  1. The maxim of a tax (and the rod licence is a form of tax) is that not only should it be cheap to collect, but easy to police. Remember the old dog licence, it was about 7s 6d in real money, but no-one bothered to buy one. The police couldn't be bothered to ask dog owners for one, so it was abolished, as it cost more to sell than the return in revenue. If the EA licence went the same way, then the EA would need another source of funding. On the other hand, they would not need to spend time and effort chasing non-payers, and there would not be threads like this on various forums. Would it mean that we would spend more time and effort discussing fishing, and less taking the moral high ground pointing the finger at non-payers. I now go back below the skyline and await the flak.

  2. Some simple precautions

    1. Don't wear colours around the yellow spectrum

    2. Don't splash on aftershave or any sort of body perfume.

    3. Don't wear flowery clothing (hippies beware)

    4. Use a repellent, such as jungle formula, and take some with you as it is not effective all day.

    5. Sit the other half nearby using 1,2,3 and no 4

    :D:D:D

  3. I still use my 300s's, as I have a pair with 3 extra spools. 2 shallow spools and 3 deep spools in total. I have had them since the mid 1980's, with no problems. Can't think of a reason to change them, but maybe I won't change wat ain't broke. Still I like real ale and malt whiskey, and still measure things in feet and inches. I don't catch muh big stuff as I can't afford the price of the day ticket, but Carp to 15lbs are handled easily with them, matched to my handmade NW Blanks fibre glass rod :D:D:D

  4. If you programme in all the relevant numbers, you can contact home, emergency services (may not be you needs them, but the chap next to you), record fish committee :D:D , and all sorts of people you may need to help photograph the BIG ONE

  5. Did any see the show last night . The team took a break to go fishing. All done tongue in cheek, except when they caught fish the silly pr**ts then threw them back in from a great height, with the cameraman following the flight. Talk about giving us 'proper' anglers a bad name. Is there an email address we can write to to express our concern. I have registered with the BBC forum and attempted to post my concern on the DIYSOS board, so will be interested to see if it appears

  6. I use very fine glass paper and work carefully. If the rest of the rod is on good nick be careful not to sand down the blank. Re-ring and carefully paint on a couple of coats of varnish. All equipment should be available from your local tackle shop. Don't forget hot melt glue for the tip ring. Be careful when removing the old tip ring, as it should be glued on the same way, and only a small bit of heat will be necessary (no blow torches or gas burners. There may be a more modern book on how to do it, mine is 40 years old, but still valid :P:P

  7. I've used it for the last 20 years (not the same spool!!), and have never worried about it. I worry more about my ability to tie the hook and play the fish. I don't measure breaking strain or check the diameter, just load it onto my old Mitchell 300s and lob it out. Change it every few seasons, and strip off a couple of yards after each trip to avoid weakening by the shot. Never lost a fish by the line breaking.

No connection with the company apart for a satisfied customer

  8. There was one a few years back called Secret Lake, which was very good, but unfortunately was only a one-off. I think a cross between Chris Yates and Matt Hayes would go down well. A Jack Hargreaves/Mr Crabtree type program following the progress of some young/inexperienced anglers as they learn (in modern parlance it's called a fly-on-the-wall documentary) might attract a good audience, especially if there was an attainable target to aim for, such as a target weight of fish in a fixed time, or a specimen weight. Perhaps one of the commercial match fisheries could be the venue
