  1. Hi Anderoo,

After seeing your pictures of 3lb+ perch, I must admit I was a bit envious, I am going to have a go at beating my poor perch pb of 1lb. I would like to beat my barbel pb as well, this stands at 6lb but the stretch of river I fish does not hold many bigger than that so it might take some time.

  2. Have to say a big thank you to Steve for giving me the opportunity to fish such an amazing place. Also to Peggy for the BBQ, and Gerry and Glynn for the tractor taxi to and from my swim.

It was fantastic fishing, and despite the rain and wind I enjoyed every minute of it. It was also nice to meet everybody and finally put some faces to names.

The lure fishing demo was excellent and has got me itching to try out a few things.

Great photo Den of the pike at Newts feet, I was standing next to you when it had a go and it certainly made me jump.

As far as my fish were concerned I was well chuffed with two pb tench 7-12 and 8-00, and my first eel at 3-08lb.The eel certainly gave me the runaround in the middle of the night.

    Any way here’s some pics.

(sorry about the size of the photo's)

  3. I've just been told there's some major roadworks on the M25 at the junction with the A10, so it might be a good idea to avoid it if you were thinking of going that way.

I'm leaving early tomorrow so see you all there.

  4. LOL - I have basically packed multiples (sometimes lots of multiples) of any lures and bits I don't think you have available and plan to simply borrow the other goodies.

I think I have around 35 lbs of lures & bits packed. :D :D Quite a few of them will remain in the UK when we leave though.

I'm sure the tackle you buy over here will make up for the tackle you leave behind. :D

  5. Imagine being 4000 miles from home with one real long swim inbetween.... :P

While I was writing that post the thought did cross my mind how you and Newt were coping. :)

  6. I don't know about you but Im starting to panic already. I have a habit of forgetting things when I'm going fishing :( . Usually I'm close to home so if I need to pop back it's no problem. I've started writing a list but I'll probably forget to put something on it. :D

  7. I have just had a look on the map and realised how far wingham is from us and its a fair old drive :o . Not that i am complaing as it wont be the first time ive travelled long distances to fish, drove to Ayr in scotland once for a days piking and then back home in the night.

Anyway i see there is a toll on the M25 (dartford ) does anybody know how much it is for a van and is the M25 in the "make Ken Livingstone rich zone", i think its called the conjestion zone.

You know what its like when us northern tourists come down south we are like fish out of water :D

Click here for toll prices. Its way outside conjestion zone.

  8. I dont know if any of you ever pop over to the yak forum, you might want to have a look at the Mid Wales Meet thread and have a look at the tope they have been catching. Totally mad.

    Andy.

  9. I'm buzzing B) I don't normally get the coarse gear out until 16th June (and trying not to think too much about the drive down there... :yucky: )

What are people hoping to catch? I'd love some fat, spring tench. A nice big perch would be good too. Record bream - sure, why not :D

To say I'm getting excited would be a understatement.

My main targets are going to be the tench and perch as well, but to be honest I'll be happy just being there meeting people and having a chat.

    Andy.

  10. I'm taking my son for a few hours on a local pool, he watched a John Wilson programme the other day and then told me he wants to catch a tench! (I've never caught a tench dad!)

So I will be doing my best to find him a smallish tench ;-)

    Mat

Good luck with the tench Matt, I hope your son catches one. The smile on his face will be priceless.

No fishing this weekend for me, I'll be trying my hardest to earn some brownie points from the wife so I can extend my pass for the wingham fishin.

  11. I was talking to a South African guy in India who picked up a chunk of the local rough as hell blue washing soap, sniffed it and told be it was the same stuff they used for vundu and sharptooth cats in Africa.

Strangest things i've used are some of the naturals, Snails (with shell), blackberries, woodlice erc. They all worked.

The one I keep meaning to try is Swann Mussell.

When I was fishing in zimbabwe they used soap alot for the vundu catfish. Swan mussel is a great bait for catfish over here and well worth a try.

  12. Hi all,

After reading so much about center pins in magazines and here on AN, last year I bought myself a Match Aerial. Now being brought up on fixed spool reels I thought this was going to be a walk in the park, how wrong I was. The first time I used it was for barbel and got the fright of my life when the ratchet started screaming as my first barbel on a pin tore off down stream. Later that same evening same thing happened but this time it took the skin off my knuckles as I attempted to slow it down, I then got snapped up when I finally got hold of it. Since then I’ve used it a few more times on the river catching some nice chub but am far from confident using it and still use my fixed spool for most of my fishing. I just need a bit more practice. So if there is anyone out there could spare 5 mins to help a pin novice at the Wingham fish-in I would be grateful for any advice.

  13. Hi Comus, I bought my smartcast off Ebay for less than £100 but it came from the states and worked on a different frequency which I think maybe illegal in this country. They have a very short range so I am not sure if they would cause any problems.

I have to agree with Andy and Boozlebear, good for feature finding, rubbish for fish finding.

  14. How accurately had you plummeted ? sometimes sucked maggots with no indication on the float can mean you are fishing a bit overdepth. Shallowing up a touch, and/or moving your dropper shot a bit close to the hook can both help here as you give the fish less "free" line before you see an indication of the float.

    Mat

I was fishing on a slope at about 6 ft deep, I think the wind was blowing the float back so the line might of been laying on the slope and causing it to be overdepth. Perhaps I should of used a feeder.

  15. i would have use as fine a float tip as i could see dotted right down so the slightest touch would drag it under

i particulary like some cane tipped floats i brought years ago but havnt seen them since.either that or just recast every five 10 mins regardless, and tolerated the sucked maggots.

Would that of done the trick with the water being so choppy.

  16. Hi all, I fished a local lake today and had a good session catching roach and perch. Although I was catching I often found I was reeling in with nothing more than an empty maggot skin. The problem I was having was seeing bites. I was fishing a waggler, the water was quite choppy and the wind was also in my face.

The question is , How would you of fished this situation?

    Thanks in advance, Andy
