Ok......
I'm aiming to catch pike into the mid/high doubles (maybe the possibility of the odd 20) using plugs, spoons, spinner baits etc on "medium" sized rivers such as the Ouse.
I doubt I will be fishing from a boat, since I dont have access to one lol
From what Ive seen rod wise, I would like idealy an 7-8ft rod with a short ish handle and trigger grip. I tried an american style bait caster with the one handed grip but could'nt get comfy with it at all. I really dont know about lure size or weights.
I looked at the Fox range and got very confused, whats the difference between a Spinning rod, Jerk bait rod and Lure rod??

I found the Abu online, I have to say it does look the business, and from what Ive read its pretty much bomb proof.
So that would be an ideal multiplier for me, but what do you think of the rod folks?

I like the look of that multiplyer, good value even if it dies after a seaon or two.
Ive been looking at the Greys Prodigy baitcaster 7ft 25-75g rating, would that be ok for UK course and light shore work? "Designed for multiplyer use bass style......for all light to mid range predator fish"
p.s is the abu 5501 avaliable in left hand wind?

Hi all, hope everyone is doing well
I'm itching to get into lure fishing, but I have no idea what type of rods to be looking at; i.e casting weights, lengths etc.
I dont mind using a longer rod of maybe 8-9ft ( i think I would prefer a longer rod) but what casting weight range should I be looking at for general lure fishing?
Also, can ayone recommend a good but sensibly priced multiplier for lure fishing?
As you can see Im a tad lost lol, so any help will be greatfully recieved

as previously said, the dirt from mole hills works well, dont see any reason why you couldnt use a lil bit of compost either.
buy some "mole smokes" to get rid of them, or a .50cal browning lol

Ive recently had good success using a roving approach but using a big heavily shotted "chubber" float, fished top and bottom with large bunches of maggots/worm and bread.
Id not really used a stick float before, certainly not one as large as I have been, but it's enabled me to trot big baits long distances and cover alot of water.

It also depends of the nature of the blank, some rods have an understated test cuve and vice versa.
If you're looking to buy a rod, I would recommend that you decide on the type of action that you need or prefer, and then think about testcurves.

The Normark is lovely to hold, Ive no idea of the actual weight but it felt perfect when I played with it in the shop.
I havent used a "match rod" for ages, they are so slim thesedays its scary lol

Then the same could be said for the oils found in the deadbait it'self........and Im sure none of us would say they were unimportant.
I was plagued by jacks on the one occasion I used extra oils, Im not sure whether it was due to the extra oil content or just due to the number of jack pike in the stretch of water however.

I do like Shimano's, I've just had a bad run with this reel.
I think its the clutch knob design thats the bad part. There is sweet FA holding the clutch knob on, be gentle with it and you should be fine.
Mine broke when I tried to tighten it right up to pull from a weed bed.
Having said that, I managed to fix it again last night lol, so I may give it one last chance.

Hi all,
I've given up with my Shimano 4000 GTM-RA, it is constantly breaking on me (the clutch knob comes off, and then the cluth fails to work properly. Ive given up with Shimano, although my old baitrunners are still going strong.
Can someone recomend a new reel, prefereably not from the shimano range. But a similar size to the 4000 for general useage? I fish mainly for tench, barble, chub and smaller carp.

I use a 12ft fox specialist 1lb TC for most of my fishing thesedays, it has a great through action and copes very well with big fish, yet is still pleasurable with smaller fish.
Its worth a look if you dont want a broomstick of a rod.

160mph + in a Supra tubby a few years ago, it was lent to me by an ex's mum so I had to have a go lol

Ive been using a Fox Specialist twintop for the past few months and have been impressed with its action. The 1LB Tc is soft enough but has plenty of backbone to stop rampaging chub. Ive not had any problems bumping fish or hook pulls as yet.
Although I dont specificaly target perch I would recommend the rod for the task.

Thinking about it I agree, Ill give the rod a go though just to see, it bends all the way through to the handle very nicely but isnt as stiff as my JW avon quiver.
only one way to find out! lol

Does anyone here use or own a Fox Specialist 1LB Tc rod? Ive been using mine for a few months on the local chub and roach and love it.
Im considering chasing a few of the barble that lurk in the local rivers but was wondering if it was up to the job.

wow, thats for all of that info! its cleared a few things up for me
I'm struggling to to find that particular Greys rod, but I have also found a Shimano Beast master (casting/Jerking) 2.70m 15/40g or the 2.10m 20/70g version, both with trigger grips.
I think either would be suitable, matched with a 5501c3.
