  3. I have seen them spawn as late as mid July on the Wear.

I was free lining a bit of streamy water and had foul hooked a couple of good chub before I realised what was happening.

It was just as though as switch had been turned on. I climbed the bank and sat watching for a couple of hours. As david t says, they were totally oblivious to my presence.

I can even remember the date (13th July 1996) as I received a parking ticket from Hackney Borough Council dated for the same day.

When they refused to accept I was actually fishing in Durham on that day, I told them I would be happy to see them in court. Not heard a word since. (they even got the colour and make of car wrong)

  4. Wouldn't like to guess how far Boroughbridge is from the sea, but its a hell of a lot further than a hop, skip and jump. They have to run up the Ouse before its called the Ure.

Sat for a couple of hours watching brook lamprey spawning in Cod Beck a few weeks ago; that's a tributary of the Swale, same river system. Then some plonker thought it great fun to send his dog in after them.

We used to get the big sea lampreys up the Wear, (and flaties) but since a new weir was built at Chester le Street I have not seen any. They used to be huge, frightened the life out of you if you stood on one when night fishing for sea trout.

(if one is posh substitute 'one' for 'you') :)

  5. Copied this from my club forum board; cant put a link because its P/W protected.

    Also the pics are missing

Arrived 10:45PM last night (15th) found a decent and likely swim, started laying in some loosefeed, by 11:30 the swim was boiling with fish and I was clammering to cast a line.

To the final strokes of Durham Cathedrals bells cast out (00-00 acording to my mobile), instantly and before the chime had ebbed away I had a 3lb 6oz chub in the net, the time was still 12-00 midnight when the fish slid over the net, by the time I unhooked the fish it turned 12-01

Fantastic myst clouds billowing down the river and then spiraling out over the neighbouring fields. though most of it's majesty is lost on a 5 second exposure hence the water looking a bit odd.

  6. There is a very similar thread on the Maggotdrowners forum boards

Could (simple) Simon also be 'river roamer'?

Steve B; I would keep my head down on the no licence thing. :headhurt: I can still remember two bearded chubbers fishing the Cherwell without a licence one Saturday in 1987. Something about a tackle shop in Kiddlington running out of the 7 day Thames licence. :cc_surrender: ( I did have a Yorkshire, Northumbria, Anglian and North West though) I played safe and fished the Gt Ouse on the Sunday :)

  7. I came across half a dozen on the Wear last week.(6-6-06) Two were in the process of setting up three rods each together with alarms. I asked if they did not realise there was a close season. Yes was the reply, but we're trout fishing.

I then asked what bait they were using; trout pellet was the reply. (with buckets of hemp)

I did telephone the EA saying I wanted to report illegal coarse fishing activity on the river Wear.

What led me to believe it was illegal coarse fishing, I was asked.????

Not sure what the outcome was/is. Not sure what type of training (if any) these EA telephone people get.

I actually know the EA head of enforcement for the area and keep telling him if his lads want to top up their browney points all they have to do is take a daily trip to the two or three areas of free water in the City. Do they? Do they hell!

Report someone for even looking at sea trout out of season and they are there before you can switch the 'phone off.

  8. Some of my local clubs are trying to compete with the commercials by increasing the stocking densities on existing fisheries, or even creating very heavilly stocked puddles.

What do Forum members think of this? Should clubs try to be different, or should they go the way of the commercials?

My club has recently created a couple of 'commercail' type stillwaters that are now producing match weights to almost 90lb. We still cater for the 'speciialist' stillwater angler and provide miles of excellent river fishing for salmon, brown & sea trout, big grayling, dace, roach (to 3lb) big chub and barbel (plus the odd pike to 29lb) and our membership levels have increased year on year over the last three, so we must be doing something right. :) And all this for just £47-00/year, full senior membership. :)

We also have an excellent web site DurhanAnglers with very active members only and open forum boards. (its had more postings than AN since I 1st posted this reply)

  9. "The PAC is launching a special extended membership offer to celebrate the start of the season."

Does not the PAC advocate not fishing for pike until the autumn, depending on the water/angling pressure. I believe its one of their recommendations, so what's this 'start of the season' bit?

  10. I agree with Les M, why should anyone have to be to renew their membership? They always fall on the same date.(bleeting heart's, no one reminded me)

I would imagine that most clubs are suffering from the affect of the 'commercials' and can do without the expense of having to chase membership renewals. Most clubs are a bargain anyway compared to what some commercial fisheries charge. Put your money into your local clubs, they will be there long after everyone gets sick of bagging up with carp. I can honestly say that I have not spent 1 penny on a commercial water.

  11. NorthEast Angler

Brad Publishing Ltd are set to launch NorthEast Angler in mid-May.

The format will be similar to sister publication North West Angler, which is in it's sixth issue.

With news, features, sea sections, game sections, junior pages, tackle tests, q+a and an extensive match results service.

This publication obviously needs contributions from local clubs

Therefore any information that you may want to send for use in the publication...fishery reports, news, match results and especially pictures...you can now e-mail to me at Ian@northwestangler.co.uk and i will be happy to use them.

    Kind Regards

    Ian Brogden

    Match Editor

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Recieved the above via e-mail

I beleive initially the publication will be distributed via local tackle shops

  12. I always understood that unless a company was providing a service/supplying to another business/trade, all prices were inclusive of VAT. When you get your till receript at Tesco/Asda the total does not list VAT seperately.

Just checked a Sainsbury's receipt found in my pocket: :) Paris Piper Pots. £1-38 Balance due, £1-38, Cash £2-00, Change £0-62. No mention of VAT :)

  13. Has anyone tried hair rigging Sanatogen one a day multi vits and minerals??

No but I have caught chub on hair rigged glycerin suppositories.

Great for teasing out thoes big old loggerheads (4g adult size) :)

  14. Saw a guy in Tesco's car park with a 'Blue Badge' displayed in his car, the speed at which he ran he could have given Lynford Christie a run for his money. These are the people who can now qualify for a concessionary rod licence; whilst the poor people such as those with a mental handicap or other similar disability will have to pay for the full licence. Really well thought out!!!

Well done Dafydd and the BDAA, you all deserve a slap on the back!!
