  1. I will not be trying for roach , perch, tench etc up here until mid - May as this is always slow to start. Loch Chon could be a good one for you to try for the pike. I havent been up there but I have heard good reports.

The course fishery at Magiscroft might be ok if the weather is mild (Cumbernuauld).

If you ask again nearer the time I will try to get you better info

  2. And a damn fine rant it was too ! ;) You're dead right.

I would be appalled at the behaviour or the angler if I thought for one minute he did it on purpose. Unfortunately we all lose tackle from time to time and are aware of the potential risk.

Dog owners can be just as lax at times. They seem to enjoy watching the dog swim in your swim while they say "come out you naughty dog !!" And dont talk to me about excrement !! - at our canal I need to kick about 6 turds in the canal off my bit of bank before I can get started !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And another thing , what does the "off the lead dog" do when it sees the swans or ducks !!!!!!!! Cause for complaint by the RSPB at times !!!!!!!!

Some of these people need to live and let live before they criticise others !!

Tight lines and a happy NY to to all

  3. How could a shore angler benefit? By trotting a suspended jelly along the banks, simple really!

Apparently a number of bass fishermen up here use a rubber eel under a carp controller or a bubble float. I havent tried it. I can however see some possibilities for pike using a similar set up with a lure. Not at short range though. Many trout fishermen used to use wet flies under a bubble float before it was outlawed. It would deffinitely work for pollack.

Pike pollack bass trout !!!!!!!!!!!!! Dont see why a technigue that works for one would fail for others !!

Then again I dont think I would be the one to try it first

Tight lines and a happy New Year to you all

  4. I would agree with much of what has been said esp Kens comments. I have been on this site for 18 months and have had the following trips : amble -3 days, weymouth 5-days, Lymington 2 days, stonehaven 1 day, Dundee 1 day, Dumfries and Galloway 1 day, lochaline 4 days.

All good quality fishing with smashing people.

I have been in 2 clubs which folded and one in which the members behavior was poor : throwing all their litter into the sea for example.

I have now joined a club with exhaulted members who post on here such as Kenny C, Spurhound, Arthurcodsbody, Sultzer.

Most of us on AN fish because we love it, want to experience new things and appreciate quality in our hobby. This is not always the case with fishing clubs who often demand cheap , local and convenient fishing.

I also look at the WSF sea fishing site and get marvelous local reports from guys who obviously love their fishing also.

The old fashioned club where the committee always get the "back of the boat" is now "off the pace" and a more enlightened type of angler is now looking for similarly minded people. I , for example , feel an affinity with people I have never met but will do sometime through this and other internet sites.

  5. That was some day Snatcher.

Sometimes you only need one thing to go wrong like the day I set off (and arrived an hour later) without my rod carrier.

    Or

The day a swan towed the guy next to myselfs rod and reel out to the middle of the Loch and then flew off.

You can do some things but you cannae fish without a rod !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Or

The day we arrived at the fishing grounds by boat to find the bait was still in the boot !!!!!!

  6. I had a leeda reel that developed a problem. I managed to get a contact phone no. and called them. They refused to let me send them back the reel saying I had to return it through the location I bought it from. The Location was Mularkeys so I posted it to them and asked them to send it on to Leeda. I never heard from either of them again and couldnt be bothered with the hassle of chasing it up.

Moral of the stoy as far as I am concened is simply dont buy from leeda you are compomising on quality and service.

Ps The exact opposite of the leeda example is shakespeare if you have a problem with an item send it back to them and they will resolve it without a quibble !!

  7. Hi David how are you doing ??

I do a bit of course fishing from time to time, I can tell you about :

Magiscroft - Cumbernauld - match sized carp ,ide etc

Forth And Clyde Canal - tench and pike

Eglinton Park - Irvine - Bream And roach

Loch Ken Dumfries- bream, perch and pike

If we can get a flounder bashing trip organised ,possibly with Matt And Jason we can have a blether about it.

  8. Hi Andrew the very best of luck to you , at least you have thought it through and taken advice. Let us know how you go.

I would really like to know some places to try as the pier at Cairnryan is the only place I know down near you.

I am going to try the Cree estuary at Creetown sometime soon , Let me know if you fancy it.

  9. I used to tie flies when I was young. Mainly dries or wets for brownies. There is nothing as rewarding as catching on your own flies. I have to confess my creations were at times a bit untidy (unlike Snatchers works of art). However the fish still took them esp when there was a bit of colour in the water. I used some flies Snatcher sent me recently. They had all the qualities I like in a fly:

    1) Not too overdressed

    2) A nice short but broad hook

    3 ) Bleedin deadly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. I hear what you are saying hairy-boy however if there is a chance of you doing any ledgering ?? the flexibility of the bait-runner is worth thinking about. Remember you have already diversified from fluff chucking !!!

Norm B makes a point worth considering but that I cannot elaborate on as I have used some of my pike reels for pollack fishing for years without a problem. A "dook" in warm water and a sray of wd40 has always kept them ok - Abu cardinal and a Shakespear Potenza.

  11. Mike am so pleased that there may be good news on the horizon. My best wishes go to you and all involved.

Dont know why but I feel I should say something about the arguments. From my perspective I feel we have more in common as anglers and AN members than at first meets the eye.

The guys who post on here are responsible anglers who for example use suitable gear and look after the environment. Not like some of the Neds we all meet from time to time.

If I have a gripe it is with people who are obsessed with a single species eg. cod ,bass or in another forum pike or carp. My attempt to take the mickey would come across much better in the pub than It does on the Net.

Lets think about it folkes Mikes recent post and the loss of Alan should make us lighten up and appreciate our similarities.

There - wish I had stuck with my first instinct and said nothing ,however it is done now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ps canny get the smilies to work !!!!

  12. Fished Loch Ken under bad conditions rising water full

of leaves twigs etc blown off the trees by the heavy wind. When pike fishing I had 3 fish between 6 Lb 1 oz and 7 Lb 15 oz (bloody honest digi scales ;)

When feeder fishing I had a few ruffe the most unusual one being stuck in the cage feeder but not on the hook !!

Just in case any of the pike-police read this I was not fishing for pike and bream at the same time , honest :o

Ps Shaun - I can see the bait but where is the fish ??

  13. Any fixed spool reels I buy in future will be bait-runners. I use these for pike ,carp and bream now. I will also get a big bait runner style reel for when I am shore fishing next year. It saves the risk of a fish pulling the rod in or the annoyance of having to fiddle weith the drag every time you are going to move away from the rod.

Manufacturers are personal preference , I have okuma and diawa spinning reels that have never let me down and dont "break the bank"
