  1. Had a great day yesterday caught 3 mullet! One 2 1/2lb / next at 4 1/2lb & then one just under 6lb! Unfortuately I missed the Kent boys Andy, Dave & Chris who fished through from THursday to Saturday! A bit of miss communication meant that I only caught up with them on the last day when I should them my 5 14oz fish just before it got weighed! I think I won the mullet competition again this year as the kent boys only managed a few small ones! Better luck next time chaps!
  2. Hi Dave I am here! Great fish Matt! Brillant! I had a 6lber the other day but that makes mine look a bit silly! well done! Looking forward to taking you to the cleaners yet again down in the weymouth comp Dave & Andy! Not really i am actually quite scared it was close last time!
  3. Just returned from the Costa Del Sol & caught over 60 mullet in a 7 day trip! Didn't get anything massive but most where averaging 4lb and we had 2 fish at 6.5lbs! Just about mulleted out now! But it wont be long before I will be hitting our english greys again soon!
  4. Went out this week and saw a few mullet about but none were playing ball I am afraid? Alot of thin lips as well! Prehaps with this warmer weather things will get better! Off to spain for some real mullet action again so I will let you all know how I got on! Took at least 60 mullet last time in 5 days! Its just like mullet heaven over there!
  5. Yes thanks for that still looking for somewhere legal for my next trip!!
  6. Sounds great Leon! Look forward to my membership card and web-site info then!
  7. Thanks for the replies! Andy the mullet club form has gone! Also read the report on fishing in Lanzorate and it does seem there is some good sport to be had! Unfortuately looks like the same situation there as it is in Spain 300 euros fine for fishing the marinas for the really prized sized mullet which was very disappointing While I was looking on some over sites for information I found myself on one of them? Check this out its me displayed as Tom From Yeovil? with a mullet I caught in 2002 in Fueoguelia Spain! The picture was stolen from a Jersey mullet site run by a guy called Dave( chippy) who used to be on this forum quite alot! Surely there must be some descent mullet in Lanzorate that people have caught and maybe used instead of mine? Here is the link>http://www.coe-clan.demon.co.uk/pfl2.htm
  8. OK Leon i'll put that form in then! Thanks for that! There must be some places they go then if they have written articles on it. Any idea where they went?
  9. Whats the rules in Lanzarote about fishing the harbours stumbled on this question qiven to matt haynes maybe thats the place to go? Certainly be nice and hot this time of year! Hi Matt, I'm travelling to Lanzarote in three weeks time and plan to get in some mullet fishing in the harbours. I intend taking a Shimano 11ft travel rod (50g - 100g) with me and using a small baitrunner with 8-10lb line, but am concerned that my approach may be too heavy. What do you think? Cheers Steven I have never fished the harbour at Lanzarote but I would have thought that the kit is too heavy for mullet. Usually, to fish in the harbour, you need light line and a float set-up with small hooks. However, maybe you can improvise with your kit and do some legering for larger fish. Matt Hayes
  10. Hmm Thats a shame Leon I thought the mullet club might have some keen members keen to catch mullet? I was going to get a membership for Christmas this year but doesn't seem a lot of point then? Hmm probably won't bother then. Thanks for the advise on fishing in those other places but as stressed before the marinas do seem to hold the bulk of the fish and also the biggest specimens! Fishing from the coast is ok but with wave action currents, seaweed and often side winds to contend with makes it pretty awkard. The ebro does contain alot of mullet but they are mostly all thins and usually very small about the 1-2lb mark. I did see John Wilson fishing for them on the ebro and the ones he caught on the fly were tiny. I know there is always Alderney at this time of year but I just want the weather as well?
  11. Do you know if the marinas are fishable? All I need is a place to go abroad while the mullet fishing is great and there are no restrictions on fishing? There must be places where this is possible? Leon do you know anyone in the mullet club who goes abroad and knows where it is all totally legal and above board thats all I really want? Hope to do again for another week before the mullet in this country return in the spring you see!
  12. So if mainland spain is not permitted in the marinas what about some of the spainish islands? Do the laws differ on these? Its just a friend of mine just came back from majaorca and said the marinas where alive with mullet and he fished all week without a problem and also no signs saying no fishing? If spain is no good where else could you go to beat the winter mullet blues is Portugual any good and more importantly can you fish the marinas there? Anyone know of any other spots?
  13. As I said before we did do a bit of a wreckie of the place before we fished and spoke to people who fish the marina all the time before we even attempted to fish just to know the score. I think it does depend on what region you are as to how they are about fishing. Where we were they really didn't seem that concerned but I know further down the coast they are alot more serious about it. This is why I picked this spot because I know we wouldn't much trouble because I had fished there before with no problems! Alan the old man is always getting moved on (usually once every 4-8 weeks) but still fishes it with no problems. Things may change in the future but for now it seems fine and as long as youu don't argue with officials there doesn't seem to be a problem with it. You did say yourself that different regions have different rules prehaps here it is different to where you are? Or they just aren't so worried about it in this particular port? All I know is I'll be back next year! and even if it costs me 300 euros in fines it will be money well spent in my opinion!
  14. Saw the Guardia on a big boat went straight passed us didn't bat an eyelid. Anyway I thought you said you fish the marinas where you are in Spain Dave? Don't you think thats a bit hypocritical if your not supposed to fish in them you are surely still breaking the law? Am sure there are alot worse crimes that Brits get up to on Holiday than just fishing in a marina?
  15. It did seem a very complicated for you to obtain a sea license over their and in our country it is very easy and stariaght forward. If it was just a case of waliking into a tackle shop or going to the post office we would have done it. But unfortuately the spanish have made it very complicated and especially difficult if you do not speak the language. I don't think they are that concerned about the sea license as the old fella had never been asked to produce it in 20 years! If we had fished any fresh water lakes or rivers we would definately have got one!
  16. We did have every intension of getting a license but when we approached the old fella on the first day he seemed to think that it wasn't really worth it for the short term we where there for. In answer to your question if they are just catch & releasing like we were and it was in the sea I wouldn't have a problem with that. However if they were taking on 20lb carp for supper like the Polish are at the moment now that would be different! We were only there 5 days if we go out on more frequent trips and become residents I would definately invest in one. However having a licence for the marina wouldn't have made any difference and that was really were we wanted to be. When the officer moved us on he didn't ask to see anything!
  17. Didn't bother getting a license in the end! The old boy we met had one but he said they never ask you for it and that we were unlucky to be moved on as he hadn't been moved for about 7-8 weeks! The place we were fishing there must of been about 6 of us mostly spanish and we all got moved on including the old boy with the license! He always goes back there after a couple of days and all the police do is move him on when they see him. However some Police do & some don't bother just depends on which ones and whether they can be bothered or not. On the day that rain was coming down a police car drove striaght passed us looked at us but didn't say a word! At the moment they don't seem that hot on it but the old boy said if you get caught up at the lakes he fishes it is a different story! and your gear would probably be taken!
  18. Just got back from my 5 days on the Costa Del Sol! Got there on the Sunday and fished the first day about 3.00pm. The weather was sunny and in the 70,s we fished in the marina at "fueogoliana " (sorry spelling is probably wrong there) and we took 6 mullet in a couple of hours up to 3 1/2 pound. The fishing boats would come in and dump lots of dead fish over the side & the mullet would be just going crazy in really large numbers. Just got them going with a bit of surface bread and we were away! Second day we had 23 mullet in the marina again mostly around the 3-4lb mark! Even though I did lose a really good fish! Third day we did get booted off by the local Police and just moved to another area further around the marina which wasn't as good but produced about 10 mullet all around the 1-2 lb mark! Later on we moved around the other side and got the mullet feeding on the surface with dog biscuits which were cheap and had a slight fishy smell to them. We fished bread over the top of the buscuits and took a further 18 mullet up to the 4lb mark again! I must say the evenings were more productive and the mullet become more active when the fishing boats appeared. The sight on the surface was totally unbeliveable at times with fish coming from all angles hitting the bread with such force it was incredible! Fourth day it rained all day, we still fished and took about 12 fish but it wasn't as good we fished on after dark witha a star light and caught many fish after dark! which was something I had never experienced. Must of bagged nearly as many mullet in 5 days as I have all season in England and I have to say the weather apart from one day was amazing for this time of year. We were lucky that we had an old boy out there who had moved from England to Spain some 20 years ago who seemed to know all about the police and were to fish in the marina which really helped. Now I am back here again I just can't seem to get warm and I feel well and truely mulleted out! I reckon thats it for the season for me now but what a crackin way to end it!
  19. hhmm I have been thinking of trying briad for quite a while, but have been scared about using it due to its lack of stretch and the chances of hook pulls being massively increased. However I think it would be worth a try try to its massive abrasive resistant qualities you could probably let the fish run a bit further without the risk of getting snapped off on an obstruction such as a pontoon. Would you be able to see that sort of briad all the way through? Or would you need a hooklength. Leon I think you are right I need to change the hooklength more often and I think shotting the hooklength weakness the line too and has led to the problem I have had. I don't think its my knots as the hooklength seems to give in the middle of the trace?
  20. Hi am usually on the sea forum as I am a mullet fanatic but was pondering a question that people on the freshwater side my be able to answer for me? Its just that I have had a terrible year on getting big mullet in (ie 6lb + fish). Now where I fish there isn't much room to play fish. Basically if they make it to the pontoons which is about 30 yards they are gone! (ie rub on the structure) so I have to bully them and not let them run too much. Now bites normally seem to dry up if I use anything above 1.8mm line thickness so the only stuff I have found is TEKLON GOLD which is supposed to be 8lb. I use a thicker 8lb main line but use a short hooklength of the TEKLON. Unfortuately I have been smashed up on this line more times this year than any other and was wondering what the best line would be to use bearing in mind a 6lb + mullet is like a barbel on steriods!! There is no way I have applied 8lb of pressure to these fish and yet it seems to break like cotton! Whats the strongest thinnest line on the market that you can recommend?
  21. Might get that license when we get there then Dave just in case thanks for that! Hopefully we won't spend the rest of the holiday banged up in some Spainish prison! Matt ,I reckon that would be good why not come down with Andy & Dave next year as it is fastly becoming an annual event, and they could definately do with some new talent as we rather took them to the cleaners in the mullet comp this year! Not even bringing Phil in could rescue them! It was a total walk over in the end! How about a Spanish/Portugual trip as well? Might beat the winter mullet blues? Thats if my wife lets me go again early next year?
  22. OFF TO SPAIN IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO FISH FOR THOSE GREY GHOSTS! I HAVE BEEN TOLD YOU DON'T NEED A FISHING LICENSE IN THE WINTER ONLY IN THE SUMMER? BUT ALSO IF YOU DO PURCHASE A LICENSE YOU ARE COVERED FROM THE TIME YOU HAVE PURCHASED IT, EVEN IF YOU MAY NOT ACTUALLY HAVE IT UNTIL THE END OF THE HOLIDAY.
  23. STILL A FEW BIG FISH HANGING AROUND DOWN YEAR! HAD TWO BIG FISH SNAP ME UP.JUST NOT SURE IF THEY WERE DEFINATELY MULLET OR BIGGER BASS? SOMETIMES THE FISH IS ON FOR ABOUT 5 MINS THERE IS A HEAD SHAKE AND THE LINE SNAPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOOKLINK. I RECKON SOME OF THEM ARE BIGGER BASS AND ARE CATCHING THERE GILL COVERS ON THE LINE? CAUGHT MY LAST FEW MULLET ON MAGGOTS AS TEMP DROPS THEY DO TEND TO FEED MORE EASILY ON MAGGOTS THEN THEY DO ON BREAD. DEFINATELY WORTH A TRY ANDY B IN YOUR AREA. EVEN THOUGH YOU USE A SIZE 16 & 14 THE HOOKHOLDS SEEM JUST AS GOOD AND YOU CAN FISH MUCH MORE DELICATELY WITH THE MAGGOT PRESENTATION. HOOKUPS ARE ALSO MUCH MUCH EASIER ON MAGGOTS THAN ON BREAD! (SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS LOCK MY BUTTON IS STUCK!)
  24. Oh dear! fished fueloguila marina in 2000 no problem and have booked a holiday to fish there for 5 days! I am hoping that out of season they won't worry so much? Hopefully they will caution us first?Maybe not such a good idea then?
