  1. Hi Norm, I've been invited down to Plymouth, sometime this summer, by a mate...to fish on Tiburon, dont have dates yet...but will let you know....fancy a space ???

I believe Tiburon has been sold to a skipper in Whitby so I don't know what boat you will be on

  2. Think you should change that to some people can catch codlings here. I think What I've caught you could count on one hand. Whereas you catch them with ease. I guess it's all about where you have confidence. Im confident of catching weed on Runswick beach.

Thats what puts me off Glenn, I hatre fishing from the beach as the weed is a pain...but the left of Runswick is a special place.

  3. Hi doc i think glenks figures maybe somewhere near i know for a fact that one of our local boats which has been fishing off the norwegian coast this summer which has had some excellent fishing and they were landing into peterhead if i am not mistaken this boat which is under 60ft in lenth can carry around 400 boxes of fish, now the 90 ft boats which will have a very much larger fish room i am sure would be able to carry between 600- 800 boxes maybe challenge would be able to clarify this as he was trawling for quite a number of years.

You hit it on the head Big Cod/GlennK

  4. 5. And what lump of rotting wood would that be then?

Is this more hidden philosophy on the subject in hand? Or do you intend to slow this debate down by constantly ridiculing the person rather than having any input on the subject. What’s your thoughts glenk? If somebody was to fall down some stares because they where steep. And there was no prior notice or sign warning that person of those steep stares would they have a case for compensation? Now if there where signs pointing out the hazard (steep stairs) encouraging the said person to show caution when going up or down the stares. The person ignores all the warnings and ends up hurting himself on the same stares that hundreds of people use every year without incident.

Now in a court of law the owner of the stares might not get off Scot free because he could of replaced the stares with some not as steep. But in his mind this would not of been reasonably practical and there for tried to solve the problem of the steep stares in a reasonably practical way.

I would like some more input here as I believe this is a very interesting subject and one that could (in the present climate) be beneficial to many and help big cod overcome his problem.

BINATONE YOU SAY YOU ARE A MAN SOUND WITH THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, WELL WHY DO YOU SPELL STAIRS INCOORECT ALL THE TIME BY SPELLING 'STARES'. ONE FOR THE BOOK I THINK!!

  6. Binatone! - atre you saying that big cod's boat is not suitable for carrying passengers.......well the authorities that pass a vessell fit to carry passengers must not think that or he wouldn't be able to take anglers would he. Also let me say this, I have sailed omn ships bigger than your small trawler that you slogg your guts out on and I can tell you this size does not mean stability!!!

Binatone, why are you telling big Cod to get a new boat and that he should get a boat suitable for anglers, I think you will find that the class of BID COD's boat is being built everyday for charter skippers around the globe, and as paul said there have been lifeboats built with the same hull of that of pauls boat, so wind your neck in Binatone....it is you that does not know the facts this time Binatone...same old, same old

  7. Not that I care much of commercial fisherman....especially MR Binatone. But does anyone else think in the same frame of mind as me that as there are being more fish farms built to produce not just cod but lots of species that are now scarce. Soon there will be so many that prices for fisherman's catches will dip as the major fish suppliers around the country will start to do the same as the supermarkets instead of using the markets will buy from the conveyor belt of the fish farms and in turn the demand for fish on the quays will go down and so then will the prices...which will of course effect the commercial sector, but hey this is ANGLERS NET, not COMMERCIAL NET.

  8. The man (corydoras) was in the merchant navy for nine years, I suppose his ground moved a bit in it’s time and therefore will have witnessed a few accidents and there corresponding investigations.

If your anglers cannot stand up with the slightest movement of the boat, then why don’t you provide them seats? Or still get a boat that is more suitable for carrying anglers and therefore reducing the possibility of accidents. This is what the MAIB will recommend if you do not take practical steps first big cod.

Signs on your boat warning anglers that there will be sudden and unpredictable movement of the boat.

An induction of some kind when they first get on board.

Why not ask MAIB for advice, these things are cheaply done and at the end of the day it may not help the man with bad sea legs from falling over, but it will help you when it

/if it ever came to you explaining what measures (that’s reasonably practical) you have put in place to try and prevent such an incident.

But did you ever here any anglers complaining about commercials when there was loads of fish to be caught on rod and line?

If recreational anglers keep judging themselves by there best intentions and then go and judge commercials by there worst deeds they are bound to cause some kind of animosity.

Yes but the facts are that fishing accross the board has been hammered. Now why are the pipelines barron in scotland now....you cannott blame the man with a rod and line.....he never went there.....so who wrecked the fishing there.......Easy answer- The trawlerman No-one can deny that and claim that there is still lots of fish up there because there isnt, and sadly this exact same thing has happened all around the country. Like every man/woman even who love fishing whether it be by trawl or line everyone knows that something needs to be done about it soon..........Maybe, as i think, it has been the trawlers that have wrecked it, but commercial fisherman slagging anglers off on here and vice versa, isnt going to solve anything....at the end of the day the future of fishing is in the governments hand because unless something is done about conservation, commercial fishing is going to happening as much as ever and black fish is going to be landed as the quotas set and the amount of money that these big boats cost to run do not balance the books, but at the end of the day it is illegal and that is whats wrong. The Government need to put their hands in their pockets as they did with the farming industry so the sea can recooperate from the devestation that it has seen since the introduction of not the trawlerman, but the VERY GREEDY TRAWLERMAN which lives today. LETS ALL BLAME TONY BLAIR!

  10. Been in Plymouth since late September and havnt found the time to do some fishing and havn't a clue really on where to try, the hoe seems quite popular and i've heard the Tamar is quite good. Any locations with a near by (cheap preferably free) car park that might be worth a try with any tips for this time of year would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum 'Drake of Plymouth'. I now live in Plymouth, however from Whitby and have not had much chance to have much of a dabble down here. However I have a few contacts from the Armed Forces Fishing team who know the area very well so may be able to help you after I have had a word with them. With the little knowledge I have of the area mate I know that there is good sport to be had.....but it depends what you want to fish for......You have not said what you are wanting to catch because with the water slowly getting warmer down here, in the the next six months the Makeral fishing should perk up and there s good sport to be had there.....But as I said I am a beginner to this area, but have fished along the Yorkshire Coast since I was a lad and so am not sure where the best spots are. However I will keep you posted.

  11. After hearing about the contraversial catches of some very large bass I whent and bough Sea Angler magerzine.

There inside is Richard Seager with a fine brace of masive bass. Also reported is an 18.1lb bass caught by one of his very happy customers.

Now I have a fairly extensive grape vine when it comes to my fishing and acording to my grape vine Richard Seager is not only a good charter skipper but is a lisenced commercial fisherman.

Can anyone verifie this?, also can anyone tell me if the anglers pay Mr Seager for the fishing trips? or more sinisterly does he keep the bass the anglers catch and sell them to earn his money?

If these fish are being sold then I feel quite strongly that Sea Angler and Boat Fishing Monthly should not print these glory photos as a matter of princable.

Sam at the end of the day Sea Angler will print anything.....as it seems that they are starting to go down the Pan....and rightly so too....All you see is advertising!!! Bring on Total Sea Fishing thats what I say, it's a much better read anyway.

  12. Must admit that I am getting a bit confused on this one now big cod? Let’s just say that we both want it to open again and leave it at that before johno pulls it down.

I've never known anyone to contradict themselves so much!!!!

Binatone the wors 'GO and see a doctor your losing your marbles' come to mind!!!!!!

  13. Big cod

To start with I believe that this thread is about alternative methods to catch cod commercially.

Not taking a few anglers to dangle there lines about a wreck? If you or your anglers loose there gear then it’s not the end of the world, now is it?

I can only apologise for being so stupid as to think that someone with all your skills would need anything more than a GPS and a sounder to go out and make a living working cod pots throughout the North Sea.

You are wasted with messing around with a few anglers when there is a whole industry just waiting for you to come along with all your skills and knowledge that you tell us you have.

I cannot understand for the life of me why boats still today pay up to £40000 to have sonar’s fitted when with a bit of skill and know how (like what you have) they would not need one.

As for you coming and showing me how to go on? I can only presume you believe your own hype.

You stick to trying to make a living doing what you do big cod, leave making a living from results of what we catch to the commercial lads.

    Stavey

I think that you have come up with a very debateable thread; I am not trying to be negative on the subject in fact just the opposite. It’s just that we (commercial fishermen) are obviously not as skilled as big cod, therefore it would take a massive investment (in my opinion) to have a serious attempt at this method of fishing.

Ps big cod maybe you should change your name from big cod to Louie Armstrong? Because you don’t half know how to blow your own horn.

Here is a question for you! JB is one of the most successful skippers along the east coast and has fished many wrecks along the east coast very successfully...without the aid of a expensive sonar. As you seem to get on with him well I think JB should voice his opinion on this matter as I think this subject was turning into an argument between yourself and BIGCOD. I think we need another opinion from another charter skipper. I am sure that he will agree with me that after being a charter skipper for so many years and all the experience that he has he can confirm to you that it takes more skill to put a boat onto a wreck on whichever part of the wreck he pleases takes much more skill tha looking at an overpriced screen...........

As for the quote from you about 'losing gear' how do you think the handful of Whitby Netting boats in years gone by hit the wrecks with such precision??? This was with the aid of a couple of things, GPS or Navstar how it was a few years ago, but more importantly knowledge and that word EXPERIENCE!!

Now you may have towed a trawl a few miles in your time....where is the skill in that my friend???

If this site is banned, where are they going to dump the waste next????

It will have to go somewhere.

I totally agree that the Bays are wonderful places I live in Plymouth and visit them quite often in the summer, It would be a great shame to see them get even more polluted, but will the government listen, afterall they have to pay to upkeep the Tamar for all the Naval and Private vessels here. I wish there was a simple answer to all of this.

  15. Good morning my old mate.

This site is turning into a slagging match isnt it!!!!

Well its all good fun I thinkm it is not as if anyone is offending their best friends or anything.

I hope the rest of you feel the same, you must read some of these posts and have a proper giggle.....lol!

  16. pork pie has worked in the past!!!!! lol

I have been on my fathers charter boat and seen a party of lads jokingly put a piece of pork pie on their hook......and you would never believe it, but they caught a codling.

Anything works if the fish are frenzy feeding, but the crisis now is that there is not enough fish to feed like that......or am I wrong??!!??
