  1. Cheers David. I kind of worried that the first paddle report might be a bit negative but like I said I think it's the paddle and getting used to a different yak more than something wrong so it's a case of watch this space - besides, an honest report helps everyone. I bought the gear to rig an anchor trolley this morning and am starting on the rigging of that and am hoping to have another paddle today. What I did miss out of the first part was the excellent rigging of this kayak - the Prowler 15 fell down in that there was little in the way of fitments to attach a decent length anchor trolley - whereas the Trident will allow, with standard fixings, an almost full length trolley, and that's what I'm doing, on both sides though like a twatt I got 4x 3.5 metre engths of cord instead of 2x 7 metre. Bah.

Won't that still work if you join the two 3.5m cords? because the trolly only runs front to back, not completely around the blocks? (can't vision it in my mind though ?) Good luck with it though Mark  I have looked at your pics about ten times now and my misses said" oh god!" when she saw me looking at it heh heh!!. I am getting to the NEED stage now ha ha

How refreshing to read a review that states a true, unbiased account of the pro's and con's of a new product!

It must be tempting to write a "rose tinted" review of something when we have spent our hard earned cash on it!. Nice one Mark  I like the look of the Trident and it may be my next purchase yak. Thanks for producing a review that is trustworthy!!

p.s. That's got to be the cutest "model" ever to have appeared with a kayak!

  3. Hi Bill  They are both fine as are the rest of that fine family :clap2: Wish I could have got over last week as we intended but our house sitter couldn't make it (not complaining though as they have been fantastic looking after our critters over the years so we owe em big!) We will be back again in June unless we squeeze in a flight again like a previous Novenber!.

Know what you mean about the summer, or lack of! Surely next year we are due a good un??????

    All the best mate

  4. 0.75 with some chain and plenty of line should suffice - it held me on Sunday in a 3ft swell and 16mph wind with current in the same direction.

If you stop eating as much seafood then the wind should dissipate Mark!

I've never been out in/on a kayak, but there is an old saw that harks back to the days of sail, "When is the best time to reef (shorten) sail?" the answer is "When you first think about it." I'd SUGGEST that when out in a 'yak the best time to head for shore is the first time the thought runs through your mind.

Just my two bits worth, your mileage may vary.

Fair do's corydoras a good suggestion and indeed exactly what I did  especially with our weather lately! I think the weather people are stumped by it all! The shipping f/cast for the day was flat calm!

  6. Hi Martin.

As you say the converted, but the occasional reminder dosnt hurt.

There are lots of us now with time in the saddle, but we are still getting new people here on Anglers Net, its good for them to see posts like SDDs,........ reality check and all that. :boat:

Nice post Dave........did the pants wash out ok :P:D:D

Hey Yakitty! I think I may have dramatised it a bit there Bill, in no way I was in any danger! I was just posting for the record, as the sea can turn on a sixpence and catch out the experienced as well as the newcomer! This is why I made the point that I turn back at the first signs and don't hang on for them "extra few minutes" Cheers Bill :)

  7. That's why I bang on at you guys from time to time to treat the sea with respect. The ocean makes an exiting mistress, but one with no thought, care or respect for human life.

Who the hell are you? and go and bang on somewhere else!

  8. Whoa!! What a trip I just had  I set off around 10~ish for a quick bait bash (to get some maccies for Pike fishing!) and it was flat calm when I set off!. I had met a guy I see a lot in a small green 12ft boat on the shore while I was checking out the conditions. There was NO wind and the sea was almost flat except for a gentle swell.

I set off and it was great, small swell and no wind. On the way out to my mark (1.5 miles max) I went over a huge bait fish ball on the finder so I stopped and dropped feathers among em! I was there no more than 5 minutes when the swell suddenly started getting quite a bit bigger and I decided to stay where I was. The guy in the small boat was further and saw me and came over. He said "where did this wind come from" and said it was really blowing just a little further out. As we talked, literally 5 minutes the waves had become huge and I scuttled back in and landed in huge surf! (without spilling luckilly!) Just goes to show, it was flat calm to very choppy really in only 10 minutes!! Scarey stuff!

  9. I agree. Missed you Bill.

There are many things we have to do in life and we can't do them all. So we may as well get the yak out and go fishing instead.

    Hi Mark

I managed to get another day pike fishing on Coniston the other day ~ Excellent!!! didn't get them to the boat but had a great fight with one! Unknown size but jeeze did it wriggle ha ha! and another bit the back end off my mackerel! Still amazes me that they take maccies that size (6-8 inch)

I had a shed load of fun in the marina there, behind the boats and near some reeds. I could see a mass of perch below me in 12ft of water and they were dashiing around grabbing minnows that passed by and were totally unphased by my presence!! I dangled a 6" rubber lure (the type with the really wriggly tails) and they were attacking it like mad, grabbing it by the tail but not enough to hook em because the lure was so large! although I did hook one large one and got it to the boat, unhooked it ready for a pic and the git flipped straight back into the water ha ha! FANTASTIC fun and I will be going back soooooon for another go with bait and smaller lures

    Superb fun!

  10. Hey Bill  Me and Prowler were talking about you in Jersey in June, we reckoned you had been abducted by aliens ha ha good to see you are still getting back out on the yak, same thing with me really, apart from my last Jersey trip I have been out no more than 6 times (NOT a lot for me!) but am hoping for a indian summer (yeah right!!) Also been doing some pike fishing and have got into it a bit. Ideal when you cant get out on the sea and the buggers fight like Marlin ha ha especially as the lakes are all on my doorstep

Good to see ya mate :clap2:

  11. Hi Mark.

Thanks for the offer and invite matey.

There is far too much happening this end at the momment.

Ive been out in the Yak 3 times this YEAR, and been out with the fly gear twice.

    Stuff this working lark

Wish you well with the meet, hope the weather is kind, and you have a good turn out.

    Bill.

  12. Welcome. P13's are very popular, and the Tarpons are very well made good yaks, Liquid logic manta rays are getting rave reviews too, they are all stable, but the longer they are helps with tracking and helps out at sea, but then there is a trade off with portability and storage, so...

see as many as you can, try as many as you can, and get the one you like the most, that suits you the best, cos you are the one who will have to use it. Go to a meet, and if you can't do manage that, hire some. You've gotta be comfy. Search these threads, there is an abundance of valuable info in there cos this topic has been covered many times before.

    Perfect answer

Not too much of a problem if you do get the wrong one as the yaks are known for holding their money and it would be snapped up on here I am sure, as long as you havn't drilled too many holes in it first thing ha ha! I have a scupper pro which is perfect for me as I like a nice tight fit around the hips for control over the kayak as I do a bit of long distance too!. The P13 is probably the ideal yak (IMO) for yak fishing and the figures speak for thenselves, but I suppose most kayaks of that length and beam will be similar in the conditions you mention  HOWEVER! you WILL venture out "to that little rock" or over to that "boil of baitfish" when you realise how stable and easy to paddle these things are! so getting a short kayak (less than 10 foot) is going to be harder to paddle longer distances but stable enough to have a picnic on ha ha..........Basically.........get a P13

  13. Hi SDD ..

Pond has a waterfall, and a side pump blasting in oxygenated water .. and masses of surface area. Can't see oxygen loss being a problem.

Just had a walk around the pond edges, and spotted masses of small fry in there.

So .. I have tiny fish, and mid-size fish, but all my big ones have rolled over !!:unsure:

    Bl**dy Odd !! :wallbash::wallbash:

Bloomin mystery that one mate :( I hope you find the problem or it simply doesn't happen again!

    Best of luck

    SDD~~~~~ :sun:

  14. Nope ... All well established ...

    Hi there

I had a similar problem a few years ago and a friend told me it happened to him during "stormy" weather and suggested this sucked oxygen out of the water, killing fish that needed high oxygen levels (carp, koy etc) I added an oxygenator pump and stones (outdoor type) and never had a problem since!. Worth a try as they are inexpensive on the ol ebay (£10 ish).

    Good luck mate

  15. I am considering upgrading my paddle.

For six months I have been muddling through with a Decathlon special at £25, having been purchased when I knew no better.

I am thinking about a low end carbon shafted paddle max £150.

    I am 6ft and have a P13.

Most of my time is spent on rivers but I get about 4 weeks a year by the sea. From research here and elsewhere it seems as if you guys like the N12 lendal kinetic.

Checking their web site it looks as if the model I should look for is the N12 Lendal Kinetic Explorer Plus. Is this the right one?

I am leaning towards a 220cm version, again is this about right for my height and kayak?

I know this subject has been done to death already but £130ish is a considered purchase for me and I would appreciate the opinion of more experienced paddlers before I part with my hard on dosh.

You can always take it back if you are not happy with it! the sale of goods act allows for this and to be honest any "good" seller will not risk your future purchases by saying "sorry no returns" I think those days are gone now with so much competition being available!. Ask at where you are going to buy from (even on line) and I am sure you will get this answer.

Lighter paddles definitely DO make a diference! I had a lovely wooden paddle (still have it) and it is a beautiful paddle but I wouldn't switch back to it after a lighter one!. Mine is aluminium shaft and poly blades but decent quality. For me carbon is for "racers" and I can't really see the point for fishing uses, maybe very long tours but thats about it. I think a lot of it is "mine is carbon" syndrome and if that appeals to you then fair do's.

Good luck mate, all the best.........Dave

  16. Any more to add to this section, anyone?

    http://www.ratemyfish.co.uk/showgallery.php/cat/504

I'm trying to get a few in it from members here before 'announcing' it to our mailing lists.

Just added a few more (not great but a start!) and I reckon its a good way of adding pics for folks to view, i.e. mention on this forum that you are going to post on the "ratemyfish" / sea kayaking gallery for any folk here who want to have a look, because on this gallery you can click the image and see the high res version rather than the scaled down pics available on here! just a thought?. How about making the link a sticky post job Elton?.

  18. I want to buy a kayak for fishing on lake windermere and i am not sure which will be the safest. I have a fishing boat on there and know how choppy it can get when boats go past even when its calm weather. I have been looking at a BIC Bilbao, is it any good and relatively safe ? I would appreciate any advice as i am totally clueless! Also anyone who would like a newbie tagging along from time to time to gain some experience, cheers.

Hi there shazza1971 and welcome

I kayak windermere and Coniston regularly! if you have ever seen a red / yellow sunset scupper pro ambling around mindlessly then thats me

I use my scupper pro because it is the kayak I use for the sea so will handle any rough stuff, but most kayaks will fit the profile on the lakes

I have just started pike fishing and find it SUPERB! If you want to tag along sometime you are more than welcome (you are welcome to try out my kayak) You will not be able to use pvt messaging until you have 15 or so posts under your belt so keep posting questions and chat away!. I am on hols early September and intend to do a fair bit on the lakes so I will post up on here when I intend to go (a few days notice or so).

Although I have kayak fished a lot, fishing these big puddles is relatively new to me but am getting the hang of it thanks to the kind folks on here helping, so feel free to ask away and I am sure people will answer or point you to the right threads on here if it has been covered before. You can also use the search function to look specifically at a certain topic.

If you read down the threads to "Nifty does it backwards" you will see my kayak on Coniston with my first pike! (ever so proud!!)

All the best and welcome to this fine forum

  19. Do they ever throw the book at anyone except motorists?? Royal Show week here two lads made an anonomous call stating someone had fallen in the River Wye. 2 helicopters and major search revealed nothing. Call was traced - resuly £80 fine!!

    Hiya Martin

So true! Yet, do 35 in a 30mph and the "law" suddenly becomes interested (for law, read "tax office" extension!)

  20. JT, Dave kindly gave me something for you, any chance you could PM me or email me your address so I can either pop it around or we could meet up?

I hope keeping well, have you manged to get out at all?

Woooooop wooooooop Captains on the bridge, surface das boot  Hiya bud!

Huh that little trickle of a tide didn't worry me much :help: I was only letting you go first because I was lost :whistling:

Whats the news on the missing couple? Hope the whole thing was not a ruse, wasting the rescue services time? They should throw the book at em if so

Great to hear you got that young man yak fishing bud! I hope he doesn't think he is gonna learn anything from me and you? ha ha.

  21. I liked that photo you posted. It's surprising to me that nearly all kayak-caught fish I've seen in the UK have been sea fish, so it's nice to see a pike make an appearance.

I think this is down to the fact that a lot of UK lakes and canals do not allow kayaks! The lakes where I live are the large ones in the "lake district" which are seen more as a national asset as opposed to smaller lakes and rivers etc!. The US have it spot on with access being a right to such areas. The UK has a history of keeping hunting / fishing areas private for the wealthy! My pet hate!! :yucky:

Being my first real pike, I was delighted with my catch (had a small jack pike before that one) and the misses is now cursing Nifty for opening my eyes into a whole new area of equipment that I "need" ha ha  Cheers Nifty  I am on leave for the first week and a half of September so if the weather gods allow, I will be out doing a lot more yeaaaaaaaaaaah!!

    Dave :sun:
