58 anglers fished over 23 days to catch 96 skate.

Best result was a party of 3 catching 11 skate over 2 days!!!!!!! Loved to have been on that one?

I received the article and pictures from the anglers concerned and was going to run it this month but with all our crew wanting their trip printed in the July issue I decided to run it next month, as putting it alongside our trip would have been a bit cruel as they had done so well. All heart, that's me. :P

    Davy.

I was amazed at how well Normans outfit worked.

That stubby rod worked perfectly. And his `tiny` hooks.

I've spoken to Shakespeare and they are going

to investigate the commercial viability of producing 12/0's and even 14/0's. PS. I wouldn't normally class 10/'s as "tiny" but I see the practicality in a minimum of 12/0's in relation to the skate's lower jaw.

When`s anyone going to mail me pics? :(:(

If you are really good I'll send you the proof page of the article, in colour, being printed Monday, most shops should have it by the W/E, or Monday latest.

The required gear is interesting? 50lb class rod and 70lb braid, combined with a 200lb mono trace!! Seems that some of the anglers lost fish.

Someone should teach them how to shumfle.

The part I found most interesting. Is about an angler that lost a `good` fish, only to find that his bait was untouched when he retrieved it!!! I`ll bet they still haven`t worked that one out?

    Paul. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Obviously the anglers and tackle were not of the required standard. Probably south coast doggie bashers.

Norm, they are just winding you up mate. When I phoned the boat (several times) all I got was about your BM doggie(s), they were on a par with the 195lb'er :)

I am glad that you saw first hand the sacrifices that we all make to help Davy with his major contribution to the tagging programe and the conservation of the Common Skate, its just a shame that Davy is so unapproachable :D

Glad you managed the time for the trip, with even one skate I think you will agree it would have been worth it, come to think of it blanking would not be so bad when you take into consideration the setting and stretching a point a bit, the company :D

I know, we all have to make sacrifices in the name of conservation and how would Davy tag the skate if us anglers didn't catch them for him. Shame he has to import southern anglers to do it for him, but lucky for us. We did have a token Jock with Norrie though. All those records, worth importing the best.

Jeeeeeeeezus! What a weekend!! Doing it on the one day was amazing but then to repeat it the next day - Quality!!   :D

Chaps if you could send me the pix via MSN then I'll try to knock an article together   :D

I'm going to sulk now because all these skate have

relegated my 2lb blackmouth and double shot to also rans, it's just not fair. Seriously it was a fantastic weekend with the following records broken; EXISTING RECORD OF 8 SKATE IN A DAY BROKEN TWICE, OVER ONE TON OF FISH OVER 2 DAYS, FIRST 2LB BLACK MOUTHED DOGFISH ON THE BOAT, FIRST DOUBLE SHOT OF B/M DOGFISH ON THE BOAT, FIRST TIME I BOUGHT A ROUND WITHOUT BEING HARRASSED. Not a bad weekend at all. Look out for a full report and pictures in the August SAN. July if S.T gets his act together. :)

    Hi all

This takes me back. When I was a kid (40+ years ago) we regularly used Grasshoppers on a small brook near our house. It was deadly! Thinking about it a lot of other baits may have been as well if we had tried them.

I think Richard Walker said that his two biggest chub were caught on Frogs.

Crayfish used to be deadly. Wasp grubs a deadly bait (still are).

We could never afford maggots when I was young but we caught loads on lobworms, breadpaste, caddisfly larvae, caddis grubs, silkweed, shrimps etc.etc.

I always smile when I see some 'New wonderbait discovered'.

There is very little new in fishing.

    DF

I was amused to see in one of the puddle dipping mags an ad for "Tuti Fruti pop up boilies" the latest carp bait. Gosh those fish are spoilt for choice. What do we offer ours, squid, crab worm or mackerel, nothing special at all.

Seems 'Mr Plod' has become English Nature rather than concentrating on 'real crimes'.

All the time they're out chasing missing sturgeon they're leaving the motorist alone.
  9. spasor:

    Davey.

I think it will be my estate? Or Normans` if he still has it. Nothing too bulky Davey, my motor only has a 1 ton payload!!!

I still have it but it only has a 900kg payload and it has 223,000 miles on the clock and no radio.
  10. Norrie:

Whoooohoooo, Just had to let you know, just bought a Penn Int 50 Reel for £110,on Ebay, under Davys guidance of course....those Skate better watch out now.... :D:D My Darling wife bought it for me for my birthday.... :D

Hi Norrie, is it the 2 speed version? If it is that's a very good price if it's in good nick.

I paid £250 for a 50W single speed in the states and I thought that was a good price.

If you are really set on shooting birds then may I suggest you only shoot Cormorants.

I had a phone call from a very conservation-minded sea angler a couple of weeks ago.

He'd called to inform me of around 30 cormorants he'd found drowned in a gill-net.

My spontaneous whoop of delight completely threw him!

    Utterly shocked he was!!!

    Tight Lines - leon

When snorkelling in Langstone Harbour a couple of years ago I got caught in an unmarked gill net. Fortunately I cut myself free. Upon close inspection I saw several fish in the net so I informed Southern Sea Fisheries about this illegal net but Portsmouth was obviously too far from Poole for them to travel. I then informed the Langstone Harbour Board, what did I expect them to do about it was their reply, netting was legal. I explained that the net was unmarked, a danger to swimmers, in a bass nursery area, to dead protected birds in it, a tern and cormorant. Next time they had a boat that way they'd have a look was the response. I phoned the RSPB and they had the net removed within half an hour. My only regret was that they didn't want to wait and catch the culprits, they just wanted the net out. So if you have a problem with illegal netting, don't bother with the authorities, contact the RSPB. By the way, cormorants are a protected species so it is illegal to kill them.
  12. The shooting of magpies and other vermin is permitted under an "open licence" but you must have a reason for shooting them. I shoot every one I can as they cause absolute devestation to the birds nesting in my garden, and this is a deemed good enough reason under the open licence. This year there are no baby robins, one blackbird's, one thrush's, one doves nest destroyed, and that's just in my suburban garden, think what they do nationwide. They also killed a fledgling blackbird being fed by it's parents on my patio, I got that one. Unfortunately I am surrounded by houses and only half the owners will let me shoot them off their roofs, the others, "like to see the pretty black and white birds". What a bunch of ignoramuses, or is that, ignorami? Cheers, Norm B.

Went mullet fishing for a couple of hours today, got 4, biggest just over 4lb and 3 tiddlers about 2lb. Problem was I couldn't get away from the bass, had 6, biggest about 3lb, the others like peas in a pod, all about a pound and a half, good fun on light gear though, I'll try again tomorrow.

which reel would be best to get an abu 7000 or an abu 6500 ct.

The 6500 CT is a great reel for distance over clean ground but have you thought about a Daiwa SL20SH or SL30SH, great for fishing heavier line and it doesn't corrode. Even better but a bit dearer is the SL-X20 or 30 SHV, great reel and it's a flier with an anodised alloy spool, 3 bearings, 6 to 1 retrieve and a real power handle, I even use mine for uptiding it's that strong.

I think it was 1999 after I attended the Marine Conservation Seminar at Aston University and I had the front page headline of, Bass not MAFF, or something similar. I had someone from MAFF ring me and complain that I never gave them favourable headlines, I said "give me some good news for anglers and I'll give you favourable headlines". The good news was that MAFF had just cut the cod TAC (total allowable catch) for the North Sea to 35,000 tons, which was a conservation measure and would leave more fish for anglers. Coincidentally I had the latest figures for the total cod catch in the North Sea in front of me so I asked him how that would save cod for anglers, when despite their best efforts, the commercial fleet could only catch 32,500 tons of their quota. "Well, if you're going to be negative about it, there's no point in talking to you" he said, and hung up on me. MAFF, now DEFRA have never phoned me since and have stopped sending me any information what so ever. If you don't play their way, they won't play at all.

  16. Well done Leon. All of you at SACN and BASS do a fantastic job for ALL sea anglers, not just the bass anglers. Whether we get anything from this or later governments will be down to the likes of You, Malcolm, Tom etc. I'm more than happy to give you space in exchange for all the hard work that is done by you all for sea anglers, we ALL owe you a great debt and I mean it sincerely, to quote Hughie Green. Cheers, Norm B.

Don't eat the ones from the sewer outfall as sushi.
  18. Had my first mullet of the year last night, a lean fish of 3lb 3oz. I was fishing for bass but put a rod baited with bread out while waiting for the big one. I missed the first bite as I'd gone for a wander and it snagged me under the jetty and got free. The second bite was a self hooker and it fought all the way to the net, several times. Later in the year when it's fattened up it will be a 4lb fish.

  19. Ian Burrett:

Yeah thanks Leon for all your unsung work.

Whilst we are thanking people publicly, I would also like to thank Davy Holt for all his work on the Common Skate.

The sport wouldn't survive without these enthusiasts

I agree 100%. We all owe Leon and the likes of him, Malcolm Gilbert and a lot of others a huge debt.

I've madea couple of jibes about NFSA administration; but they are an important voice for sea anglers in England ...... perhaps they should be a little more expansive within the UK?

One of my gripes was that the AGMs should be held more centrally.

    Well done NFSA ......

A bundle of the SAN should arrive there tomorrow, my apologies for absense. Out in a boat Sunday, club match,it was booked last year, got to do all my work Saturday. Cheers and have a good day.
  21. Stella Fella:

As you can tell from my user name and i've posted about it as well,,i'm a Shimano fan,and have several of their reels. Are there many of you on here, who also favour them? Obviously my favourite one is my Stella 20000 FA,just a month old,i also have a 6500b baitrunner,a Tekato 800, a Trinidad 30, Tld15,and 25,and the 2 speed Tld50.

    Hi, I'm also a Shimano fan, I have the following, 2x TLD 5's, 1x TLD 10, 1x TLD 15, 1 x TLD 20, 2x TLD 30 2 speed,1x Beastmaster 4/0, 1x 20/30 Beastmaster, 2x 4500 baitrunners and 2x match f/s. In all honesty I do think the new Daiwa LD 2 Speed is far superior to the 30 2 speed Shimanos though.Norm B.

I think they're great, from 2's to 6/o's, especially the Owner models. A tip for worm threading, use a baiting needle, cheers, Norm B.

Don't forget the photos and a story. You can leave out the bit in the pub because you'll forget that anyway. Have a great time. Norm.B.
  24. Jim Roper:

Anybody got one of these rods or any views on them, good or bad?

Hi Jim, I saw them on the Mustad stand at Go Fishing at the NEC, the rep said he'd send me some to review but they haven't arrived, they looked OK but that's not the same as fishing with them. Maybe he'll read this and it will jog his memory.
