  1. As always a thoroughly enjoyable weekend despite the unfavourable conditions. It's a weekend we look forward to every year and always have mixed emotions when we get a position as it proves that there is less and less interest from new members joining AN which is a shame. Even my girlfriend Vicky looks forward to this weekend now and didn't complain, too much, when I informed her that we'd be getting up at 5am to make the 70 mile trip to my favourite venue.

As always a massive thank you to the bailiffs (and families) for all their hard work in preparing for the fish-in, Steve Campbell for the refreshments, Peggy for an awesome BBQ as always and lastly, and most importantly, to Steve Burke for allowing us all to descend onto his amazing fishery.

As already mentioned by others the conditions were not great for my favoured tench so hearing that the perch were in a feeding mood I decided to go with the naturals to give me a chance with both species. Swapping between the float, running feeder and helicopter feeder tactics I managed a total of 5 perch. As always I used my usual method feeder/pellet tactics through the night to see if there were any tench around but I just don't think they were in the feeding mood despite seeing a few rolling in the area.

    My perch went:

    2-10 feeder/worm

    2-2 float/worm

    2-6 float/worm

    2-7 feeder/worm

    2-7 feeder/worm

Thanks again to all - a few pics below

  2. Anthony,

I may very well be asking for some advice at some point as I have never caught a wingham tench (or anything besides pike and eels) in 3 trips there over the last 8 years or so via fish-ins. Desperate to change that this year if I get the nod from Steve to attend.

No problem at all buddy. My go to method has been a small method feeder covered in dampened pellet. Hookbaits have varied on each trip from small white pop ups (worked best when water was murked up from strong winds) to fake corn and fake maggots. On the last session they responded better to maggots (small PVA bag attached to a bolt rig consisting of 2.5oz lead and short 5" coated braid hooklink).

The most important thing, as Steve is always keen to mention, Is location. I'm allowed to fish 4 rods and of these I've only been catching on 2 of them consistently. Despite moving the other two rods around I've not been able to find a productive spot. If you've told Steve on your questionaire that you're targeting tench then he will put you in a swim that will hold them but the key is finding the spot. Spend plenty of time plumbing your swim looking for the sides of gravel bars. I've found the most productive areas to be between gravel and silt and best depths to be between 6 - 10 feet. Then it's just a case of feeding little and often until they respond. For loose feed, I tend to feed groundbait with very little food items in it. This way I'm introducing lots of attraction but the food is actually concentrated around my hookbait. Method feeders are great for this (unless there's a strong cross wind then I change to inline leads and small pva sticks).

I hope some of this helps but they'll be a few Wingham regulars around to point you in the right direction so don't be afraid to ask questions.

  3. Just to wet people's appetite, I've been down on my spring ticket and have already been amongst the fish despite the recent cold weather. In 3 weekend sessions I've had 6 perch between 2lb 6oz and 3lb, 32 tench to 8lb 10oz (I've caught 8's on each visit!) and have even managed one of those elusive Wingham bream. The fishing is only going to get better as it warms up before the fish-in so get yourself signed up for the chance of a very memorable weekends fishing.

  4. Massive thanks to all those that put the effort into making the AN Fishin happen again this year. I can promise you that your hard work is hugely appreciated by all.

Wingham is by far and away my favourite lake so I was over the moon to hear that I had got a place again this year. The conditions weren't looking great for this weekend and temps struggled to get into double figures. A total contrast to last year where we had temps of 18 degrees.

I was on Long Island platform again this year which was a massive confidence boost for me as I'd done so well out of the same swim last year. I still had the info on my phone from the last session including the number of wraps etc to the hot spots I'd found. I did notice however that there was some old weed covering most of the spot so the castable weed rake was called into action to both clear the spot and to stir things up a little. Something I have found to get the tench mooching on my spots in the past.

Anyway I won't bore you too much with the fine details so I'll just paste in my notes on my captures for the weekend. You will notice that I had to keep changing things around to keep bites coming:

    Wingham AN Fish-in 2016

    Conditions:

8-10 degrees by day, 3-5 degrees by night. 1020mb dropping to 1005 on Monday. Wind blowing from North West with blue sky and showers.

Right & middle rod - 13 wraps towards right hand point of island(bites came at 12.5)

Left rod 9.3 wraps cast towards right hand edge of tallest group of trees.

    Saturday:

12am- 6lb 7oz male caught on left rod. Method (expo/halibut/black crumb/molasses/CSL/crushed source & tutti boilies) with 2 tutti boilies on hair. Gardener camo hooklink stripped 10mm from hook with gardener small kicker on hook and small silicon tube on bend to turn the point. Size 10 gripz, 6in hooklink.

Fish lost at 2:10am. Reeled rig in to find tangled hooklink so a tench has done me in the weed I think. Source 10mm boilie tipped with corn on 6inch hooklink. Coated braid with 25mm peeled back by hook. Size 10 Gripz.

    Sunday:

10am - 4lb 3oz - left rod - female caught on worm/red maggot. Running open ended feeder filled with worm compost and chopped worm.

7pm - lost fish on right hand rod fished on T-rig and small bag of casters.

8:30pm - 3lb male - middle rod moved to left spot - caught on maggot rig made of Wychwood hooklink with 10mm stripped back and mini swivel tied to hair and piece of zig foam pushed over swivel before tying 10 maggots to swivel.

9:20pm - 7lb 4oz female to left hand rod. Method feeder (expo/halibut/black crumb/molasses/CSL/crushed source & tutti boilies) with 2 tutti boilies on hair. Change of hooklink from previous night. Changed to 5inch sink link with silicone round bend of hook and Wychwood small kicker. Also put medium sinker half way down hooklink. Buried hook bait in outer skin of method mix.

    Monday:

6:30am left rod - 4lb 7oz female to left hand rod. Korum flat Method feeder (expo/halibut/black crumb/molasses/CSL/crushed source & tutti boilies) 1 X floating maze and 1 X sinking corn.

    7:45am - 6lb 4oz female to left hand rod. Korum flat Method feeder (expo/halibut/black crumb/molasses/CSL/crushed source & tutti boilies)1 X floating maze and 1 X sinking corn.

Missed run at 4pm Monday which could have been a liner. Haven't had a bite all day so was a bit hasty with the strike. Method feeder cast to the point of the island with single piece of fake

  5. Me personally no, the perch in there are not exactly rig shy so won't be put off by the thicker line. It also means that if you do hook that bonus tench then you still have a good chance of landing it.

The only time I drop below 10lb bs at Wingham is when float fishing and then I'll drop down to 6lb.

  6. Unfortunately I don't have the space to be able to keep unwanted larger items but have a couple of smaller items that might tempt someone to part with a couple of quid.

    Steve,

Just a thought but could the extender box and cables could go with the other set of TF alarms to create one lot?

  8. Hi John,

I'm told that if you want to single out the bigger fish the a stand up jig head just inched along the bottom is a killer method. I've not tried it myself yet but will be taking some next time I fish Bleheim palace lake as I think it would be a killer method on there.

These are the jig heads I've been advised to use:

  9. Thanks Steve.

I'm in the same boat at present as we've just moved into our new home and we have no broadband, TV or phone. Doing all this on my 3G which is probably gonna cost me a fortune :(

Remember to let your broadband provider know that you've been without the internet for a while as they should give you a little refund ;).
