  1. I agree with seafoods on this one.

The project “will lead to a loss of local accountability and a loss of local knowledge including details of local rescue plans, operating procedures, personnel, local dialects and place names.

I believe the loss of local knowledge was responsible for the death of three anglers in Loch Ryan a few years ago. The helicopter was searching in the wrong place for the first vital forty minutes.

I guess we have to be thankful the RNLI are independent; at least the government can't mess with their services.

  2. It is worrying that the EU can come out with a statement which is contradicted a few months later.

Borg assured in this letter below that Art 55 would only concern Tuna and Cod.

Thank you for your e-mail dated 25 June 2009 asking for clarifications on the stocks covered by Article 47 (on recreational fisheries) of the Commission’s proposal on how to improve the control of fishing activities in EU waters in the future.

I believe that there is a misunderstanding regarding our latest compromise proposal concerning the issue of recreational fisheries. In fact the Commission has not widened the scope of Art. 47. On the contrary, we have narrowed it down. Our original proposal foresaw that all fisheries covered by a multi-annual plan, of which we have currently ten in place, would fall under Art. 47.

In our latest compromise proposal, however, we have restricted this clause further so that only those species subject to a recovery plan would be covered. We currently have four such recovery plans in place. Within these four plans, only two species are fished by anglers, namely cod and bluefin tuna. Thus the vast majority of anglers will not be affected in any way by the proposal. This modification was made in accordance with the report adopted by the European Parliament on 6 April 2009.

Now Salmon Eels and Sharks are included. It does make you wonder where it will all end.

My biggest worry about the article 55 was a failure to give a meaning for the word "significant". The Swedish government has assessed recreational catches and the data from Sweden show RSA activity is responsible for 0.24 % of landings. Question is will that be considered significant?.

  3. Been fishing Mull and Luce Bay for years, but never in winter.

What is the pollock fishing like during winter months.

How long do the bass hang about

    Cheers

    DAVENIC

The fishing isn't good in winter around the MOG. The larger pollack move offshore around this time and will return in April/May. I occasionally hear of a bass being caught through the winter but a lot of anglers days goes into catching the odd fish

  4. Hello

Id like to take a month or two out this winter/spring and volunteer on a residential basis on a nature reserve somewhere remote.

I know the RSPB do a few things like this, as do the wildlife trusts. But does anyone know of any particular nature reserves in scotland or possibly ireland that might have use for a residential volunteer, or anyone know of any of highland estates which might do a similar thing, such as the places which have released beavers and the like.

Id like to get volunteering somewhere wild and remote, like the scottish islands. The cold doesnt bother me too much.

    any ideas?

I want to do these things while im still young and free!

    Cheers

    Dave

Not quite the highlands but i believe the RSPB have volunteers for their Mull of Galloway reserve

  5. One for the experts? LOL

I eventually solved the problem, a poster on a computer forum suggested he had tried everything to solve this problem and finally found the solution. Just pull the PC mains plug out the wall for a second or two.

Sceptically I tried it but it worked.

    Thanks for your posts

  6. Following the launch of the study into the economic impact of sea angling, Cabinet Secretary Lochhead committed to the creation of a Scottish RSA Strategy Group to explore the best way forward for the sport. See http://www.ssacn.org/a-letter-from-c-s-lochhead.

This was followed up in Holyrood by a Members Motion raised by Bill Wilson (West of Scotland) (SNP) supported by many other MSPs welcoming the creation of the Group. see http://www.ssacn.org/motion-sea-angling-strategy-group

Last week we met with the Marine Scotland (MS) lead for the Group to set the process in motion and we are expecting to meet again within the month to begin developing the Strategy.

In very broad terms (in no particular order) we shall be looking to :

    • Identify how aspects of the Marine Bill / Marine Park legislation may impact sea angling. See http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publicati...09/28115722/12

    • Ensure the future of those stocks of interest to sea anglers.

    • Identify key elements that are going to play a significant part in the future of sea angling.

    • Determine the processes by which sea angling can contribute to the wider marine strategies.

    • Ensure stock management frameworks adequately reflects the needs of the sea angling sector.

    • Ensure sea angling opportunities are not artificially restricted.

    • Identify activities by which we can increase the awareness and understanding of sea angling.

    • Increase opportunities for the socially and physically disadvantaged.

We are looking to develop the next level of detail and would like to ensure we have captured all the key issues. Please use the feedback form on http://www.ssacn.org/input-to-sea-an...strategy-group to identify any areas you feel strongly about and/or any actions you feel we should propose.

  7. Was on Shimano's web site before posting, they only start with a 15.

In 2005 Norrie said the TLD 5's were like rocking horse poop...

    http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Shimano...city-t5463.html

    Would a 10 be 6500 size / weight ?

Have been using Abu 5500's the last couple of trip's and as i'm getting into bigger

and bigger fish, they are a bit under gunned line capacity and drag wise.

Norm, would like an Avet (just for the tart status) but which one ? for Bass, Pollock, Cod, drifting wrecks in the channel ?

    Cheers guys.

    Sean

    B)

The TLD 5 and 10's were replaced by the 1000 and 2000 charter specials. They are basically the same reels with a level wind

  8. Could someone please help before i tear all my hair out. LOL

I stuck an mp3 player into a USB port and it seemed to recognise it and called it my J drive. I then put my external hard drive (which is usually my j drive )into another USB port, and up popped a window stating the hard drive couldn't be recognised.

Unfortunately my pc won't now recognise any mass storage device now including memory sticks which work fine on my other PC.

I have tried to follow microsoft help guides, updated drivers etc etc and everything looks OK in the device manager.

    USBmesssge.jpg

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  9. Hi Ian,

Every species in your list is an Elasmobranch; the preservation of which you clearly hold dear, but they do not feature in my fishing world at all, nor are they of very much importance to the Scottish fishing industry on the whole.

Zero bycatch on porgies? I don't know of a directed UK porgie fishery, so all that means is the odd porgie that gets caught in a net gets dumped instead of being sold? i can remember short lived directed fisheries 20 years ago that took (to me ) frightening numbers of female porgies, but that was 20 years ago..

25% by catch limit on "Rays". What does that mean in the real world?

I know you have worked your socks off to do good Ian, but these victories mean little than i can see.

    Chris

I appreciate that elasmobranches don't feature in your fishing world but how much of that is down to the depletion of the stocks. The rays, skate porgie and spurdog used to be as common on the Scottish east coast as they were on the west coast. In fact the majority of the porgie landings came from your coast.

The 0 porbeagle TAC has also stopped visiting nations like the faroe islanders from fishing in Scottish waters

Fish stocks are so low on the west coast that the 25% ray bycatch limit has stopped a targeted fishery because there simply isn't enough of anything else to make up the other 75% It doesn't go far enough IMO but it's a start

Elasmobranches will always be caught as bycatch but the prevention of a targeted fishery has and will continue to reduce commercial catch levels.

Sharp protection is a relatively new thing and there is a long way to go but hopefully the community plan of action will tighten up the loopholes and implement sustainable shark management

  10. Rubbish!! Zero TAC means bugger all in terms of protection. It might make some people feel good about themselves and feed a few egos, but it doesn't stop the fish from being caught and, in a lot of cases, discarded.

You see. This is precisely what I'm going on about. Token gestures that do sod all to benefit anglers, or fish stocks, being lauded as great achievements and victories. Meanwhile, the real issues go unaddressed. Well done, give yourselves a big pat on the back.

Hardly insignificant if your a spurdog. The longliners that used to visit Scotland have been sold off

The Cornish long fishery for Porgies has stopped.

The proposed targeted fishery for tope was stopped.

If you check the landings of all these species you will see they have all reduced significantly.

The full protection on common skate means an important RSA fishery has been protected.

  11. I think you MIGHT be stuffed mate. What you really want is a camera that records to tape and has a firewire port so that you can get a DV file from it.

Pop the DVD in your PC DVD drive and let us know what files and folders you can see on there. Can you see a folder in the root called VIDEO_TS?

    Hiya

    Thanks for your help

Its a strange one IF you use a minidisc R it puts in a vr_movie format. A RW puts in a TS_format.

I think i am a step nearer as i downloaded a programme called VideoReDo which is supposed to recognise VR_Movie files

  12. If any one can help me I would be eternally grateful. I have spent many hours trying to get round this problem. I have a canon DC201 camcorder which finalises a mini disc into a VR-movie format.

    My problem is this.

The mini disc will play complete on the TV and PC but when i try and open it on the PC for editing Nero, Pinnacle, Roxio. and videolan doesn't recognise the format.

Ha! easy I though All I need is a video converter.

I downloaded AVS media and a few more since to convert it a usable format but they only convert the first scene shot or file.

Is there a way round this?

  13. Shark campaigners are seeking to change the legislation so all skate and rays species are landed whole.

At present it is difficult to ascertain the detailed assessments of population trends of any individual ray species as an ID is difficult by just the wings.

Commercials will also have to take them to the market as individual species not lumped together as skate

This was recommended by the ICES Elasmobranch working Group.

  14. The SSACN Sunnart Spurdog Tagathon will be going ahead on the 15th and 16th of November

The main aim of the weekend is to tag as many spurdog as possible from the shore and boat in Loch Sunnart and raise the public awareness of the urgent need for sharks, ray and skate protection in Scottish waters.

We need to get some sort of organisation into the event, so all shore anglers are within calling distance of an experienced tagger/tagging kit and each boat has a tagging kit and knows how to use it.

Depending on numbers we will split shore anglers into teams of perhaps 4-6 people and each team will have a tagging kit and a team leader who will have had experience in tagging.

Much of this will have to be sorted well in advance as communications will be nigh on impossible around Sunnart

The SSACN website will shortly have a couple of pages designated to the Tagathon and access to this will be via an individual login procedure.

To receive your login passwords you will need to register your name and email address with Davy Murray - WSF Forum name conger conger by pm or by email dm_viragev8@hotmail.com

    Accommodation

Regards the accommodation; most folk have already got sorted so if you haven’t, I would book in somewhere quickly. I think the main centres where people will be staying are around Strontian and Salen. One of the pages on the SSACN website will have an accommodation page shortly where people can help others get fixed up

If you fancy joining what looks like to be (judging by the response) a fantastic weekend then please register with Davy.

We can then sound out emails via a distribution list

    ………………………………………………………………………………………

Just a bit of back ground for those not aware of SSACN’s project and the plight of the Spurdog.

    Spurdog (Spiny Dogfish) are

    • exceptionally slow-growing and vulnerable to overfishing

    • heavily exploited primarily for European demand for meat

    • considered Critically Endangered in the Northeast Atlantic by the IUCN

    • inadequately protected and in danger of collapse from overfishing in Europe

    • in urgent need of stronger conservation measures

Evidence from many anglers suggests that the Lochs Sunnart and Etive and surrounding waters have a unique resident population and that the spurdog pup in the region.

We believe the Scottish Government could provide real leadership by setting aside this area to provide a springboard for the regeneration of the Species.

However, the Scottish Marine Directorate has stated they need scientific data before they are willing to take any action, such as declaring the area a Nursery area.

This would also protect the local Common Skate populations

The only way to gather the evidence is by tagging, which will be carried out in two phases

    1. Our members are already tagging the fish with standard plastic darts and this information will be collated by the UK shark tagging programme.

    See http://www.ukshark.co.uk

    2. The Scottish Government’s marine scientists at the Fisheries Research Services (FRS) will administer an enhanced programme using satellite tags providing we can raise the necessary £25,000 to pay for tags and satellite time.

Sea Life Centres have SSACN notice boards highlighting the Spurdog Tagging programme in 12 of their centres (many thousands of people will see these every week) with collection boxes helping to raise the necessary money.

  15. Many of the charter boats down this way (especially the big fast ones) are not commercially registered, so soon, i have been led to believe, will be classed as pleasure craft and so loose the right to take red desiel - so maybe pump prices are not so far away for them?

If it is true, and they are already finding it hard, things are about to get a whole lot harder for them.

I doubt this SS. I have been claiming the duty back for years on the petrol. I can't see the difference

  16. For those in the Border region a short news clip highlighting the fact that tope can be killed North of the border but are protected south of the border should be on tomorrow or wednesday night.

We filmed today and within 10 minutes of dropping the anchor had a treble hook up of tope and a Huss all on at the same time on just four rods.

The intention was to stay until we caught one, The crew were back ashore in about one hour.

  17. The commercial fishermen within the NWWRAC wrote to the commission to try and have the 5% bycatch rules changed allowing them to catch more spurdog.

Fortunately the commission has declined this request with a distinct change of language which should be welcomed and looks good for further shark protection for the EU shark community plan of action, (CPOA) the results of which are due later this year.

It now appears they are taking on board others views by stating "I understand that there is a strong divergence of opinion within the RAC between the catching sector and the other sectors."

The commission also used the ICES advice as a reason for not having a change of heart

The letter to the RAC finally concluded ….”In the meantime however the 5% by-catch is the main management measure that will discourage fishers from targeting spurdog aggregations, given that effort reductions have been less than originally anticipated. The 5% by-catch limit is clearly a necessary incentive”

This can only be described as a victory for common sense

To see the SOS response to the CPOA see
