They don't want it either, but threatening the EU with no deal always reminds me of this scene.

Cameron could say what he wanted, if those people had voted no, he would not have got it. Every one of them owns Brexit just as much as Cameron does.Yes you could say exactly the same about the Iraq war they all voted for it but Cameron was the one who instigated Brexit then ran away like a coward Farage did the same ran over to the states hoping for gold and glory and got sent home packing with his tail between his legs ,

The following all voted in favour of the European Union Referendum Bill in the House of Commons at 12:35 pm on 9th June 2015, and are all equally culpable with Cameron.he is to blame for this mess him alone

Yes, there is a real problem with educational attainment amongst boys, especially working class boys, especially white working class boys. This needs to be taken seriously, and dealt with.
-
I'm still pretty goddam privileged, Ken. I guess if I did get equality imposed on me, it would feel a lot like oppression. I'm not worried it's going to happen soon.
I'm well aware of what's going on (mostly) in the US, and of the people who have made a career out of complaining about it (and in the case of Alex Jones and his fellow travellers, lying about it). I think Brits complaining about it have a lot in common with my friend who is always posting memes about racial oppression from US sources. We don't have the same degree of historical and current oppression, and we don't have the same degree of backlash. We don't have the pernicious racism of the US, though we have more than enough, and apart from a few silly NUS snowflakes we don't have the same degree of reaction to it.

The combination of economic depression and populists using nationalism and the stirring up of people's basest emotions against out-groups in society to offer simplistic solutions to complex problems fits well. We don't have a massively technologically superior society turning up and colonising us.I'm surprised that the situation is being likened to Nazi Germany and the persecution of the Jews.
How about a situation where the indigenous peoples were overcome by the mass influx of immigrants, i.e. USA, and Australia? It didn't turn out too well for the locals when different cultures, religion, and lifestyles, were imposed on them.
I watched an interesting set of documentaries on the Holocaust recently, and the most chilling thing was the realisation that the people enabling and committing atrocities were not coerced. They believed the propaganda. They believed that their hatred against fellow human beings was justified. They were just ordinary human beings.
If it happened again, I am quite certain that people we each know would collaborate, in the sincere belief that they were doing the right thing.
Fomenting hatred is a dangerous game.

Same as Jim's - walking and quacking. The extreme nationalism and scapegoating minorities are the worrying behaviours for me.Yes, there was a lot of it about and often it was even codified into hateful works of "philosophy":
Where is your evidence that Salvini, Orban etc are fascists?
-
There's nothing remotely authoritarian about any of the parties or people I listed,so as is so often the case "fascists" just seems to be a synonym for "people I don't agree with".
Far right, ultra-nationalists busy scapegoating minorities for the nation's ills in hard times. We've seen it before, Ken, and it didn't end well. It's happening across Europe, as it did in the 30's.There's nothing remotely authoritarian about any of the parties or people I listed,so as is so often the case "fascists" just seems to be a synonym for "people I don't agree with".
-
Not really. Godwin's Law refers to the accusation of being just like Hitler when discussing people who are not like Hitler. We're talking about fascists here, they don't get to disown their crimes so easily.Reductio ad Hitlerum.

In my opinion, the most damaging and dangerous effect of the illegal migration crisis is the oxygen it gives to groups like Lega Nord. Has Europe forgotten what happened last time it indulged their sort?

Winning hearts and minds there.

I think that is what I was thinking of too. Campden tabs not Milton tabs.
Have to be a bit careful with them, the SO2 they give off (especially when you add citric acid) is quite dangerous around asthmatics.
-
I don't think I'd go as far as banning art because of the crimes of the artist, but I could understand if individual radio stations decided that it was in poor taste to play MJ, Glitter, Harris, etc. Depends how strict you want to be with it, though, we could lose a lot of music! Wyman, Bowie, etc. Lots of other dubious artists beyond kiddie fiddling too, Wagner is a bit controversial. The BBC can easily stop playing music by paedophiles, but they might need to get the hammer and chisel to Broadcasting House if they want to remove the work of massive pervert and abuser of his own daughters Eric Gill.
Mind you, we all probably have one of Gill's fonts installed. -
I have made home brew on and off for the last 30 years or so, but never used Milton. I used to use Campden tablets (sodium metabisulphite) and citric acid for sterilising. More recently I have used cleaner/steriliser which is chlorine based, just using the tablets to stabilise.
-
If you google the msds, Milton is certainly chlorine based now. How long it has been, I know not.
-
Starstruck, I guess. And maybe a bit greedy. He pretty much groomed the entire families. Extravagant gifts, travel, top hotels, the best of everything. Perhaps only saw what they wanted to see. Didn't want to see what they were trading for it.
- 1
-
Well, perhaps if they start organising field trips to Pride (or to titty bars for that matter) that would be the time to rein it in. For now, I'm going to stick to my original position that these objecting parents are religiously inspired homophobes.

Having just watched the first part - I completely believe the alleged victims.
-
I do not have a problem with gay people, but please let's not confuse telling kids about gay people with possibly promoting it??!
That confusion appears to be the reason people have a problem with it. You cannot promote it. People are or are not, it is not something they choose. May as well say we promote left handedness by telling them there is nothing wrong with it.
-
That is a bit of whataboutery - yeah, some feminists have a problem with Snow White and consent. They should probably lighten up.
I still dont see what harm is going to come from children knowing as much about gay people as they know about straight people - i.e some people love each other. Nothing about sex. Do you have a problem with gay people?
-
So a childrens story with a bride and groom meeting, marrying and kissing would be sex education and presumably something youd want to ban from primary schools?
-
Who is talking about sex, Ken? Is talking about marriage and parents sex education?
-
No - but there's more to citizenship and society than sexuality and when those very same primary schools steer clear of describing heteronormative family groups where daddy is around (or even making father's day cards as a class activity) because so many of the kids present have single mothers, it strikes me as bizarre for them to go out of their way to normalise gay relationships.
Those books on different types of families describe two parent heterosexual families too.
I know gay people. They're normal. Why wouldn't you want people to think they are normal? None of this seems like a big deal to me.
- 1
-
I dont think the two are mutually exclusive.
Is it fair to say that you dont think primary schools should teach anything about citizenship or society, just the 3 Rs?
E U. Should we stay or should we leave.

The only way to resolve this is to put it to the people again, in my opinion. Parliament can't decide. No Deal means economic collapse. Any deal the EU will sign up to means we become rule-takers and financial contributors with no say on the rules. If we want a better deal than we've got (while still getting no say) we have to compromise on the very things like freedom of movement that people voted leave to escape. We know what we're getting now. If we still want it, fine.
