  1. Thanks for that. I did also thing of spraying WD40 on them but was worried about it making the line float to much when waggler fishing. I suppose you would also have the same problem with the fly fishermans product?
  2. Seems you can cast your leads further than the eye can see. Why has nobody in this country tried this interesting concept? Have a look at this link and tell me waht you think? http://www.fishingkites.co.nz/htmfiles/fishingkiteb.htm
  3. Hi everyone! Braved a bit of carp fishing yesterday on my local pond. The water was real low and I could see the carp moving around. Hooked into a small carp almost striaght away! But had problems with my rod rings freezing into clumps of ice as the conditions worsened. It was really frustating because the fish were taking off the top and going mad just before dark but I couldn't get a descent cast in to were the fish were feeding due to the rod totally locking up on the rings. Has anyone else experienced this and any suggestions what to do under these conditions?
  4. Really seem to have gone off here? Haven't had a fish in about 5 visits now. The water is very dirty at the moment with some big spring tides don't know if that has anything to do with anything?

  6. I have just seen the record mullet in a shop keepers window in Dorchester. He claims it is the real thing as all the fins including tail seem to be orginal. He had just bought it from a pub that was closing down in the town. He has it in a large cabinet with the weight and place of capture. Is it possible that he has the orginal or is it just a replicar of it? He is a keen mullet angler himself and goes to Alderney all the time and therefore did not want to sell it. Not that my wife would have been very impressed if I had brought that one home.
  7. Hi Toerag I am not that far from Christchurch and would be interested in knowing some descent spots there if you had the time to show me?
  8. Nice one Dale. How did they fight? Like nothing you have ever caught before I would expect?
  9. full time mullet fisherman now Dave! Didn't you know!
  10. Just a small one for me again today. About 2/1/2lb! Lots of large fish about just couldn't get them to take my bait.
  11. Another 2 fish one 3/1/2lb and 2 1/2lb. No sign of the monster though? However I was fishing it on a tide that he rarely shows! Phil when are you coming down? Times running out!
  12. Definately works! I'll give you that Dave!
  13. Took another two fish since last message one about 2 1/2 lb the other 4lb. The monster is still there though and I almost tempted it on the surface again! I am going to try my 12 feet carp rod on the beast. At least you can have more faith that it is going to hold it! The fish is still feeding well and seems to come on just as the tide is dropping. I have seen kids feeding it with bread like a tamed animal at times as well! Also I did catch the 4lb fish in a rain storm which dispelled my myth that mullet go off the feed in the rain.
  14. Went out yesterday for the first time for ages due to weather conditions. Hooked up yet another fish but yet again couldn't hold it and it escaped past the pontoons and breaked off under some boats some 50 yards out. I think my abu enticer 10ft rod just isn't up to the job when it comes to bigger fish. I thing I need some more power to take the runs out of the fish. I am using 8lb Tri line with 8lb vantage fluo which surely should be enough. This is the third big fish I've lost and feeling a bit despondant. Any idea what rod and tackle would be good to try and hold these bigger fish. I have seen a 12ft soft barbel rod at my local tackle shop which mean't be better? Any thoughts? Maybe I'll just borrow that boat rod you use for mullet Dave!
  15. Normal black flies sometimes work when the mullet are feeding on them at certain times of the year. But like Leon says mullet will not be fooled by a white fly that doesn't have that unique scent and texture of bread. In Spain the mullet are less timid and you can sometimes get away with a little more. But I do know people such as Andy B who have tried the artifical bread in Spain with little success!
  16. All I would say about that Snatcher is that the mullet always seem to mouth the bait first and if it isn't real they normally reject it striaght away. I have seen it many times in the harbour when white feathers and small white objects are attacked by the mullet but left well alone once realising what it is. Your only hope I think is to try and tie some white bread to a hook. A bit brutual I know but would be your only real chance of success and it will still be hard even then!
  17. I suggest you keep to using the bread method for the better fighting bigger thick lipped mullet that are probably mouthing your bait! It sounds as though you are getting enough bites and are just not striking hard enough or at the right time. You really have to make sure you mend your line so you are always totally on that float and hit the fish immediately that float shoots down. In my experience wide gap hooks seem to give you a better chance of hook ups!
  18. John that technique will usually only work when you are targeting the thin lips.
  19. Thanks for that Leon and Andrew I must admit the first time I hooked that fish it took my hook so hopefully if I do finally get it in it will have that other T6 raptor still in its chops for identifiaction purposes! Had a couple of people mail me back about fishing down here at Weymouth. Might have to become a mullet scout and start the first Mullet fishing holidays down here on the English Riveria! Now that would be a cool job!
  20. Had some cracking sport down here in the last few days! I've had two more fish about 3 1/2lb and you will never believed it Andy but I hooked that big one again! Took a big bit of bread off top in the same place and after another good scrap the hook pulled out after about 5 mins! He just seems unstopable in that small bay area. I mean it can't be any more than a small river width and he disappears under those pontoons in seconds. I wonder if a light barbel rod might be better on those bigger fish over 7lb. Maybe my 10 ft match just hasn't got enough beef for the bigger fish? How much memory do you think mullet have? as it was hooked on Saturday and I rehooked it on the Wednesday? I am hoping its going to be 3rd time lucky but he wasn't there last night and I wonder how long it will be before he starts feeding confidently again? Anyone rehooked the same mullet before in a short period of time? Mick has also caught some nice fish this week 5lb 6oz and 4lb 12oz plus three mullet in a fishing comp on Sunday. May the hot weather continue!
  21. I want a rematch. Next weekend any good?
  22. Yes but what if I had got those 2 in that I lost Dave? Slightly different matter then me thinks. Ah well just have to be the one that got away I guess! And 3-2 is hardly a thrashing anyway!
  23. Quick run down on the weekend here at the mullet Mecca Weymouth! Andy and Dave arrived to meet me on the Friday at 10.00am to a brilliant sunny day. Mullet were already moving all around the harbour and the lads had already had a few mullet mouthing the baits. Andy had already hooked a bass of about 1lb and we moved swiftly to the other side of the harbour to try for a few quality mullet that were moving near the water gates. Dave hooked up a beauty almost straight away and I reckon it was one the bigger fish and was about 6-7lb. Unfortunately it got off with Dave giving it a bit of a wellie to stop it going under the pontoons. On my advise I told him to switch from the standard raptor hook to a raptor t6 with the wider gap and shorter shank which had enabled me to hook a fish of 5lb 11oz just a day before. Dave switched and we continued fishing. We moved to a few different areas before finally settling on an area which seem to be producing allot of feeding activity from the bread we were throwing in. I think Dave hooked into the first fish, which was just a small golden mullet about 1/1/2. He then hooked another fish about 3lb and finally hooked a beauty, which weighed 4lb 13oz. I also took two fish both around the 3 1/2lb mark. So 5 mullet and a bass on the first day were a bit of a result and we looked forward to another great day the next day. We fished on the other side the next day and I noticed the biggest mullet I have ever seen feeding on the surface. I had seen the same fish the previous day and had witnessed it taking whole slices of bread off the top. I had it take my surface bait the day before but had missed the strike. Andy and I were fishing the same spot and the fished had appeared to have disappeared for about an hour. All of sudden, whilst Andy WAS talking to a holiday maker his rod was almost taken out of his hands by a mullet that was not of normal size. Unfortauely Andy missed the take but not 20secs later the big monster came through from the pontoons and grapped my hook bait and I hooked straight into it. "Ive hooked the big one" I shouted to Andy. It really didn't seemed to realise it was hooked at first and was just flapping on the surface and allowed me to bring it right into the shore. Unfortunately the net we had didn't reach the water and Andy did the 200m dash to get a longer net from Dave who was fishing down the other side of the harbour. The fish then suddenly woke up and was like a steam train crashing out to the pontoons in seconds and trying to jam me into weed. I dragged it in with weed hanging all around it tried to take my drag up a bit and got snapped off on the third run. We reckon the fish was 8lb minimum and I have Andy as my witness. Totally gutted I fished on but really wasn’t in the mood after that. It was a bit of a bad day in comparison to the first and after losing yet another fish decided to call it quits with no one else having any more luck. Thanks for a great weekend lads and the curry was much appreciated! Hopefully you will back for some more action soon. Also anyone else who wants to come down and give it a go down here just drop me a mail.
  24. Went out yesterday and actually managed to hook what looked like a really good fish pulled out after about 10 mins. My good mate Mick Channon also lost a good fish just before mine but luckily managed to redeem himself by neting a 4lb 4oz fish later in the session! Looking forward to meeting you Dave and Andrew next weekend. Lets pray for some good weather!
  25. Another blank yesterday is making me think I've lost my touch. Fished with a holidaymaker yesterday who had a telescopic rod and reel and hooked a 3 1/2 lber. Just to make me feel even better! This one took maggots and he was using only a size 14 hook to nylon called (mustang carp feeder I believe). First time he had hooked a mullet and was very impressed with the way the fish went!
