  1. I've had a reply and tbh I am a little concerned that the only points really covered are fish theft. It is a concern to lots of anglers but there are far more things that are of concern than that. I have e-mailed Alan and asked for answers to a few questions I have raised. Not least of which, what are the main features of his financial plan, what else does he have on his agenda, what does he plan to do about anti's, boaters and cyclists (the same people in some instances). What does he see will be the roles of the NFA and FACT. Plus a few more. When I get an answer to all those points,

I will decide whether to join or not.

  2. I hope it is better than the previous one that was not very good. Even in that video it shows 2 shots dispensed and the second prevents the cut from being made into the middle of the shot as the cutter is pushed to the side. IT then has a 'free' video included to show you how to use it! Must be simple then!

How much does it cost? If I were you I would stick to Stotz.

  3. I've got an almost mint reprint in stock, not to mention a 1st edition that is not only rare in itself but is also signed by Bernard Venables!

Lucky man Steve. I took that book into hospital with me as a small child. It was the only thing I had to remind me of home. Got me through it and it was constantly read and re read as I grew up. I think it must have got so damaged it was eventually thrown out after I left home. I bought a reprint when my son was old enough to read. :)

  4. All the PAA and NAA coaches are vetted by the CRB and given a certificate to confirm they have no criminal records. Most coaches also belong to fiscoach.org who also require a site of the CRB certificate before issuing their licence. Sports Coach UK and PAA membership automatically gives very good insurance cover to all their members.

However, a number of people who pass the Level 2 coaching exam and get their badge do not join any of the the above organisations so there is no easy way to see that they are covered or have a First Aid qualification. I ALWAYS ensure that I avoid situations where any accusations could be made against me. It is quite simple really.

Do not allow anyone into your car at any time.

Have more than one person with you at all times.

If someone asks to leave a child with you on their own, don't do the lesson!

Be nice to people and largely they will be nice to you.

  5. I think I will try ledgering on its own when I next go fishing.

Is seems the general census is that you should do one rather than the other, and beacuse I'm a begginer, I think it might be wise to listen to advice!!

I've got a match this Saturday on the local canal, (should be a laugh at least) which I will be floating and I think I'll go Sunday for the ledgering, I'll let you guys know how I get on.

    Thansk for your advice

    Toby

Very wise Toby. Unless you do it properly, you are likely to get the wrong idea of the potential when legering. Stick to one thing at a time and master it properly rather than trying to do too much at once. You will probably find that a leger outfishes a float in a number of instances at this time of the year. When conditions aren't ideal it is alot easier to fish a leger anyway.

  6. About 30 minutes later one of the youngsters came over to me and proudly announced "me and my mate have both started to catch fish, thanks to you!" The Asian girls asked me what they were doing wrong, so I plumbed their lines and set their rods and - guess what? - they also started to catch!!

My point is - Stop knocking the youngsters and help them!!

Oh! My tirade at the old man seemed to help - he caught a 3lb+ Roach and sent it to me for identification as "he hadn't got a clue!!"

It is great feeling kleinboet when they thank you for helping them isn't it? I do a little tour around the Suffolk Water Park between lessons at times. I take a few cheap floats, a box of maggots, a plummet, disgorgers, shot, line and hooks. It is amazing how many times you can make a few changes to tackle, plumb up, feed a little (which is where most fall down) and totally transform someone's day. It gives you a great feeling.

Another true story. A few weeks ago I was on one of my wanders when I came across a man and his lad fishing. They had just caught a carp of 9lb off the top on crust. When congratulating them it transpired that they had only been fishing a few weeks. The lad had been pestering his dad to take him fishing for months. His Dad wasn't all that keen having fished as a boy and caught very little. Eventually he relented and took his lad fishing. Asked for some help and caught a few fish. Now neither he nor his lad can get enough of it. He reckons he thinks about it all week in the office and can't wait for the weekend to come around again. He said he is probably keener than his lad now.

  7. Well done puddin. That is what it is all about, enjoying yourself. My daughter is quite a good angler but unfortunately doesn't have the time to go these days. My wife is also very good, too good sometimes when she beats me!

The GVAC that I mentioned in my first post has a number of lady anglers and young girls including a lady NFA coach.

  8. Last night's programme just went to show how planned fishing trips often go wrong. It is annoying when you get to a river and find it up and unfishable. Imagine that when you have travelled all those miles and hours and spent the money getting there and on the film crew etc. So near and yet so far from your destination for a couple of days and then when you do get there the fishing is pretty average to say the least. I think I may have sworn somewhat. How Charles apparently managed to keep his cool is amazing really, I am a very patient person but I don't know how I could have coped with the frustrations of that trip. Perhaps he would tell us what he was really thinking!

Puts it all into perspective really.

  9. In a age of 'convenience shopping' you are probably onto something there bobster! The amount of insane baits you can buy in jars, vacuum - packed, canned, preserved with 'special amino acids', glugged with this and that, frozen, semi-frozen, etc etc - this is just a natural extension and there must be a gap in the market for your idea!!

I once saw a 'maggot - vending machine' in a car park by the River Trent one day (wish I had taken a photo of it now). I wasn't fishing but was lost on my way to a business meeting. It looked just like a soft-drink vending machine - except there was a picture of a giant maggot on the front of it!! You picked what colour of maggots you wanted, put your money in and out would pop a pint of maggots!! I wish I could remember where it was now.... who knows, maybe in 30 years time these machines will be the norm?!!

There were a few of those machines around East Anglia. - 'Baggit with Maggit' The bait was refrigerated but wasn't brilliant and they never caught on.

  10. Very short-sited imo. It is the only thing that AM have over AT.

In the Tackle & Guns mag survey, of the £515,800,000 spent on angling, £169,700,000 was spent on pleasure and match fishing, £110,700,000 on carp, £138,300,000 on game fishing and £97,120,000 on sea fishing. There was also £103,300,000 spent on 'bait', but I assume that this is largely carp baits and ground baits rather than live baits of any type.

That shows that there is a huge following for sea fishing nad you would have thought the weekly mags would have wated to cover it.

  11. There has just been some research published in December's T & G (a trade magazine) about the retail angling trade. Angling had a total spend of £515.8 million in the UK during 2005 and that excludes ancillary costs like boats, fuel, accomodation etc. It did include the enormous bait industry we have now. That should make angling an important part of any governments long term strategy.

I would be very interested to know what the commercial fishing boys (trawlers and other netsmen) turnover was and how it compares. There are over 18,000 people employed full time in the trade and 5,500 part time workers. Interesting stats I feel. 2,703 retail outlets although there have been 136 businesses closed in the last year.

The outlook as seen by the trade is very positive. I must admit that I am slightly surprised by this last comment though.

Carp fishing shows a huge increase in trade, 42% over the last 3 years. I am not surprised at the last statistic.

    Interesting stats though.

Any thoughts - shouldn't this give us a say about water quality, netsmen, cormorants et al?

  12. Here is the reply e-mail ...copied and pasted;

    Dear Bob

Many thanks for the mail regarding Mr Williams.

It isn't normal practice to discuss internal business as all

transactions I enter into are private and only of relevance to the

parties involved. Obviously I wouldn't expect you to tell me how much

    you earn per year.

That said, this particular subject is sensitive so I think you ask a

fair question to which I reply Nigel will be receiving no pounds, no

shillings and no pence. Neither did he at any time request payment.

I hope this explains things in full.

Tight lines for the winter ahead.

    Richard.

    Good!

  13. ColinW. I have just agreed with every word you said on another thread. I just cannot understand how you can post what you did on this. Just step back and have a long hard think about it and then think again.

Fishing isn't just about catching as you said in the other post. If you want to fish livebaits and can't catch them, then hard luck. There is always tomorrow, next week or even next year.

  14. I once met a guy from Surrey at Loch Lomond. It had taken him nine hours to get there and he spent the entire week sitting in his bivvy. I spent the week messing about in my boat, walking my dog on the islands, drinking in the pub, having a laugh with the like minded souls and catching the odd pike. I expect if the man from Surrey watched this program he thought it needed a greater "fishing content". I think what is at issue here is what "fishing" actually means!

I think that you have hit the nail on the head Colin. Some 'anglers' think it is all about catching - what a sad way to live!

  15. The more I read of the interview in Angling Times issue out today, the more convinced I am that Williams has done this loads of times before. The quotes are straight from the Angling Times and I presume Williams has agreed to have them included in the AT. I don't think he is very intelligent either.

Another quote "I was aware that livebaiting is banned in Ireland, so I was going to kill what I planned to take over and use them as fresh bait. I know people will say that's b*llocks, but that's what I am sticking to. I have to don't I?" Says it all Williams.

On the one hand you say you have held your hands up and pleaded guilty on the other it seems as though you are just sticking to a story. I could go further but presume there are legalities involved.

By the way, if your solicitor really said you could fight it and probably get away with it, then I suggest you get yourself a new one quickly!

The final quote that I will make here shows the intelligence of the guy.

"It's unrealistic to expect pikers to stop livebaiting. All I'd say is if you're going to do it illegally, use baits that have been health checked"

How Nige? Take them along to the EA and say that I am going to illegally use these roach as livebaits I would like them health checked" If you get a fish movement order and you weren't going to use them in the lake district or abroad then it wouldn't be illegal. It may be against some fishery rules and reg's but certainly not illegal.

In fact I use fish livebaits myself. Both at sea and for pike and perch. I catch them from the waters I fish and use them the same day. PArt of the day out for me. I believe that to ban the use of fish livebaits would be a very bad thing. Fish livebaits first, them perhaps worms (earth and saltwater) and maggots?

Thanks Willliams for bringing such bad publicity to the sport and perhaps even putting the future of this great sport of ours under more pressure. I certainly will never buy another copy the Angler's Mail or Masterline product.

  16. There is a 2 page interview with Nige Williams in AT today, I haven't read it all the way through yet, but one thing strikes me. He said he was "grassed up" and that he considers this to be "worse than the offence I committed. I would never, ever do that."

Well, I think it sums his attitude up entirely. He admits making a mistake. Whatever he says, he obviously doesn't think that the offence is too bad.

Well Nige, I've grassed you up as well now mate. I am glad the last few month's have been the worst of your life - you deserve it and a lot more than you appear to be getting.

Yes, his car should have been impounded and turned into scrap metal. He should now be in prison.

  17. I know the reels you refer to Newt. I have one on a crank handled bait caster rod, it has a button on the back for releasing the line when casting single handed. As you say fished on top of the rod.

....................... the Amazon. At present am working through Fishbase to confirm the IDs of some of the strange fish we caught down there.

Will post an account of our Amazon adventures in a day or so.

I'll look forward to seeing some of those pictures vagabond.

  18. From what I heard the courts haven't even recovered all the costs involved in prosecuting him. It is a joke.

I know from an e-mail received from Keith Arthur that he will not be invited back onto Tight Line. The producer of the programme wanted him but Keith said he wouldn't have him on. They got Gord Burton instead.
