  1. Sage and Onion where very friendly, it was almost like they where used to human contact. You could almost think that they had been taken from a farm and let loose on the island just for the show :-)

I wonder how easy it would be to take a few piglets away from a "wild" pig mother. I may not have a degree is biology but surely if their are "wild" piglets on an uninhabited island it follows their are wild adult pigs on it also. One of those would sort you out for smoked bacon for a few weeks.

Not that any one would ever think of smoking the meat, where the viewers the only people to think when the guys caught the croc that as soon as you dispatch it the meat will start to go bad in that heat. Why not try to smoke some thin cuts of it.

I Have to admit, i am enjoying watching it as they are so clueless.

  2. It depends what type of fishing I am doing and how serious I am taking it on. For a general pleasure session I will check how sharp the hook is every few fish, often if maggot fishing putting the bait on tells you it needs changing if you burst the maggot or it takes effort to hook the maggot. So on a pleasure trip I may change the hook 2 or 3 times in a day up to getting through a pack or two. If float fishing and catching easily I may leave it longer then I should but then I doubt I would be bothered if I lost the odd fish.

However, when specimen fishing I inspect the hook after ever cast and sharpen or change it for any minor issue. My opinion it's not worth putting a lot of time, effort and often money in to fishing for a few or even single bite and then take a chance on a defective hook. I don't believe that having all the best gear will improve your catches but I am sure poor hooks and line will loose you fish.

  3. I loved their shelter building skills!

That was priceless, lean a few sticks against a few others and wonder why they just fall down. The fact that they seemed surprised and defeated by it when they fell over was hilarious. I think I may well try and build a shelter next week at Wingham out of sticks without the use of any fixings or ties. I expect to stay completly warm and dry.

  4. Sorry to hear about your health and bad weather is always going to be a pain. Hopefully it will not be the end of your session fishing, as Peter suggested it may be worth taking a look at a new bed chair and restricting yourself to single nights during the warmer months if your health picks up.

i think it says a lot about the amount of traffic this section gets that I have only just seen the post. Threads in the session carp fishing forum are getting as rare as 3 lb Roach.

  5. I do enjoy these sort of shows but It beggars belief that none of them seem capabale of knocking up a crude crab/lobster pot or a 3 pronged spear for a go at the Rays, Octopus etc.

Not that you need any skill what so ever to collect those red crabs. I have never come across them in small numbers in any place I have visited, they are either not there or there are thousands of the buggers. As has already been pointed out there are on film, so it should not be hard to collect enough for food or bait.

  6. Hi Chaps,

I was also thinking it was very quiet on the forum. I do enjoy the tactic debates and build up posts/threads but have assumed that it will mainly be Wingham Fish-in veterans going this year who know the score and have honed their tactics over previous Fish-Ins.

I have ordered a pot of lobs and 2 Dendras from Steve, so sorted on that front for the Perch. For the Tench maggots will be my main bait with running maggot feeders or groundbait cage feeders. Early on in the season I find it hard to beat maggot/castor/particles for Tench on most venues.

I have struggled to find the boilies I want for the trip. So have just placed an online order for a similar type that should be ok and hoping to try out a boilie I have never used at Wingham before but which caught me numbers of Tench last year on other waters while Carp fishing :-). If it turns out the Tench do show up in numbers at night then I may well go with natural baits during the night and accept the inevitable eels that may come along.

  7. I have a brand new hardback copy of "Tinca Tinca", written by the Tenchfishers, that I can donate. A few of the chapters are by Wingham members and at least one writes about their exploits on the Coarse Lake so it seems an appropriate item for the auction.

    Steve C.

I never got around to getting a copy or borrowing one to read and so will certainly be interested in bidding.

If I don't get a place this time around as i have been lucky enough to get a place in the past, i will leave a reserve bid for the auction with Steve B if it's ok for AN members not attending to place a bid.

  8. Email sent.

As Anderoo has already pointed out, some very impressive numbers of Tench used to be caught early on a few seasons ago. All my biggest bags of Tench came when i used to fish in the spring with late April and early May being particularly good.So a good chance of a bumper session for some people.

  9. yep! lure young girlies into your office to have your wicked way with them! that's fine and dandy!

have a scuffle because your slightly **** off? BURN THE WITCH!!!

bbc double standards at their best!

This is my problem with the whole thing, over the years BBC employees have done some terrible stuff. I can not see how this went on with out some people or lots of people knowing about it but choosing to do nothing. It just smakes of the usual story of coming down hard on the easy to deal with situations to be seen as doing something but turning a blind eye to the serious and uncomfortable to deal with stuff.

  10. Can't say i have come across any unfished still waters, everything around my way that could be fished has been and if it contained anthing of note its controlled by some club or another or is private fishing. Far to many anglers in London for many places to remain untouched. Oddly most of the canals never see an angler and they may well contain some quality fish but then there are good reasons no one wants to fish them.

  11. Very nice report Anderoo and some lovely photos, sound like you had a very good season.

For me 2014/15 was a rather unremarkable season and I can't remember a season for many a year when I have fished less. The last few months i have either been in a can't be asked mood or when I have wanted to go other stuff has got in the way. When I did go most of my catches where plain average.

I did have one fish of note, a 5 1/2 lb Trout caught by accident when fishing for Grayling. A PB but now I feel so bad, it was out of season and I should not have weighed or photographed it :-)

  12. I got mine today from the PO as I had to go there anyway. (Dales as long as you have proof of purchase it doesn't matter if the actual thing turns up or not.)

Yeah, i know but I have seen people arguing with EA officials over this very point when they show their print out. There is always one jobs worth insisting they should have the real deal. Some officials just love to reinterprete the rules they way they would like them.

A few years ago it happened to me, I had a long drawn out conversation with a licence checker, I was fishing with 3 rods and had 1 licence on me the other was lost in transit. I had print outs for both with 2 seperate references and he still could not get it in to his head that I had paid for 2 licences on two orders. Even after i told him I had reported the missing one and so if he checked he would find out another was on its way.

Eventually his colleague came along, looked at the print outs and thanked me and they moved off. I knew i was in the right but its just a mild unnecessary nuisance. It's nice just to be able to say "not much" when they ask if you have caught and pass over the licences and let them move on.

Weather Loach are certainly interesting fish, not sure what species you can get hold of where you are. I am lucky that there is a big group of stores about an hours drive away that I go to for Cichlids & Catfish. They also sell a lot of rare and unusual species that includes cold water fish, the sort of stuff that you do not see in your standard aquarium or pet store.

There are a number of interesting fish that will survive in unheated tanks if you are interested in non-natives. There are a few Sunfish that come up for sale from time to time like Pumpkinseeds and Black Banded Sunfish. There is a huge range of bitterlings and small dace and minnow type fish. They do seem to be restricting a lot of cold water species but as soon as one is blocked an alternative will be imported. I have even seen some pretty awsome looking Loach in the coldwater section.

The link below shows some of the temperate fish that come up for sale at one of the aquarium shops I go to Wildwoods, it might give you an idea of what is available for those who want an unheated tank slightly different to the standard Goldfish and Carp.

  14. I rather enjoy Top Gear and don't really care if Clarkson was shouting, swearing or even hit someone during production and with the BBC's history of investigating and dealing with bad behaviour it does look like a bit of a witch hunt.

Surely their HR department must be working flat out dealing with all the sex scandal issues they have had. So no serious investigation in to Jimmy Savile but the mire hint of Clarkson doing something wrong and he faces the full force of the producers and HR. I don't seem to recall Savile being suspened pending investigation or canceling his shows mid run and no doubt those that did know what he done or helped or covered up for him are still working for the BBC or drawing pensions from them. I doubt they would need to do much digging at the BBC to uncover much worse goings on then Clarkson's hissifit over dinner. If this incident was filed in time line or seriousness of the offence then i doubt their HR team would ever get around to reviewing it.

It all sounds a little childish from Clarkson but in the scheme of things not serious enough to effect the series which should have been finished and aired and then any disciplinary action could take place.

Despite Top Gears & Clarkson's popularity I do think that sections of the BBC views it as a bit of an embarrassment. It does not really fit in with their world view and their agenda. It attracts an audience that are almost treated with contempt by some at the BBC.

I guess they will want to be seen as being tuff on Clarkson but all they will do is alienate further those that feel that the BBC panders to everyone other then your average english white guy. It's no coincidence that Borris, Farage and Clarkson are so popular. You don't even have to like what they say or do but in a world that judges everyone by a certain set of PC rules it is refreshing to come across a few who just come out and say what they are thinking. Saying that, I think all 3 know what they are doing and pre-plan what they say but it is nice to see someone express an alternative view from time to time.

  15. Site still not working this morning, very poor but I guess I should plan and buy it early as once they send out reminders the traffic shoots up and the system obviously can't handle it. I am not one to wistfully go on about how things where better in the past when it comes to fishing but I do miss not being able to buy a licence at a tackle shop or venue.

Sod the big Roach that the Coppermill at Walthamstow Reservours used to have, its being able to buy a new licence at the gate house I miss the most.

  16. I got my renewal emails the other day for my licences and this year they promised if you enter new login details you can buy 2 at once rather then the usual rubbish of doing two seperate applications. So progress of sorts i thought.

Well after not receiving either licence last year after doing seperate applications and phoning and ordering replacement twice before getting them I had hoped that maybe things would have improved. The year before last, one never turned up and required chasing and so I had a few reservations about the system but surely they can not get it wrong every year!

So after creating a new log in the other day, guess what the payment part never worked. Tried about 4 times now and this is the latest message from a few minutes ago.

Something's gone wrong with our website server – there is no problem with your computer or internet connection. We apologise for this inconvenience and are working to fix this as soon as possible.

How hard is it to get this right, ever year the online system fails spectacularly. Rather annoying when you have to buy it. If you where buying a product from an online store and the serive was so poor you could and would go some place else.
