  1. Unless somebody has changed things recently, then historically it has always been 9 inches. I think that was under the salmon & freshwater fisheries act. Then again someone could have had a bright idea and its now something like 225.6789 mm, 9 inches works for me, (as the actress said to the bishop)
  2. Depends whereabouts they are coming Elton and what they want to fish for, hundreds of venues, wild to stockie, river to loch, salmon, trout, sea trout, char??????????? If they give a hint if they are touring or whatever we can give them loads of info. That time of year the grilse runs are starting on a lot of rivers.
  3. Ken, as Guy mentioned, the heavier dacrons are good for wind on leaders. www.kiteworks.co.uk/Lines.shtml
  4. I`m running a 4 x 4 just now and will continue to do so with glee. My only regret is that I aint got the cash to by a Humby or similar or the biggest gas guzzler I could find. Being self employed it aint any problem to claw back the extra road tax from the government but ten fold for their audacity and discrimination. I`m all in favour of being environmentally friendly (to a degree) but I dig my heels in hard when I`m dictated to by some carrot munching, lettuce nibbling hippies who are more worried about what happens 50 or 100 years from now than they are about the present day. I`d love to see some figures on how much atmospheric pollution it takes 4 x 4 users and other gas guzzlers and of course planes etc all lumped together for a year in comparison to what old mother nature can do in 5 minutes with, for example Mt St Helens. The worlds been getting warmer and colder for millions of years and will continue to do so as long as it exists. I`m quite sure I`ll have enough problems to worry about in the next few days with run of the mill life without getting overly up tight about what my great great grand kids may have to deal with. Trust I`ll also now see all the politicians running around in Puntos and Fiestas instead of jags and mercs, stuff the lot of them. Only a few years back it was cows farting that was damaging the ozone layer with their methane gas, (or was that Norrie ) pleeeeeeease.
  5. Nice one Davy  Amazing job in the photo, you`ve got it looking exactly like the Karen
  6. Got the 11# last September, rated as 300 x 30lb backing. I used a 300yd spool but had a fair bit left over on the spool, reckon I got around 230-250 max on with a 9# line. Having said that could probably have got 400-500 yds of 30-40lb braid. Good enough reel with a smooth clutch (at the moment) see what happens in a few months.
  7. --> QUOTE(Norm B @ Feb 24 2007, 02:54 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Where, how much, anything elseI need to know, like, can I come please. Mibbes, PM me 1 place left.
  8. --> QUOTE(Norm B @ Feb 24 2007, 01:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Must be even closer to Hampshire then, when are we going to do a tackle test? Dont know about you Norm, but I`m doing a tackle test 10th - 16th Sept inclusive
  9. I`ve never fished Mauritius Norm but my buddy goes (or did go) twice a year for the past 10-12 years normally 5 days on the boat. His catches have gone from 5 or 6 good marlin boated for the week to his last trip, one hooked and lost and not another seen. He`s even paid the crew to return fish before now. Doubt if he is going back, Bob & Tony have more blues than Mauritius nowadays and whites like mackeral shoals attacking lures and they are all catch and release. That`ll do me fine and only 3hr flight away from sconnie botland.
  10. Norm, know fine well that happens, possibly why Mauritius is going down the tubes. Simple from my point of view I just avoid areas like that and fish T & R boats / areas.
  11. Ian, know all that fine well mate, doubt if anyone will put pen to paper. I had never met this angler before, I had heard it was going on but what can you do??? The angler was perfectly innocent about it and worked on the basis that he spent several hundred pounds on the trip overall so it was a way to recover costs. I did actually try to explain to him that it was also a perfect way to f=== his future sport up as well but £`ssss speak louder apparently. Not quite sure how many fish I`d need to sell to cover 2 or 3 overseas trips a year. I, in my naive way, just assumed that the overall cost of my trip was the price I paid for enjoying my sport, now and in the future. <_<
  12. Norrie, built a rod recently for someone who fishes there a few times each year. He tells me that certain "skipper" up there sells them and splits the "booty" with the "anglers" to keep the costs down. Every one caught is certain to be killed. Good way to protect your business eh??? decimate the product. Sooner Davy (sandtiger) gets his new boat going the better. You would think the "skipper" concerned would know what a record porbeagle looked like <_<
  13. Can confirm Chesters that Norries regulations are indeed flexible (cost you a pint `though)
  14. Signed, what next, cut back on pedestrian crossings because they use too much electricity?? Little grey men, in little grey suits in little grey offices doing pathetic little grey jobs with no purpose and no contribution to the country, the civil servants that is, not the RAF
  15. As they say excrement does happen. Building four rods for a client just now and only noticed after the first one went into the dryer that I mis-read my own job sheet. Put a lightweight black anodised aluminium reel seat on the rod when it should have been silver <_< Before it goes on E Bay might as well give you guys the option. Its brand new (newer than that it aint even dried yet) can send a photo next day or so. 8ft, in 7 sections, travel rod. Its on a black Orvis blank, cast 3 - 4#. AAA Portuguese cork grip, lightweight black aluminium reel seat  Blanks sections are 15 inches in length. English pattern snakes wrapped in gunsmoke thread with stand-off stripper. As its one of my own brand it carries a guarantee in normal use without limit of time, (excludes accidental damage or fair wear and tear). Finished rod weighs in at around 100grms (3.5 oz) You can get an idea of the build here www.alba-rods.co.uk. Will let it go for £95.00 (ovno) inc. carriage UK mainland. (that`s the blank price trade) Bummer, retails closer to £200.00. Need new glasses.

    Billfish

As Davy says, not all that unusual. If you go back to angling books of the 30`s to 50`s broadbill were simply classed along with all the other indigenous UK species and no big deal made of it. Marlin on the other hand h`mmm 24 degrees and up, out of our reach I reckon at the moment. If we all buy 4 x 4`s mind you we could accelerate the global warming and improve the fishing
  17. Yep, like to see that John. You can do all sorts of inserts and designs if you`ve got the patience and decent cutting gear. These were just plain powder blue to go on a blue trolling 20lb with silver / blue Batson butts and CWDSG fujis. Good job the customers a fishing buddy, god knows what the thread wrap will be, he`s offshore just now. Lemon or pink knowing him, he spotted rod builder.org once and that was it. Yellow checked jacket and blue trousers for the golf next with pink shirt and tartan cap no doubt. :yucky: (sorry Newt but they can be a tad gaudy in the "inner temple" )
  18. Yep, I was only jokin`. Er indoors has been clearing cupboards and every ten minutes it`s "do you think that should go on e bay?? These are staying in their box, not that desperate yet.
  19. Just had some coloured EVA grips delivered from Mudhole last Thursday. Merlino Bill Oi Oi yourself. If your mate is keen and wants to practice a bit I can send him down some thread, old guides I`ve stripped off rods and a spare bit of blank or two to let him get his hand in. Stan
  20. Chris you are a genius, had never thought of that. We were thinking weaving or carpet making, looks like you`ve cracked it,, now to check E Bay
  21. Would anyone have the slightest idea what these hooky things are. Was clearing out some old boxes of my mums and found them with her sewing knitting stuff. Wife runs a knitting business and she is certain they are not crochet hooks. The hook bit is very sharp and steel. Before Snatcher or Norrie get stuck in, I have worked out that the one at the bottom is a pen
  22. When I said a load of "old" tosh I was being literal. It was tried in the 1870`s -- 1900`s using all sorts of vegetable extracts to stop greenheart and the original Burma canes from drying out and taking a set. Carrot, yeast extract, crushed doken leaf and so on. Big problem was they were all bio-degradable so were virtually useless. I have little doubt a lot of thought has gone into this and as I understand it, it is a surface type treatment, not an integral part of the matting / resin. If thats the case then how do they stop it being bio degradable now. Nature aint changed. OK I`m being cynical and a tad tongue in cheek but bet the last thing you want at the MOG is to be hauling in that 12lb bass when the "new" rod starts to, sprout leaves then fall to bits just as those wild boars are charging at you with glazed eyes and "we want carrots" looks in their faces. Remember I`m still having suspicions about fibreglass  I reckon the next generation of rods should revert back to tried and tested split cane
