  1. How do you celebrate it and where in the world did it get that name?

    Here you go Newt :)

"The holiday's roots can be traced to Britain, where Boxing Day is also known as St. Stephen's Day. Reduced to the simplest essence, its origins are found in a long-ago practice of giving cash or durable goods to those of the lower classes. Gifts among equals were exchanged on or before Christmas Day, but beneficences to those less fortunate were bestowed the day after.

This expression came about because money was collected in alms-boxes placed in churches during the festive season. This money was then distributed during to the poor and needy after Christmas."

I learnt something new as well  In the UK on Boxing day there are all sorts of crazy goings on,each town/village have developed their own traditions. Here in Whitley Bay a lot of folk feel there is a need to have a swim in the sea !!!!! Bearing in mind the North Sea is about 6 Deg C at this time of year it does tend to wake you up.

In our household we have a "Curry and Conkers day" :D Will add a few pictures to this thread after the event. To the uninitiated the game of conkers is

Have a good Xmas and Boxing Day mate :)

  3. Pride and place on our tree is a triangle Santa made by our daughter way back when she was 8, now she's 35 with three kids of her own.

Same on our tree :) Both Amanda and Christopher made a tree decoration at first school. They are on the tree now and are family "heirlooms"

  4. We have an artificial tree in the dining room but the wife does love having a real tree in the lounge at Xmas. I just go with flow to keep the peace

The tree we got this year was just under 8' and cost £40. I took this photo for our daughter who lives in Sydney and does like to see our tree every year. :)

  5. Early morning in the middle of winter. Where do you think everyone is ?

    Season's greetings all.

Oh it was Baltic alright  There would normally have been a few dog walkers about at that time but the overnight snowfall had put them all off :)

  6. What a great picture that is Clifftop :) Are they as noisy as ours in the UK - they can be deafening at times. Was repeatedly dive bombed by one this summer as must have been too close to its nest. Oh yes I got out of there double quick !!!

Took a picture of this lot in Loch Ryan back in 2008. Have never seen so many together at one time

  7. Just back from a week in Northumbria ,went to Amble where Jan and Newt went fishing on their last trip over here went to the end of the pier bit with some flowers which went into the water in memory of Jan ,it seemed a good thing to do.

Recall getting a big hug off Jan on Amble jetty after our day out on the charter boat. Thats a really nice thing to do Judy

  8. I was totally shocked by the tragic news. On Friday night I had posted on Facebook a video of my middle grandson doing a Michael Jackson dance. Jan commented what energy he had.

I had met and fished with Jan and Newt when they came over on a UK trip a while back. We fished on a charter trip out from Amble,Northumberland. A more friendly, outgoing couple you could not wish to meet.

Jan and I regularly corresponded about various things and she affectionately called me "Snatch" I also had tears rolling down my face when I heard the tragic news .

My thoughts are with you at this sad time Newt. There is one brighter star shining in heaven now.

RIP Jan from your Geordie mate "Snatch" :bye2:

  9. blimey 8 or nine onlookers ,obviously youve lost some inhabitants since we left :D

my camera most probably to slow on the shutter to catch anything as good as those but i expect a HD movie could get you some nice frames to cut

did you do "geordiepix" with a sparkler :D

:P As usual for this event there were thousands on the Links for the display and the roads around were all gridlocked !!! Thats one of the reasons why I went down onto the beach to escape the crowds

Hey Chesters you might recognise this photo seeing as how it was your old stamping ground. There was also a laser show on the Spanish City Dome. This one is for you mate :)

  10. I do enjoy the challenge of photographing firework displays. It is not an exact science and there are a lot of possible variations come into the equation. Lady luck also has to be on your side on the night !!!

Having said that I got down to the seafront an hour early to scout out the best position to photograph from. Ideally you want to be upwind from the display to try and miss as much "smoke drift" as possible.

Unfortunately this was not possible as it would have meant getting the moon and a fairground/lights in the shot. Finally decided on the beach virtually below the firing point.

    Settings were -

    ISO 100

    F13

    Manual - bulb mode

    Cable release

    Manual focus (used infinity)

    Lens 18-200mm

I was alternating between portrait and landscape mode, using a tight zoom for some of the shots and pulling right back to 18mm for the grand finale. With hindsight there are a few things I would have done different !!!! Anyway here are a few of the captures I got on the night. :)

  11. Well done Snatcher.

Have we seen your other winners?

Not sure, will have to dig out the old postcards to see which ones they were :) Looks like the pictures have not been tweaked by the council or printers.

Hi Fred arriving back in oz 06 Feb 2012 for a 3 month trip. Will spend most of the time in Sydney with our daughter, fiance and grandson. He is 8.5 months old now and I cannot wait to see him again. Have booked a 2 week trip over to Perth and will probably hire a car at some stage and drive up past Brizzy to the Sunshine Coast  Got plenty of fishing lined up when there.

What you and Mick up to these days ? Hope he is still fishing. Can you let him know I am coming back again.

  12. I wondered what the postman had knocked for this morning. Had actually forgot about my entry into this competition. Well chuffed to win it 3 years on the bounce !!!! The picture is now printed onto postcards and available from tourist information offices.

Whats the chances of winning it 4 years on the trot ? Fairly slim I reckon.
