I was more concerned about getting it back in the water.
Good for you. I wish more people had the same attitude. This is one of the reasons why I don't weigh fish anymore.

Its when you're on the dge of your seat all day because everythings so right and you must get something, and the realization only dawning on you as it gets dark and its time to go home that you've blanked!
That's petty much how it was. I didn't even have the buzzer switched on for most of the day because I was watching the line in anticipation.
Yogi is right about getting the most out of a trip regardless of how many fish are caught. A bit less rain would have been nice though.

It's not the blanking per se that's got me thinking, it's the fact that it was a blank when everything felt so right. I'm pleased to say that blanking doesn'thappen to me very often these days, unless I'm trying a new water or tactic. Having said that, I don't fish hard waters for big fish anymore.

I managed to get half a day piking on my local stretch of River Leam yesterday. Like everywhere else, the river is in a terrible state, but I had a trick up my sleave, there's a small boat club marina that I convinced myself would be full of fish sheltering from the main flow. I went along and tossed a sardine into likely looking spots for 45 min or so before moving on.
Not a touch! A blank isn't that big a deal, but I've been doing very well lately and was convinced that I'd get run after run. I'm not often wrong about these things, but was this time. In retrospect, the river has been calming down a little in the last few days, so maybe the fish had ventured out already.
Any thoughts or just one of those days?

My personal best is 21.5 lb from Kingsmead on a paternostered sprat. It was taken from a swim right next to the car park along with two smaller doubles. It was particularly satisfying because all the self-proclaimed experts were struggling at the time. Bizarrely, I caught the same fish the next day in the very same spot with the same tactics.
Since then, I may have beaten it with a very nice fish caught on a small spinner on the Itchen while it was in flood, but since I don't weigh fish anymore, I can't say for sure.

See this thread, similar experiences!

I've had some good days on lures recently when the water has been running clear, but I'd forget it with river conditions as they are at the moment.
Over the years, I've come to the conclusion that lures simply aren't as good as the real deal. Shame, lure fishing is a great way to fish, we just need some more exciting fish in this country .

I've learnt the hard way not too bother when it's like this. No doubt some will disagree, but I just don't think it's worth the effort. Having said that, there's a mini-marina on my local stretch that I bet is stuffed full of pike right now. If things sort themselves out a little between now and Sunday I might just be tempted to toss a sardine in.

Water was slow paced and very clear on my local stretch. Perfect for a bit of spinning, but couldn't get the afternoon off work . Now it's 'orrible.

Well, as far as I can see there are some very compelling reasons to stop people transporting fish from one country to another illegally.

Smuggling, yes, but cheating too. Williams claims an impressive list of trophy pike. We can now wonder just how many were caught without resorting to some form of cheating.
If the guy's integrity is in question, then you could wonder about other claims. In particular, the weights of his trophy fish.
As an aside, I think it's interesting that such an experienced piker went to so much effort and risk to fish livebaits which if the popular angling press is to be believed, is a bit outdated for big pike hunting.

I bet they are great fun Sipadan.Just wouldnt cast the baits and rigs I use though.
I don't know what you cast, but I'm sure you're right. The biggest baits I use are 3 - 4 oz and I only cast short distances on rivers. Blasting big baits out over the horizon isn't my idea of fun anymore, but each to their own of course

I use the £15 argos ones, they are light waterproof and I usually get 3 or 4 seasons out of them before replacement, which is great value for £15

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but the can the centre pole be removed from this masterpiece of fishing tackle?

I'll be branded a heretic, but I use the 10 ft, 4 piece version of this for ALL my pike fishing:

It's a real fishing rod rather than a casting machine and a pleasure to use.

What kind of fish was that in the video? Looked a bit grayling-like, but there wasn't a clear view and presumably it had some teeth

Supply and demand. As Waveney One says vote with your feet or more to the point your wallet. Ain't capitalism great

i thought it was OK, at least more watchable than most of the crap that ends up on TV (endless game shows, reality TV, soaps etc).

After losing a long fished-for carp on a cheap hook that straightened when I was a teenager, I always use reputable brands. I stick with Drennan for most of my fishing and Owner for pike fishing. I also stick to eyed hooks, but I'm no matchman. Don't think the fact that the hook was barbless had anything to do with it.

think i'm about to give up with my wavelock brolly, it's tough to the point of being armour plated, but i'm sick of lugging the damn thing around. any cheap and light alternatives come to mind?

Aged 5, small perch from the River Thames at Windsor.

i was thinking about this last night on one of my rare coarse fishing trips. i use a 15 year old shakespeare extended splice [tip] match rod. i got it as a present for doing well in my gcse exams, funny, never thought i'd turn into one of those "old" men who use ancient tackle. anyway, i'm even rambling like an old man now, the rod does the job nicely with stick or waggler and believe it or not, is great for near shelf fishing with a micro feeder or bomb.
-
fireline is strange stuff, it's very stiff, so doesn't tangle very often, though when it does, it's almost impossible to sort out as you say. i use it with a match rod that has a fibreglass tip which is soft, it seems to be a good combination.

Personally, I'd forget mono for trotting, fireline all the way for me

I wouldn't have much confidence fishing squid for pike, but is does make you wonder. Will pike take any shape/colour bait that smells of fish? What next, fishmeal boiles? I could see it happening, big boiles hair rigged on a wire trace.
Personally, I love eating squid and octopus, mmm
