surely nothing is "actually" cheaper from abroad           doesnt the customs grab the vat and reduce the saving         and theres the excess weight charging on your bags ,the need to send it back for servicing and knowing its foreign    :(  none of that palava with old intrepids     :D   that was a time when BRITISH firms ripped you off now its just foeign ones    :D

The customs allowance is about £100, no tax on used sports gear, wind line on reels, use once. Last twice when I've come back from U.S. the customs have been conspicuous by their absense.

Even if you get clobbered you only get charged VAT at 17.5% and duty at about 3%, so on a 100% difference you still save 80%. I used to buy for a local tackle shop because Bass Pro's retail was less than the UK wholesale price, including taxes.

I'm glad to see that the differentials are rapidly disappearing, probably due to the fact that ABU is now an American company selling at American prices and the others have to compete.

  2. Satchmo:

A friend of mine contacted Mel Russ who told him that the adult adverts have now been removed from Sea Angler. Apparently they'd had a lot of complaints – Power to the people!!

I think you'll find that if SA do remove the adult ads it's not because of the complaints but because the shops have been told that it must go on the "top shelf" because of them. They make more from our £2.60's than from the adult ads, money talks.
  3. Hi, Yes there may well be dates later in the year, but I was thinking of getting away before the weather here got better. I can do groups of 3 or more, the only downside of later is, if the dollar rises, as you can see, their side is priced in dollars. May is not the best month as there are 2 bank holidays which means dearer air fares here. Probably Feb/March are the best months but if I get 3 it's a go. Chat amongst yourselves and come back to me and I'lll see what I can do, cheers, Norm B.

Two lifeboat volunteers are missing. One body has been found?

Two men went out to check mooring lines. One was the Barmouth harbour master, the other was also a RNLI volunteer.

    Their boat was found overturned.

They were both competent crew. But the sea found their weakspot?

I share with their famillies grief.

Sometimes our brave lads give up their lives, doing mundane duties. Make sure you`re not the plonker that gives them extra grief!!

  6. Norrie:

Norm, When you say cheapish, how cheap is that. :D:rolleyes:

Hi all, I'll send this to all interested parties. I'm awaiting a reply on the cost and dates. I was just offered a deal if I would host a group or two, I don't as yet know what the cost is, probably depends on the dollar rate. It would be great if we could get a group of 3,4 or 6 to go over. The price is ALL inclusive, that's drinks too, they obviously haven't met some of you in the Sailors Return. Cheers, Norm B.

    Hello Norman.

    Nice to see you.

    Paul.

Hi Paul, I saw you were here. How do you or any of this group fancy a cheapish trip to Costa Rica, see March issue. I've been offered a "Hosting" trip but I'm sure I could get us a discount. Anyone interested let me know and I'll find out some dates, cheeers, Norm B.
  8. Hi, a match rod will be fine for mullet, gars, mackerel, flatties and eels etc and the carp rods will be fine for anything else you can catch in harbours and creeks. Cheers, Norm B.

  9. ben88:

i am useally an inland lake and canal type perso (living in the westmidlands this is the only option) but i useually go camping to wales, around the harlech area and i was wondering if i could use my carp/match rods for sea fishing with lures or other methods and how i wud go about this (what lines hooks types of lures etc.

any advice at all will be brill.

    cheers

  10. Thanks for your support Alan, we've never been particulary strong in the north, even when we sent a lot of papers there we got very little in return by the way of match reports or adverts. Consequently they didn't get the coverage that say Plymouth or Weymouth get, if they don't send it, we can't print it. We used to have the Whitby carter boats advertise but they've had a bad winter so they cut back, again, it's a catch 22 situation. We don't claim to have the biggest readership in the country but pro rata and per capita we are the best value for money in advertising, and we have a targeted market, you can only get the SAN from sea angling orientated premises, unlike the others where you can pick them up anywhere. Arm chair anglers I believe they are called. Anyway, thanks to the support of the big companies like Daiwa, Shakespeare and YYS, we have been able to maintain our print rate and readership through the winter for the second year running, no mean feat after Parcel Force's huge price hike last year. Although we're greatful for their support, we appreciate the tackle shops and charter boats ads too.

We do try to get an accurate report from all areas, although we know that some tackle shops naturally tend to "fluff up" their reports, but we think it's at an acceptable level now. We've sorted out the blatant liars, they now accept that although they may sell a bit of bait by exaggerating the local catches, anglers aren't idiots and will shun that area in future if they think they've been conned into wasting their time and money travelling to a barren beach.

I think the charter boat reports are great, no b*** s*** there, it's as it is. Most skippers would rather tell their crew to cancel and rebook a month later as there are no fish around but anglers being optomists go anyway, just to get out, and they book again anyway. As I've already said, I'm glad I found this site, cheers, Norm B.

  11. I too have a pair of TLD5's, 1 in use and a new one in a box. I'm not sure of the spares situation so I'm loathe to use the new one. I also have a Daiwa Gold lever drag in the box, they discontinued it as soon as I'd bought it so I never used it, again spares.

Perhaps a concerted plea to Shimano to bring them back might work, it worked with Daiwa and the SLSH20, they must still have the tooling for them. There's nothing like them on the market. Cheers, Norm B.

    Norrie:

I believe that SAN is only distributed to those tackle shops that pay to advertise in SAN.

    Tight Lines - leon

Hi Leon, All the more reason to have reps of some sort, if the shops dont know about the magazine, they wont advertise. Catch 22 springs to mind.
Hi Gents, I do supply the SAN to non-advertising shops in certain areas to maintain our distribution but massively increased costs have meant a slight reduction of cover. I do have reps. in certain areas, ie; Greg Dunn for Cumbria/Scotland, Steve Smith, Wales, Heather Linfield, Whirrel, Mick Baker, Whitby, Mike Concannon and Colin Davies, Devon plus YYS & Sharnbrook Tackle send out copies with their orders. So as you can see, we are trying.

    Cheers, Norm B.

  13. Hi all

Thanks for saying such nice things about the SAN, I do appreciate it. On the subject of non-availability. Greg my Scottish reporter has moved to Cumbria and therefor only goes up for big opens, hence the lack of info north of the border but the SAN is available from Tackle&Guns,920 Pollockshaws Rd. Glasgow. I have had to cut out some distributors because,1. They never gave anything in return, like a match result, local report or advert. 2. Some shops were using the SAN as free, delivered bait wrapping. 3. Parcel Force put my rates up by 62% to £7.05 a bundle, which was just too much to absorb. To get round this I have brought in the Tackle Shop Directory at £10 per month. For this they get their shop details in the SAN and a bundle of papers every month. It costs me £17 to print and deliver a bundle of papers, so it's a good deal for them.

I think £10(TAX DEDUCTABLE) is a small price to pay for a shop to keep it's customers happy.

I will not compromise the integrity of the SAN, so some firms will not advertise with me, because if it's c**p, we say so, not "it's a great product for the price" like some do, just to get the advertising.

Enough of the propaganda, I'm glad I found this site, it's very informative and interesting. I'm happy to receive match reports, pictures etc and will print them, subject to space.
