  1. Macclesfield is a great place, I actually lived in Poynton but I still love Macclesfield. I am staying in Macc. at the start of my visit. It was always known as 'Treacle Town' - not sure why! Fittons pies (Chester Road) used to be the best pies in the area. Reagards to all, Ron
  2. Interesting topic. I faced thugs on many occasions during my working life in England. I am only 5'4" and I have faced thugs over 6' on many, many occasions. I was once kicked unconscious by a lout who the police did not think it was 'worth prosecuting'! I used to use a three cell Maglite which I still have. When faced with a scum of the earth lout and you know that there is trouble - STRIKE FIRST WITHOUT WARNING!! The collar bone area is best. My son once had all his top of the range Carp Gear stolen by a drug addict while he was night fishing. The Police did not want to know, fortunately we got a lead and took along some heafty friends and recovered ALL his gear. Incidentally, at 5'4" I was obviously not a copper - I was a Paramedic!!! I am now living safely in Canada. Best of luck with this project. Ron
  3. Hi All, I used to live in the Macclesfield area of Cheshire (well somebody has to) but I escaped and I now live in 'paradise'- Ontario, Canada. I will be making a trip to UK at the end of December and I will buy some 'proper' fishing gear!! Regards, Ron
  4. Hi 'Newt' Thanks for the reply. The lakes where there are no other people are in an area known as '30,000 Islands' and that is about right. It is about 6-7 hours north of here if you are driving! You can have fishing holidays on these islands with a guarantee that there is nobody else there!! There is still some open water fishing, it does not really get too cold until mid - late November, it is 21 degrees today, warm and sunny with a light breeze. I live about 100 miles west of Toronto in South West Ontario. I prefer a longer rod and as my son lives in Macclesfield in Cheshire I have got him looking for one for me. I will be over at New Year. Thanks for the help, Ron
  5. Hi All, This is my first post and I am looking for advise. I live in Ontario, Canada (after 55years in Cheshire)and I am looking to 're - start' my fishing hobby. I was never very good at fishing but I enjoyed myself and I loved catching carp when I could. Here, they use little 6' or 7' rods for everything!! They are like 'tooth picks' when compared to UK gear. What is the best set up for fishing for carp on a small lake - is it to float fish, or just weight the line and bottom fish? Any help would be most welcome and any sites that have diagrams of tackle set up would be great. I have been here five years and I am looking forward to fishing again. Kindest regards to you all, Ron Gillatt Woodstock Ontario
