  1. I've used "Drennan Fluoro Fly Leader" in 8lb b/s for quite some time now for barbel hooklengths, and am quite happy with it. I've had Barbel to 11.3 on it and can't remember any breakages.

Some people (experienced anglers included) seem to struggle with fluoro and some don't. I think it must just depend on how you tie hooks/play fish, sometimes some stuff works for one angler and not another.

One tip I can give with the Drennan stuff is that when you've tied a hooklength with it, it will look quite curly, just gently stretch it and it will straighten out completely.

Thanks for the replies guys, ayjay what length of fluoro do you use for barbel, i ask because i was led to believe the longer you used the more chance of tangles?, is this correct?, thanks again. :)

  2. Hi all, does anyone use fluorocarbon for their hooklengths for carp/barbel bream tench etc and do you rate it above other hooklink materials?, can you use the stuff that is used for fly fishing leaders and lastly if you had to use it for the 4 species mentioned is there one particular length of hooklink you would use that would cover all these fish?, sorry for all the questions just wondering if its a better bet than your usual braids, monos etc, thanks in advance. :)

  3. Sorry for the delay, the braid is by shakespeare in 20 pound strain,i threw the empty spool in the bin so i don,t know the exact name. The reel is a daiwa emblem.Like i said it only seemed to fill up on the bottom of the spool and i had to wind it on by hand so it was evenly distrubuted?, i take it by the replies that this sort of thing is fairly uncommon with braid?

  4. Hi all, for the second time i have tried to put braid on my lure fishing reel and for the second time its went wrong?. When i was trying to wind it onto the reel it was winding on to the bottom of the spool in a big clump so i had to put it on by hand so it was evenly distributed?. Then first cast came the mother of all birdsnests?. After cutting the braid and tying up again the exact same thing happened after 3 casts so i gave up and went back to mono?, what am i doing wrong?,this happened last time as well?

  5. Cheers guys had a look through the old posts, very interesting?. Basically i just need a basic finder that tells me what depth is in front of me and any features, drop offs humps etc without using a rod and lead?. I seen one on an american site i think it was an rf30 newt?,it was the one with the wristwatch display?,do you think they are any good?,thanks in advance. :)

  6. As an aside from the usual stuff and as i am a big fan of autobiographys i was wondering if maybe there was a market for some of the more high profile anglers to jot down their memoirs and unleash them on the angling public?, who would you like to read about if anyone, there adventures in fishing etc, what other kind of stuff would you like it to include or maybe theres no none interesting enough in angling to make you part with your hard earned cash? :)

  8. Ouch!! its a bit off though that Christmas day had to coincide with near perfect winter fishing weather, but looks OK for the next few days.

BTW Did you ever make the Severn barbel trip last July? Or did the floods spoil it.

Sadly i didn,t make it rabbit, my fishing partner let me down and i didn,t fancy doing it on my own,it is still a wish of mine ,hopefully next year.. :)

  9. If i even suggested it i would have my scrotum removed with the trifle spoon  , i can see why it would be attractive to some though,a stress free xmas doing something you love and not the queen or a motherinlaw in sight..bliss :D

  10. Just checked my favourites list and the only sites I visit or use the forums regularly on are (in aproximate order) -

Anglers Net Allready given my reasons.

PAC Forum Excellent Pike forum and a lot of my mates are members.

Fishing Magic (dont go there so much now but used to write an awfull lot of articles for

Graham in the early days) tend to agree with Peters comments.

Uncut Fishing A good all round "local" site that my brother administers.Growing fast.

LPAA web site. A good all round "local" site that my brother administers.Starting to struggle.

I think Eltons comments on what makes a good website are correct as well.Ive met people/attended fish ins from all the above sites to.

Also the coments re Pike and Predaters are also right.I just stopped going on there as it seemed to be a pretty miserable place! anyone who was "known" was either automaticly slagged or had their backsides licked! Small group of guys who had "elected" themselves to "moderater" positions and didnt like anyone posting anything that they didnt agree with! Stuff em! Even the proper mods didnt seem to be able to curb them.

I think this forum is by far the best, its a kind of little house on the prairie to pike and predators judas priest?. Lots of friendly people who aren,t shy when it comes to sharing their knowledge. P and P was good a long time ago but as you say the moderators couldn,t give a monkeys nowadays so its full of keyboard hardmen and bumlickers :P I also like fishing magic.. :D

  11. To be honest, I think where the lochs are concerned there is maybe less danger from the people that fish of the backs of others, than with smaller waters, like for example the hampsire avon, when that contained the pike which is in the domesday book of mammoth pike, it was hammered, just for that one fish. On the other hand, if a loch like loch lomond was shown to hold massive pike, then yes, it might get some fish chasers swanning about on its surface, but on the whole, i think alot of general anglers would be less likely to go chase the fish due to its sheer size. Also a pike would be far safer in Lomond than in a small reservoir, in terms of recapture possibilty.

But, saying that I can see why some may be less than willing to divulge information on there sacred waters on the internet.

Happy mondays; dont neccesaily take the lack of response of people on this issue as an indicator of general angling attitude, its just where the internet is involved, people have learned to keep quiet, i mean the audience is massive here, and as such people are twitchy with regards to what they say, or more accurately, publicise. Its so much different to general tackleshop, or pub chit chat.

I hear Loch mcmurky up in tattiesconeness is producing a few biggies? :D

  12. Be prepared for early starts. The best swims will go *very* early, especially at weekends and if you're not on them the fishing is not as good in my experience.

    Thanks Jim, much appreciated.

  13. I would just like to praise the customer service staff at Daiwa UK. I dropped in with a broken emblem Baitrunner on Monday as i had a day off. The lady was very pleasant and said they would phone me as soon as they could look at it. Thinking it would be a while i forgot about it until the my mobile rang yesterday to tell me that it was fixed and ready to pick up free of charge, upon explaining that it would be at least next week before i could get back in to pick it up the lady in question took my address and posted it out again free of charge!.The reel arrived today, just 3 days later. I offered to pay the postage but she wasn,t having it. Bearing in mind that the model is at least 4 years old and has since been discontinued i think that was excellent, it makes a nice change from moaning about bad service?

  14. Severn, Do you think you'd be able to reckognise him from the avatar photo ?

I will take my make up off and leave the wives and 3 legged dog at home :D . Sorry for the delay in replying had trouble posting for some reason. Thanks for the replys, just need to get a concrete date sorted out which i think will be the 2nd week in Sept, hope its still fishing well at that time. As far as accomodation goes a room above a nice pub would be good for a wash and a bite to eat and a couple of pints. We will be fishing from the Friday till sunday lunchtime before heading home, i will post nearer the time, thanks for the help so far.

  15. Hi everyone, i am planning a trip down to the severn for barbel in the next few weeks and was wondering if anyone could help me?. I have the necessary gear required having fished for carp bream and tench up here in scotland for many years, i just need a general point in the right direction?. I am hoping to fish around the bridgenorth area so any info regarding daytickets and possible accomodation for a couple of nights would be great. Can you fish through the night?, i have never caught a barbel and i am very excited at the prospect, any help will be gratefully received, thanks!

  16. Hi, i have managed to break 2 of my baitrunners in the past few weeks (well a cow did one but thats another story) they were daiwa 50/50 brt ones and as i have emailed the company 5 times with no reply i have decided to get a couple of new reels. I seen the cormoran ones on ebay and was wondering if anyone has used them and are they any good?. It appears that they are a german company who are in partnership with daiwa. If not can anyone reccomend a decent quality mid price baitrunner as the ones i,m replacing are no longer in production, thanks in advance.

  17. Hi all, does anyone know the address of fox UK as i have a micron buzzer thats playing up and would like to get it looked at?, any info gratefully receved, thanks.

  18. Hmm but Hayes and Brown come across as genuine guys - you could imagine a glass or two and a friendly chat. Wilson talks to his ghillies like crap and comes across as a miserable old goat...I think that manic laugh is a bit fake...

I don,t mind him as any fishing on the box is better than none, however i also have noticed that he is a bit blunt and disrespectful( probably unintentionally) of some of the local guides/helpers on his trips to the gambia etc..
