  1. i think mel russ is winding people up [new bait as good as peelers at third the price, sea angler nov], i fished sainsburys indonesian prawns at my local beach club last night i had one proper bite in three hours, i was getting tiny little taps on my rod every time i put a fresh one on, but when the taps stopped i reeled in to find a headless prawn,it seemed the fish would only eat this part. my mate fishing next to me using lug and macs had 30 odd yting and pout to weigh in and i was the only one to blank out of 20 anglers,so there was plenty of fish about and lots of these were yting which lets face it will eat anything, i paid £3.25 for 8 of these prawns = 40p a shot so draw your own conclusions.
  2. absolutely kentangler, ive caught them on float gear off my local harbour arms, 3AA crystal waggler size 8 hook 5lb line and avon rod, bait was breadflake, which has also acounted for mullet grey and red, bream black and gilthead bream, macs, gars, shad, herring, pout, and loads of school bass oh, and i did hook what seemed a very large mac at first but after emptying half the spool of line it came off, no mullet has ever taken that much line at that speed before so dont no what it was? all this action on a few loaves of homepride, who needs lug? reminds me of holidays in the med years ago so things might be changing, and for the best.
  3. your absolutely right kent angler, the days of catching cod off the beach are gone for good, you may still get the odd codling? but boy do you have to put the time in to achieve even that, i have had about enough trying to catch whats not there so i am selling up the useless stiff poles and now using only carp, avon, and fly rods for my fishing and enjoying it far more, this is the future, but i am still amazed at amount of anglers who still think otherwise and continue to fish the same way we did 40 odd years ago, still there loss. as for warmer water species well ive lost count of the times i have caught red mullet this year and shed loads of black bream including 2 small gilt heads within 20 yrds of the beach, i also know that the triggers are there as well and next year be the first in this area to catch one off the beach hopefully, along with the grey mullet and bass i catch on the fly rod i am thinking only to start my fishing in may and finish in october, and forget about the cod fishing for i fear it as gone the same way as it did in canada.
  4. dont hold youre breath wotsinaname, i was hoping to get a few charter skippers opinions when i posted this but like norm b said, you catch nothing you still pay, so its in there interest if there is fewer fish inshore to catch, because if there was plenty of good fish to catch close in or off the beach there would be no need to pay 60 quid to steam 30 miles or more to do the same.
  5. thanks for clearing that up leon, so the policing of any of the eu fishing policies and laws, will be based at a spanish office, and i presume all the records of these will be kept there to. so there was some element of truth to what i saw on the telly then. i take it youre not at all sceptical or apprehensive about this then leon.
  6. at last some one talking sense salar, instead of this letter writing to mp's and moaning about are lot, which i have been guilty of, thats one of many good ways of getting the message out that us anglers are fed up with getting the butt end of the fishing policies and we are not standing for it. i'm up for that' if i can get some one with with a boat and trailer to go with.
  7. well leon, i dont know if its in black and white, but i did see it on one of the news channels when they first drew up the constitution. and youve got to ask your self what is the largest industry spain has in the eu, fishing, and they get the biggest rebate, and they want to build more modern trawlers and not decommission them. our goverment wont care about a dying industry here, and besides, us anglers will fill the small financial gap with the proposed sea fishing license, and the 1.3 billion generated as already stated, the only thing us anglers can do is to help scupper the constitution and vote NO at the referendum.
  8. ok. lets change it a bit,so do we get value for money from the charter boys who cant seem to lose,ie, if you catch jack ***** they still get paid. and as for trawlermen not getting a wage if not catching, whats all this subsidies rubbish? and im sure they are not frightened of claiming job seakers allowance at the local dole office either, [probably both at the same time]
  9. just how many would? or would they feel it to be a negative rather than a positive thing to do, or dont we? have as much bottle as the french.
  10. it the reply button to soon. maybe if us anglers donated a few billion to the labour party we might be able to get something out of them???? dont think thats gonna happen..........
  11. no as ive said, he has already sold the rights to europe, spain to be precise, the only way to stop it is for you and me and 51% of the turn out at the referendum to vote NO
  12. missed word cod, meant to say,20lb cod off the beach.
  13. how many of you guys no of the done deal that this goverment has just signed up to. re [eu constitution] which has given spain the running of all the fishing through out the whole of europe including ours. now there is something we do have a chance to stop. if blair and is rear end licking ***** get in again next year, just vote NO on the eu constitution referendum. i think all politicians are hypocrytes and they are going only to do things for thier own personal benefit, when are people gonna realize that, you are far better off writing to your local newspaper high lighting the problems with over fishing in your erea, atleast some of the general public have a chance of seeing your views. one other point i would like to make, i dont think the people who make money directly from sea angling do enough, and i think they would like the situation to stay the same, ie if you could catch a 20lb off the beach why would you pay 50-60 quid to a skipper to try and catch one 30 miles over a wreck? think about it, and whats this youve got to have all this expensive tackle like rods that cast half a mile because, and reels thats got mag breaks etc, in the sixtys you could go down the beach and they did with a hand line and catch that 20lb cod, its all a load of crap what you are told from them, and they are no help what so ever, and if they dont agree ask them what have they personally done to stop the commercials from over fishing
  14. ok my club comp was won on monday with 26lb. fish caught were codling yting pout dogs dabs flounder sole bass and 1 small bull huss. the comps are fished for 3 hours so i suppose the fishing is quite good at the moment, mind you the winner is an england international. i was ill unfortunately so i could not fish otherwise i'm sure the result would have been different. i have beaten him before, oh venue pevensey bay east sussex, probably wont find a beach now at the weekend.
  15. south african style casting is what we now call off the ground at least it was 20+ years ago, the one spur-hound is refering to is the [no brain macho man im on a package holiday cast]
  16. oh sorry didnt recomend a rod did i well i am a big john holden and paul kerry fan and they seam to like these new daiwa supercasts and i must admit i tried one as well as the zipplex 50/50 and found the daiwa just as good and its much cheaper by far. both are good for 200 yds and nice fishing rods. after casting them poles youve been using these type of rods might feel a little bit givvy but you will be able to bend them more and i bet youl cast further.
  17. ok whatsinaname i will try to explane like it as been done in sea angler and most casting books. when you do your otg cast imagine your standing in the centre of a clock face, with your casting direction were you want to cast to, at 12 o'clock and the tip of the rod at 6 o'clock, you may have the tip further around at 7 or 8 o'clock but doesnt matter for now, if we stick to the 6 o'clock version the line and lead from the rod tip is swung back and layed on the ground, the tip of the rod will be on the number 6 and the lead will be outside this= [outside rod tip] how much depends on length of leader, if you swing the lead and drop it on the ground from an inswing the rod tip will still be at the number 6 but the lead will be in between you and the number 6= [inside the rod tip] hopefuly you understand so far. the south african is exactly the same as the otg cast but extended a little further round on the clock face to at least 9 o'clock. as for those rods well, if your learning to cast with those poles i am surprised you have got this far. just remember if you extend the cast round from 6 o'clock to 7 8 9 or as far as you can, turn your hips first then your shoulders, [like a golf swing realy]and always start your cast by turning your head to look to where you want it to go, far and high hopefully. good luck.........stav
  18. my advice to anyone new to casting is to go a few beach comps in the day and watch them cast.you will see it all, pendulum, otg, aerial otg, easy cast, uni cast, layback, backcast,to a over head thump with a very long and through actioned rod. these cast are all capable of putting a 5oz lead and bait over 150yds. i used the pendulum for years, but now i prefer to use a lay out like the otg,for max power i extend the arc similar to the south african but instead of it laying on the ground i swing the lead out as i would, to do the pendulum, but start the cast when lead has reached its maximum outward swing, thus keeping the lead outside of the rod tip which is far better at building a progresive and smoother compression of the rod, and the timing is much less critical as with the pendulum when the inswing takes the lead inside the rod tip. ive found little to choose in distances between them but i found my aerial south african style the best for all types of fishing and much more user friendly. i think the pendulum cast personaly causes to many problems for the average angler who only gets to fish once a week and does not have time to practice. leave the big pendulum swings and stiff telegraph pole rods to the tournament boys with large ego's,learn a simple otg cast, extend the arc, aerialise the lead if you dont want to cast it off the ground, and use a rod with a bit of flex in the but coupled to fastish tip, and there is no reason why you should not be abled cast with the best down on the beach. then you can concentrate on your fishing and not that damn pendulum cast.
  19. large tiger prawns i presume thats what you guys are refering to, have been about for ages.you can get them from most stores ie tescos asda safeway etc, but between about 11 to 13 quid for about twenty of these prawns seems an expensive way to feed the yting. better off using macs or spend it on lug, and who knows you might then catch a codling if your very lucky.
