  1. Jigotai, that first trout was so exciting! Wait...wait!...strike! I glad you got your photo in the end :)

Wasn't it interesting watching the trout (and to a lesser extent grayling) inspecting hookbaits in the clear water? Very often they'd drift down alongside the bait and circle it, looking at it very carefully, and then usually slowly swim back to their favourite spot. Bites only came when it ran through perfectly at the right speed and it wasn't caught by random current changes which gave away the fact it was tethered to something. Shots near the hook were a big no-no as well.

To get bites in the first place I had to go down to an 18 hook and single maggot, and later on in the sunshine a 2lb bottom. Fishing bread was better because I could go up to a 14. What a luxury!

I lost count of the amount of fish that swam up to my bait only to leave it alone and swim away. It was great fun sussing out how to outwit them though.

I was also surprised to see them swim back to exactly the same spot time and time again, even after being spooked.

  2. Firstly I’d like to thank Tony and Kayc for organizing another fantastic AN fish-in.

After a 2 hour drive I arrived at Timsbury nice and early so I could have a quick chat before the 8.00 am start.

I had decided beforehand to fish the main river for grayling and after we were given the ok to start, I set off . On the way over I had to cross over the slow and fast carriers, these were lovely looking stretches of water and I had to force myself to carry on to the main river, saying to myself that I’ll have a go there later.

I found a likely looking swim and set up my float rod and center pin and settled down. Anderoo and Maranman arrived and gave me a running commentary on my first fish as the water was so clear they could see everything. After a nice fight I netted my first brown trout of the day.

Not long after I had another bite, this time on sweetcorn, and I landed my first ever Grayling. It was a beautiful looking fish of about pound so I thought it would be a perfect photo opportunity, only to find out the batteries were dead in my camera. Doh :wallbash: .

I caught one more grayling about the same size in that swim and another brownie, bigger this time, giving a good account for itself on the light setup I had.

It all went quiet and I decided to make a move and only got as far as the next swim close to where Anderoo had been fishing. This swim was a lot shallower and fish were clearly visible but seemed very reluctant to take baits, although quite happy to take freebies. After fiddling with presentation and baits I finally started getting bites only to find I couldn’t keep them on the hook and lost 4 of what felt like nice size grayling then being snapped up by a trout which until then had ignored every bait that had come near him.

Although very frustrating I couldn’t pull myself away from that swim and I was rewarded with an acrobatic brownie that went airborne and a nice grayling which I managed to get pictured with (thanks goosequill). Pic to follow.

The carrier streams will have to wait till another day.

It was a fantastic day amongst great company and I can’t wait for the next AN fish in.

  3. Well, it's nearly time! I won't be on a computer after 5pm today, so for those going to Timsbury, see you on Sunday - and good luck :)

See you down there Anderoo

I've just got back from the tackle shop and am now baited up and ready to go(also a few pounds lighter, I don't seem to be able to only buy bait).

I also suggest we have a group centrepin spin before we start :D

  4. Hi all, I’m hoping to meet up with everyone before we start but I think that all depends on the road gods as I’ll be driving down on the day. Failing that I’ll have a wander around and hopefully I’ll get to meet most of you.

Tony, sorry to hear about loss of your wife’s mum, I hope all goes well.

Vidar, that’s a nice looking grayling your wife caught, if my first grayling looks like that I’ll be a happy man.

If anyone hears a lot of cursing and swearing on the bank, that’ll be me, using my centrepin. Any centrepin advice on the day would be much appreciated.

Anderoo, I'm already packed, just got to pick up my bait (and any extras that take my fancy while I'm there) on saturday and I'm ready to go.

    Andy.

  5. Hi Liamfish, A similar thing happened to me and I found it was a combination of things. Firstly I had the runner set very light, secondly I performed a rather energetic strike without closing the bail arm. This resulted in the spool starting up like a spinning top and creating a rather large birdsnest. I landed the fish but had to bring it in by hand.

  6. I've had a good year and have managed a few PB's including the following, Tench, Barbel, Perch and Pike. But the highlights have been fish that to me have been new species, these include Eel, Bream and my favourite, Ruffe (did'nt have a clue what it was at first). I'm now looking forward to catching my first grayling, lets hope they're feeding when we go to Timsbury.

  7. Hello...

I'm looking for a bit of advice.. Where is the best place to buy/get fresh maggots from - pref mail order?

    How do you store them?

Sorry if these are really stupid questions - don't know much about fishing... although I am starting to take an interest - much to my husbands delight!!

    Thanks,

    Ktlou

Hi Ktlou, read this thread about storing maggots link. Sorry moodyboy but it still makes me laugh  .

  8. Ive never fished the Lea but can you garantee easy numbers of fish (like the Severn) or is it just the ocaisional fish? I ask this as there are several waters that Ive caught barbel from but few that are as consistant as the Severn.

Hi Budgie, I had no problems catching this year but It's normally only 2 or 3 fish at a time during short sessions in the evening. I've never fished the severn so it's difficult to compare but by your post it sounds like the severn is good place to try.

  9. Hi wanzelbin, there is some good barbel fishing on the river lea at Fishers Green and Kings Weir, but I'm not sure whether it's day ticket there or not.

Personally I've been catching them further upstream past Hertford and have caught fish to about 8lb.

There's also a day ticket stretch at stanborough but that tends to be very busy on the weekends.

If you're interested in a trip up this way PM me and I'll sort something out for you.

  10.

Just out of curiosity, I googled your name Peter and soon found your address, and even a nice photo of you. It just goes to show how easy it is to get hold of someones details.

I nearly changed my handle to my real name when I heard someone moan about a poster hiding behind his handle...... I think I'll leave it as it is...too many hits on google.

  11. Just how do you go about powder coating leads? I`m thinking about buying a mould to start making my own leads but am a bit unsure as to how to go about adding the coating.

I know that the process of coating needs heat so am wondering if the lead can be sprinkled with powder when it comes out of the mould so as to have enough heat to melt it?

I remember a few years ago at school we used to plastic coat handles using a coloured plastic powder. All you had to do was heat the handle up and sprinkle the plastic powder on and let it cool down. I did'nt find anything on the net but I'm sure it's available. I did find this stuff though Link

    Andy.

  12. I'll put a pic up tomorrow hopefully.

Any perch over 2lb is a biggie I reckon, and I enjoyed catching those 1.5lbers from the Thames yesterday just as much! Perch are just such exciting fish.

Well done on a double PB session!

Cheers Anderoo, another reason I was pleased was it is a stretch of river that I've always thought looked good but have never had any luck with.

  13. Well done Anderoo, look forward to seeing the pictures.

I managed a pb perch on Sunday, still not quite in your league at 2 ¼ lb but still chuffed. I also managed a pb pike at 5lb(first one I’ve weighed). Both were caught on a spinner within a couple of casts of each other.

  14. While Tony is away it would be good to get a definate idea of who does or does not want to participate in the BBQ which can be added to our day at Timsbury,It does break the day up and if memory serves me, is a good quality meal.

The cost to supply us is £150.00 which would work out to £7.50 each assuming all wanted it: The fewer participating would increase the cost pro-rata or make it not viable so could all going express their preference by means of attatchment to this post for Tony to assess on his return :sun:

    Many thanks , Kevin

Put me down for the BBQ Kevin.

    Andy.

PS Cheques on it's way. (I included the £7.50 for the BBQ)
