  1. Hi col, I've got a mate who fishes Bowmans (I think it's called willow lakes now), I'll find out what it's like. Another place that may be worth a go is Timberlands in Harlow, Essex. I believe Peter M fishes there, he may be able to give us some info.

  2. Hi Jamie, the only stillwater chub I have caught was off the top with a bit of fake bread. It hit the bait really hard, well worth a go.

  3. HI ALL, was wondering do any of you guys meet up, to match the faces to the names for a day's fishing, as i live in herts, and they occur now and then i would be very much interested in meeting others, i met ANDY aka (JIGOTAI). and his 4yr old son, very nice guy, and gave me some very useful tips, nice to meet you both, anyways thought i would throw the idea into the pot, see what you guys thought. Cheers col. :yeah:

Hi Col, It was nice to meet you and your son. Shame I had to go early, unfortunately my lad’s attention only lasted a couple of hours.

How did you get on for the rest of the day, from what I remember your son seemed to be catching more than you, and me coming to think of it.

As for a meet I’d be up for one, perhaps in the Herts, Essex and Beds area. Any ideas.

  4. I would think that the only way in which old OS maps would fail is that some waters that are shown are likely to have been filled in. If you know that there is a housing or industrial estete in that area it won't be worth looking. However, there are some interesting little lakes tucked away on estates that many people have forgotten about. They will be marked on old OS maps.

One lake I found on an OS map was in the Dane End area in Hertfordshire. I found it and fished it over 40 years ago. It hadn't been fished for many years before I went there. I don't know if the lake is still there or whether there are still any fish in it, but it might be worth a look. I called it the Willow Pool when I was fishing it.

    Hello Chevin,

where abouts in Dane End would that be, my brother lives there and it would be interesting to know where it is. I'll go take a look. As a kid I used to fish a pond in Colliers End we used to call Stepney's pond after the old boy who took our money, and I think there was a pond in Chapmore end that my brother used to fish, both close to Dane end.

  5. Yes asp is a great fighter they attack your lure like a mad man it's a fish of fast flowing water so they put a good fight but you can fish them on light lines say 6 lbs mono or 10/00 braid

Thanks Jerry, I think I am going to have to put Holland on my list of places to fish.

  6. All

I have recently started fishing on a pole. In an attempt to persuade my 4 year old daughter to accompany me fishing I bought her a shakespeare "barbie" rod that I had to order from the US. The rod is fine but it is a tele and is only 2 foot long. This makes striking impossible as you dont have enough to set the hook.

I was thinking of buyng her a whip pole and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what size and how much to spend.

Hi Mat when I first got my kids into fishing I bought them a 3 m whip from Bennets of Sheffield. They were very cheap and the kids found them very easy to use. The only problem with the ones I bought was that they were not elasticated and if a larger fish took the bait they were easily snapped up. Also any longer than 3m and my kids had trouble handling them (they were 6 and 7 yrs at the time). I hope this helps.

dunno about new one council are building at the moment they have only started digging it out monday but i suspect so as it will be council owned

I meant your garden pond, It looks well stocked  . Good news about the council lake as well, I thought all the councils wanted to do these days is fill them in.

  9. Hi Carpio, I got back into fishing a couple of years ago because of my kids and have had some really good days out. Now that it has started to warm up I'll be taking them again. I'll be going to Rib Valley Lakes which is near you, so if you want to come down you are welcome, I'll be able help you find some of the better swims. PM me if you are interested.

    Regards Andy.

  10. I've heard wasp grubs can be good, not sure what for, probably chub. The fun bit is collecting them. I would get some kids to collect them, as I can remember as a kid we used to find it fun poking sticks in the nests, a bit older and wiser now though.

  11. Thats the pond the perch came from, lots of small rudd with some nice size rudd and perch. We found red maggot worked better for the bigger fish. Did'nt like the designated areas on the large lake as the platforms were high with railings to stop you falling in which meant you had to stand.

  12. End of this month will be spending long weekend Ceterparcs Nottingham , have been before and caught small carp/rudd , but has anyone any advice to maximise my chances during a short stay ? Best bait ? Ground bait ? Anything ? THANKS.

Hi BREAMAGAIN, I hav'nt fished at the Nottingham Centre parks but it looked a nice lake when I was there last. I know you're not supposed to but if you try the ponds in between the chalets there are some nice perch getting fat on the stunted rudd. Last year I stayed at the Elveden forest Centreparcs and could'nt resist and caught some nice rudd and perch. See the pic of my nephews perch that took a small rudd he was reeling in.

  13. I think you have to be careful down my way the lee navigation is classed as a canal below turnford lock and fishing is allowed but classed as a river above and is actually closed. you need to check, perhaps a local tackle shop will know about your streach.

Peter, I was told you could fish the Lea navigation but was not sure were from, thanks for that. Can you fish your local canal the Stort,

or is that classed as a river.

  14. Has anyone tried Rabbit Burgers?

I got a neighbour a few Bunnies (Netted not shot so no bruising) to have a go at making them and she brought us a batch round to try out. All I can say is "Highly Reccomended" infact they were that good I just chomped a pan full on their own and nothing else. So if you get the time to make some give it a go you won't regret it.

    Tigger.

A freind of mine has a field that is teeming with rabbits and when he has a BBQ there's always rabbit burgers on the menu. Very tasty

  15. I had a similar thing happen to me in a Ford p100 pickup diesel. I was driving along at about 70 when the engine just went mad and started increasing in speed. I turned the ignition off and it carried on going with a huge cloud of smoke coming out of the back. It was quite scary as i was in the fast lane of a busy motorway at the time. I was later told it was running on its own engine oil after getting past wrongly fitted piston rings.

I can imagine with modern cars being 'fly by wire' anything could happen when they get a glitch in their cpu.

  16. Early start tomorrow on the lea, it's going to be a cold one. Chubbing to start with then back to the weir pool for the my last chance of lure fishing for a pike I've hooked and lost a couple of times this winter.

  17. Is there any known convention for the colours of multi-tip quiver rods?

Then I resorted to science - dangling a good sized bomb from the various tips off the edge of a table - and found than in fact the *thinnest* (yellow) tip was the stiffest.

I don't think there is any set colour coding for tips, mine are all orange, but they do have the weights printed on them. I have 3/4 oz, 1.1/2 oz and 3 oz, the two larger diameter tips are glass and are the lighter weights. The heavier 3 oz tip is made out of carbon and is the thinnest. If the weights are'nt shown the method you described would be the best test.

    Andy.
