to reach the waterside.

  8. Gear maybe good, but the web site leaves a little to be desired. The competition page refers to winners for August September and October last year.

Des Taylors tips finish October 2002.

Not a good shop window to show a competent vendor methinks

    UUUM !!!

  9. Hammering in banksticks and then complaining about not getting a bite

Fish bite better when it rains. They don't but the angler does get wet

Calling sleeping in a tent (bivvy) fishing.

Buying remote sounder boxes, then sitting further away from the rods than the EA maximum

Being a crap fisherman and blaming the fish for not biting
