  1. Well spotted Rudd :) that's the sort of little bit of info that may.....may.......come in handy, especially if you add any other clues you pick up over a few sessions.

Seeing the change in the "chop" on a lake can point you to where the 'tow ends/slows up, Even seeing where the ducks and coots,,,and especially the gulls, are sitting. I can't prove it, never having sat out there myself, but I bet those birds have sussed out where it is the most comfy place to sit :)

No reason not to think there will be some fish there as well?

  2. As a "general" rule, on a small(10acres) and with an even bottom, the tow will be very easy to read. If the wind is blowing (and it is wind that causes undertow) then any wind along LH bank, wil push water down in to the corner where it usually turns right and then disperses as it flows sideways and back up the lake. I have known a few occasions when a real strong wind is blowing where the water actually goes straight back up the LH bank...I think this has to do with the extra volume and pressure of the wind and 'tow :)

A long lake with bars running length ways (Larky 2 ) will get a strong 'tow back up between the bars, on a SW wind on that lake, it went back up in the middle channel of 3 bars. (hope that is clear) On occasions the silt being stirred up at the southern end very quickly coloured up the water where it went back up.All other winds rarely effected any 'tow simply because the shape and the bars acted to stifle it.

Sutton No2 went crazy in a SW wind, and quickly ended up wizzing round, down one bank, along the downwind end, along and the up the leeward side. I used to get a stick about 3 feet long, tie a small weight on the end, just enough to make it sit upright in the water, and chuck it in. Half an hour later it would come sailing past having done a complete circuit of the lake!

At least the tides are easier to read :)

  3. That Coot shot is excellant (the others are good as well) I have lots of Coot shots but almost none of the show the feather detail as much, probably because the feathers are more tightly bunch?

I miss the bird life now that I am beach fishing, no Robins to visit me :)

  4. Used to be one of my pet subjects, I have been saying for years, that if you can get to understand the effect of 'tow on a stillwater, you are well on your way to finding fish. I do believe that fish, especially big ones, or bream shaped ones, get moved by 'tow, unless they fight it.

I did quite a long piece on one of the Wingham threads, describing how leaves and surface dust, can end up in a certain spot, usually where the 'tow loses momentum. At the exMKF "Mill" due to the shape there were several 'tows working at once, and you could see where they met as the wave pattern changed.

    Fascinating subject...........

  5. Been using them for a year or two Steve...they are good.

Re the mishapen food, we have a "local village shop" and they sell the stuff the supermarkets don't want. Most of the time the carrots have gone soft, half the spuds are mouldy and they have even tried to sell me milk past the sell by date, (with no apology)

Needless to say, we don't shop there any more.

  8. Its got nothing to do with communism ,socialism ,democracy or any other silly name its all to do with powerfull people or institutions trying to obtain more power over other people by any means.

The commies were the "threat" when i was a kid and we still had air raid sirens being tested in the mid fifties ,are the commies a threat to the common man or was/is it just propaganda to justify diverting billions to the military ? (lots of money going to fat arms dealers with ofcourse backhanders to those that send it)

Now the "reds under the beds" are moslems and more billions being diverted to fat arms sellers.

Strangely the only real threat to the world is america ,commies are no more except china (strangely unlike russia they make us cheap stuff so seem to be good commies so overlooked)

Who has dropped nukes ,america ,who,s foreign policy is expansion and control by deceit.....america ,who controls the UN ....america (handy that for getting bad things made good) ,who tends to jump start military actions in the world.......america ,who openly threatens the world if they dont follow in americas footsteps their americas enemy .....america

So what if america bailed us out in WW2 ,it wasnt long before they were making plans to invade us ,did they jlin WW2 to help us or was it all just a bluff to control us and europe? They now have military units all over europe and missiles on every corner ,america and its deceit had done america a lot of good but at the expense of those that object who tend to die in horrible ways

Tell me honestly who has cause you most problems some moslem living up a mountain with a few goats or america telling them to do as their told or suffer the consequences and annoying them?

Whos financial meddlings and incompantancy has dropped us in the mire were now in ,moslems ? Cuba? Ali up his mountain?.....me ,you ? No its fat rich powerful people trying to get more power and they will do anything to get it

Absolute bullshit! You should be ashamed of all that claptrap Dave, thousands of American soldiers have died keeping "the west" safe. And if you can't see that "the muslims" would run all over us given the chance, then you must be blind..........you get to see enough of them in Farnham for gods sake.

  9. Lessons were there of the futility of it namely the Korean war ,same s$%t different day Commie north vs capitalist south other nations involved ...brother vs brother

A old saying comes to mind ---------dont start something you cant finnish .

My Dad fought in the Korean as did his workmate who was at the Glousters last stand at Imjim for custers last stand ,They were both national service guys thrown into hell on earth but a forgoten war coming swo quick on the heels as WW2 .

No one realy wins wars do they?? only losers ....4 VCs won in the Korean 2 in the Imjim battle ,looking at the news tonight with the breaking of the ceasefire by the North is that one about to kick off again 60 years later ,another lunatic leadert about to cause mayhem...happened before and will again...mc Arthur wanted to nuke the Chinese for gods sake...mankind is screwed not if but when/

Unfinished buisness after war /sense of injustice on one side...cause of WW2?? history about to repeat itself with Korea?? Rhetoric to war a short step face? hope not

And if it does all kick off again, should we all stand back and let some mad commie take over another country? and then another? and then us?

To me, it was all very simple..stop the march of dictatorship and communism..............thank god for the USA.

  11. Lovely day yesterday :) Put the sun blinds up in the conservatory, sat out there to tie up some rigs ready for the rays when they arrive. Sat out in the garden watching Hazel do a bit of weeding and tidying up. Dogs exhausted themselves playing hide and seek and scrapping. Chaffinch's were singing almost all day long.

Checked the Premium bonds and found we had "won" £100 (4X 25):clap:

A pretty good day all round............

  12. Over the last 50 or more years I have never seen a decent sized Roach which has been kept in a keepnet returned without at least a couple of scales missing. Rudd suffer in the same way. I spent quite a bit of time over the last few seasons chasing big roach and rudd on a predominately big carp water. The roach and rudd were absolutely mint.... never been caught before,,,,scale perfect. A couple of seasons back we had a friendly comp for the "Rudd cup" biggest over the season, and some fool, who shall be nameless, filled a keepnet (on several occasions) with these perfect fish. Needless to say, we ended up having an almighty row on the bank, and I told him he was a clown. When he went to empty his keepnet EVERY fish was missing some scales.

  13. Generic term is "Schreckstoff", here's one abstract with a proposed active agent http://www.cell.com/current-biology/abstract/S0960-9822(12)00091-7.

I always find that when wading, with fish unhooked quickly in the water and released just by turning upstream and letting them swim into the flow, you don't get any noticeable drop-off in catches. Studies suggest that stress levels of fish in keepnets remain high, whereas with careful handling and quick release they're back to normal levels pretty quickly, so I'd rather take the risk of putting them off the feed slightly than releasing a netful of easy cormorant targets several hours later.

And it doesn't end up knocking half the scales off the fish. Please don't put Roach in keepnets.

  14. Hmm - I hope they are sure he's sane, I think I'd be happier knowing he'd been put away until no longer a threat.

I would seriously doubt his sanity....no doubt that in a couple of years time, when he is released, he will probably kill some innocent girl. He really should be quietly disposed of.
