  1. Hey Stan you gonna start making carrot rods now.Got to go with the times mate

I would if I could afford it John, capital is all used up on 140 ton of turnips I`m using to try and develop a new drag system for Penn Internationals, just as likely a scenario as that load of tosh. Sinclair C5 races to mind. <_< <_<

  2. I don't know where you get the idea that the wild stock is depleted. :schmoll:

On my rambles I am almost tripping over them. There are probably more wild haggis now than at any time in the not too distant past.

This may be due to the current fashion for catch and release of the new generation of Haggis Hunters. Most of the illegal trapping you refer to is carried out by "visitors" from the east, some from as far afield as Aberdeen, or so I've heard. Shouldn't blame them though, it's been a tradition there for many generations, it's just a matter of education :wallbash:

If people didn't insist on taking "one for the pot" and just kept it to once a year there would be no need for farms blighting the glorious Scottish countryside (Thinks ! mebbes we could get them farmed in Turkey, and let them put up with the pollution )

I did mention in the thread that the info on depleted wild stocks was straight from the Shanter report. Thomas Shanter the author has made a long and in depth study of the matter. You may well remember that he also carried out the 1970` studies into wild

tumshie, and stovie stocks, much the same was said as you have detailed above at that time, no attention was paid and now the stocks are all but non existent in the wild. :schmoll: :schmoll: :schmoll:

  3. Never fails, as soon as some enterprising person discovers a cost effective way of producing farmed produce that could help in sustaining what is quickly becoming a depleted wild stock, someone complains about the "damage to the environment caused by the farms". <_<

What about the (albeit not many) jobs these farms create in rural areas. The advent of the few (I believe 9 ) of these farms in the remote areas of Sutherland can cause little damage to an area that offers little else but scenery (certainly magnificent) but much of it incapable of being appreciated due to the lack of passable roads. At least the few farms have allowed access to certain new areas for tourism by virtue of the additional roads required to locate them close to the sconsie marshes.

The Shanter report clearly outlined the decline in wild stocks, mainly due to illegal trapping and the lack of policing of the wild sconsie marshes. The introduction of such a small number of farms must be given a chance or the wild stocks will decline in much the same way as the leeries did in the late 50s and early 60`s or the now long gone Keltie of the Soule Skerrie.

  6. Neil, and just the strange way things work out, about an hour after I put that post up this morning who phoned me but Bert Sinclair. Read your post out to him and that started him on the stories :D Sadly he told me that a couple of the guys you named are no longer with us :( :(

  7. hi snatcher yeah i have raised this topic before with you ,i hope to get down at the start of the summer season well march actually and start sea angling again ,its been a long while since i wet a line (im a piker now) i have been down a couple of times over the winter just for a visit, the mull club was set up mainly for tope fishing on a catch and release system, and we had about six outings per year plus an open day ,i think in october, at night after fishing the open day we had a buffet and prize giving in the ship, sometimes we would fish port logan or auchen malg never had much success up there ,my memory is fading about catches but to be honest we did blank a lot, maybe that was the hangover from davys hospitality at the ship, i can put some names on but i dont think you will recognise them,me neil lindsay, jimmy bone, davy powell ,jim mclanaghan, john scott, davy welsh, marcel wittebolle the list goes on we were all members of other sea angling clubs ,and individual members of s.f.s.a and e,f.s.a and some of us me included fished at international level,i fished the european tope festival held in tenby where i blanked,,,,so hopefully will get my piking bivvy out and camp down at east tarbert in the not to distant future maybe see you there i have still got the club badge regards neil

Memories indeed Neil. John Scott does`nt fish now but Jim McLanaghan and Bert Sinclair are fishing away. You`ve got the MOGBGC badge, I`ve got all your old club cups & shields lying 6ft away from me at this minute, inherited them for another club. :) :)

  8. Would that apply to female Swedish nyphomaniacs, if I knocked on their doors? :D

Not too sure on that one Elton but I`ve heard it works with female Russian weightlifters, then again so would a can of Pal

  9. LOL No idea what that means (and nor did Google), but Happy New Year :D

To enlighten both yourself and Google what Norrie said was that you have the nature and general appeal that should you approach any strangers door at random they would take to you immediately and give you a piece (sandwich). In other words they would take pity on the poor waif and give him what they had.

  10. Fishfinder, not all say its essential. I`ve got over 50 fly rods in the lists and not one of them "specialist" (or claimed as the best). Any fly rod will do for pike as long as its capable of handling the size and weight of fly / lure you intend to use without undue stress on the rod and have the ability to cast that fly / lure and obviously handle the size of fish you make come against. No point in using a 6ft 3 weight fly rod to cast large pike lures it wont work (well it will but not very well).

A reasonable average would be 9-10ft in the 7# to 9/10# ranges. Action is up to the individual but not too sloppy.

As Tony U says on the saltwater side then they do become specialist, mainly because of the components having to be saltwater resistant and in the heavier ranges 15 / 16 / 18 # for heavy billfish etc then the blanks are designed for that purpose.

  11. Juankerr, (love the nickname, very subtle)

Had plenty of them on fly but not local, in Portugal. The barragems (reservoirs) over there are teeming with carp. Its all sight fishing because there are shoals of anything from 4-6 fish up to several dozen all surface or just sub-surface cruising.

Last April I had about 14 during a 4 hour session and lost another half dozen or so. I was using a 10ft 8/9 tip action rod, full floating line with clear bonefish tip section to 6lb tippet. Most of them fell to slow sinking buzzers normally within a few seconds of the cast but also had a few on small midge flies. Did`nt have a great selection of flies with me.

The fish were not huge but averaged around the 3-5lb mark with one running about 8 - 9lb. Saw quite a few larger ones, doubles but for whatever reason they were not interested or not fast enough to beat the smaller fish to the lure.

Even at these small weights they were powerful and could take 30-40 yds backing at a run.

    Stan.

  12. Andrew, cant help you a lot on suppliers but I`ve made couple of large diameter drop nets over the years from exactly what you say, a bike wheel. Only very minor problem was making sure when the spokes were unscrewed no ragged bits were left sticking out (small bits). I eventually covered the outside of the wheel rim, to be more exact the groove where the tyre sat, with "acorn" central heating piping 10mm ( I think). I wrapped it on with thread and epoxy but gas / gaffer tape would do the same.

    :)

    Stan.

  13. Like many others I never met Gerry but enjoyed his informative posts. The posts from those who had met him are more than sufficient to tell me what a gent he was, a sad loss to his family and friends as well as the forum and angling.

  14. Before it goes on e bay might as well post here first.

A 9ft, 6#, Hardy Jet fly rod, in really good condition with original Hardy cloth bag. Mid to tip action, very lightweight. Original goldenrod wrap with ruby trim bands and original label, (label not scuffed).

£60.00 plus carriage (£8.00). Have photos.

  15. OK I`ve made up some photos, stuck them through photoshop, all max size 640 x summat so what next??? :(:( Aint got a scooby how to stick them up, not sure how much use they will be as I aint no David Baillie

  16. Elton, perfectly happy to give a guide on re-ringing [no pun intended] ( hate that term rings, they aint rings they are guides, they guide the line along the blank and Aftco rollers certainly aint rings,,,,,,, anyway rant over.)

Probably better with a few pics but no idea how to do that so PM me with advice.

    Stan :)
