Sounds like heaven to me. Overgrown and awkward keeps the rabble away, £25.00 is an absolute steal whether able bodied, pensioner, disabled whatever.
Our local river club went belly up and things have gone from strength to strength in my opinion. The lillys and bankside vegetation stay put with no 1/4 acre bivvy plots being cleared, I dread the day when a club may decide to take it on again.
Problem on the Severn is that on some stretches it is dangerous to fish as platforms have been washed away leaving unsafe & high banks which are a nightmare in the wet. I'd love to explore these 'pegs that time forgot' but find it very difficult to do so.
I'll keep buying the book & exploring but can see me ringing for help at some point whilst clinging to a bush.

John it is unbelievable that you can buy a club book but not get given the padlock codes!.............................but even more unbelievable if they then put them on a website which anyone can acsess! surely Im mis interpreting your post Mr M?
By the way the Kiddy stretchs are thought by many to be some of the best barbell stretchs on the Severn.
Budgie
To be honest i didn't need a club book as i've fished most of em over the years. i just asked if there were any new updates & got told out of stock & went on my merry way.
Very disappointed given the 100 mile round trip not to be able to get through the gate & no mention of padlocks at HQ or website (that i could see).
I can understand the need for padlocks on some of these venues but discussed it with 4 other members afterwards & they too knew nothing about it.
Simple communication i would have thought.
I'll still buy a card as i always have done but must agree some of the stretches are now bordering on unfishable / unsafe on the Severn.
Shame really

I bought my permit in January so I had no problem... and maybe I am a fool but I bought it online..
A lot of the venues do have locks or funny directions precisely to prevent non - permitholders from blocking up the car parks etc.
don't suppose they want it broadcast but the codes are in the guidebook and the entire guidebook is also online. It's pretty essential to cehck online before you use BAA waters because the water you fish is probably booked out to a club for a match...
I don't thinks its an expensive option at all - you can still buy day tickets from the agents.. Of more concern to me is the ongoing lack of maintenance on the river banks, makes you wonder where the money is spent... who knows maybe its better this year.
Educate me
Guide book not in stock at HQ upon visit
Website contains maps not codes.
How is the padlock code communicated to members ?
-
I can't remember the lasat time I got asked for my BAA (Birmingham Angers Association) card on the bank and with hours to go before the start of the new season, I find this:
http://www.baa.uk.com/html/memberships.htm
How many people are simply going to fish without a licence ?
OK you say, so just buy your card online. Great idea but whist the BAA site allows you to buy a card online, the site appears to be unencrypted and you can almost hear the sharks circling as you enter the page asking for card details.
Oh yes and no more disabled concessions. So my father who has been a member for 40 years but can't climb a style these days has to pay full whack.
and they wonder why river fishing is becomming less popular
Got to say Ken my view is similar.
Bought a card at tail end of river season to fish one specific stretch. Up at 3am, on the road only to find the car park padlocked on arrival. No mention of padlocks, no codes with card to member on payment (at HQ).
Fished elsewhere.
Once very proud club now in decline.
Needs a shake up & some new blood IMO

OK John, I will consider going to the next "on the bank" in the area and I will also be looking at the website again and again but I am not promising of either joining up or not as I do have other fishing club commitment.
No Probs Andrew you are welcome to the next one member or not.
If its the solihull & warks website don't bother its out of date.
Steve will update via www.pacgb.co.uk probably
Regards
John

John when is it your next meeting and where about is it and how much it would cost me to attend?
I still have mixed feelings about the PAC as i was a members for a good ten years but I was disgusted and always be on what the PAC did in the past on their attitudes to my brother that why I dropped out and again I did never did get hold of some of the magazine what was promise to me when they were supoosed to sent to me!
Andrew
Solihull & Warks region usually starts up after a summer break in October. The region has moved away from meetings in a pub / club to 'on the bank' get togethers in the west mids. Not sure what Steve Bown (RO ) has planned for this year but will let you know in due course.
Can't comment about the past Andrew as i simply don't know the facts. The present Committee has a simple message - The past is the past & we need strength in Unity to move forward.
There are many issues facing Pike Angling (and other Predator types of angling). We can attempt to address these or continue 'in fighting' which will achieve nothing.
We might not win every battle but it won't be for lack of effort.
Regards
John Cahill

PS it costs nothing to attend the region meetings except maybe a day ticket
-
It has to be down to personal choice bruv.I will respect your decission the same as you respected mine for all those years.
If it wasnt for the fact that I know you are so busy with your other club positions I would have sugested you started your own region!
Andrew
You are welcome to attend Solihull & Warks Region where i am based. In addition the West Midlands Liaison Officer 'Mad Mick' lives in Redditch & will i am sure be happy to discuss any reservations you may have.
With regard to Privilleged Access events in the West Midlands there is i am afraid a shortage of available trout water Piking on your immediate doorstep. We as a Region do travel / car share all over the country (& Europe) to fish. Prices are in line with those charged on 'open' trout water tickets at circa £50 a boat for a pair of anglers.
Next year 3 of us are off to Canada.

"The PAC is launching a special extended membership offer to celebrate the start of the season."
Does not the PAC advocate not fishing for pike until the autumn, depending on the water/angling pressure. I believe its one of their recommendations, so what's this 'start of the season' bit?
Start of season (June 16th) refers to start of season on those waters not open all year.
PAC position is this (Press release June 12th)
PAC URGES SUMMER PIKERS: LOOK AFTER ESOX
June 12, 2006
With the new river fishing season about to get under way, the Pike Anglers Club is calling for people to fish responsibly for Britain's top predator. "Pike are easily damaged by poor handling at any time but at this time of the year there is an added risk when oxygen levels in the water are low," said PAC chairman Colin Goodge.
"For this reason many of our members choose not to fish for pike in summer but we also recognise there are anglers who do, particularly with lures.
"We would appeal to anyone to think carefully before they go out: Is my tackle strong enough to land a fish quickly, especially in weedy water..? "Do I have the right tools to hand to unhook a pike quickly to minimise the amount of time it spends out of the water..?
"And extra care should exercised when bait fishing, with good bite indication and prompt striking the keys to avoiding deep-hooked fish.
"This is particularly important for those who may choose to pursue other species, such as zander, over the warmer months, on waters which also contain pike."
The PAC is urging all predator anglers to follow its code of conduct, which can be viewed at www.pacgb.co.uk.

Hi,
I have been trying to track down "do it yourself" kits for making Flying C's, but without success to date. I want to be able to customise /repair them.
All help much appreciated. Many thanks, Des Friel.
PS - Flying C's are spinners. The C stands for condom! as the rubber skirt is said to resemble one and the original nickname stuck! I daresay it was curtailed to "C" so as not to offend those more sensitive souls amongst us!
Many thanks for any input

Presumably for challenging the legality of any proposed livebaiting ban in the courts?
" No money is requested until such time that a detailed proposal is put to those who pledge and then only if they individually accept the proposal will payment be requested."
Is this like a direct debit mandate?
No
the fund is simply at the stage where an indication of support is sought.
No monies or authorities to debit monies are requested.
You can always say no if you subsequently don't like what the Representative panel have to say.
Re legal Costs - correct because them boys ain't cheap
Going back to my P&P lair now

I have been asked by a member of the LAS Committee to post the following
LURE ANGLERS SOCIETY NEWSLETTER.
MAY 2005
CONFERENCE 2005
It is with much regret that we are cancelling the June conference, this decision has not been taken lightly, but due to other urgent commitments my time has not been available to ensure this is a highlight of the year. Unless I can ensure it is a total success for both members and trade, I will not settle for second best. We are looking at re-scheduling this event for later in the year and will keep you advised through the magazine, a dedicated mailer and the website.
Gary Palmer, Promotions & Advertising.
A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN.
The committee is working hard to improve the LAS and here are some of the good things, the summer issue of the magazine is already at the printers and we will be sending this out very early in June.
The LAS is in the best financial position it has been in since the society started, under this committee we have built a healthy bank balance and can look to the future with confidence. Some of this money will be used for new computer equipment for the editor, this will help produce a better magazine with easier setting up.
The membership keeps up remarkably well, this is not to say we have enough, we always want more. Lure fishing is a growing sport and we are always surprised we do not have a larger membership particularly of those who are coming into lure angling, the magazine must be the best way of learning. Attending the lure matches is also a great way of learning. In the last year, both the Shimano/LAS Lure Tournament (full report in next magazine) and the Masterline/Harris Zander Lure Match have been a great success producing the best bags and bigger fish than we have ever had, both were well attended.
Normally I would have been glad to have helped Gary organise the conference, but when he realised, due to a combination of work, health and the fact his partner was having a difficult birth with their baby, that he could not put in the work required to make it a good conference, he asked me for help, but due to illness and subsequently a death in the family, I could not give the time required either. Most members of the committee hold down full time jobs, so finding the time to contact the trade to take stands and all the other things that have to be done to provide a good day for our members and visitors, just was not available, therefore it was decided to cancel.
Although it was a tough decision to cancel the conference, it was for good reasons, and now we now working out a new date later in the year.
Roy Goddard, Chairman.
P.S. The other good news is Gary and his partner Laura have a healthy baby girl, Laura is still not fully recovered but we wish her well.

Midland PAC members have only become aware of this incident today and will fully support the sentiments of previous posts.
Re Birmingham Zander culls, Mark is quite correct in that all are killed. A friend of mine witnessed circa 300 carcases rotting in a Warwickshire field a while back.

Re above it was a decent Pike water in the 70's. The Jetty is no longer there & the Pike population is modest. Doubles are rare fish these days.
Regular matches also limit weekend access.
Not what it was i'm afraid
