  1. blooming ekk hi ya dave, long time m8. yea jake is fine i didn't know you used this forum i recently found it and it seems ok eh.

the reason i want to catch a pike is that jake keeps boasting to me that has has caught a bigger pike than i have lol.

so i put this post up for a grin to see the views on ole ade.

you 2 will have to take me out some time eh when he has finished decorating his old peoples home lol.

    chow for now dave.

    kempo.

    :yeah:

Hi again Lee. Yep this forums very pleasant by comparison with some others actually. I'll try arrange a day with Ade and yourself but you gota try bring your Jake alonh eh?

    Dave.

  2. How small the world is.

I know Mr Wakeford, he works for Thames Water, he used to be my overall boss, I would often pop in to his office and have a chat about pike fishing.

I wondered if i would ever see his name on this site, guess that answers that question.#

Does a very informative and entertaining talk does our Phil! ;)

  3. The movement of any predater must be governed by the movement of its food.

So when the shoal fish move the pike will move with them.

Undoubtedly gozzer, food must have a huge baring on Pike movents but there must be other, though probably less impactive, elements at play too?

The results from several tagging programmes Ive been involved in tend to support Daves statement that some pike move a lot more than others. This strangely isnt water specific but from individual fish to fish. The current research on one of these proggrammes is trying to find out wether resident or nomadic pike stick to the same thing all of their lives or change.

I'd be very interested in the out come of that one Budgie?

  4. In Fairness I think Geffaz was using Mr Hearn as an example, there is no doubt that some celebrity anglers make sure they have the edge before doing a session for the media, which then leads to unrealistic expectations for young impressionable anglers...

Yeah I can see that too!

  5. Hi

I have never actually started a thread before so here goes.

Reading a post on how old pike live for prompted me to ask about the movements of pike, particularly in rivers. I believe I have had recaptures on the same day from the same swim but have any of you had recaptures from different swims. If so, what distance apart and over what time period?

I firmly believe that you get some Pike that are Nomadic, some that seem to reside in a very localised area and yet others that do a bit of both or fit in somewhere in between those two types? But I can be wrong!

  6. It does lok like the lure has been tossed up the bank after loosing it's tail. There are indeed some idiot anglers in the world.

You can tell that they're stupid and thoughtless 'cause anyone with a brain would have removed and re-used the belly hook or even welded a curly tail on in place of the paddle.

How can one make the assumption that it "Does look like the lure has been tossed up the bank after losing it's tail"? I suspect its more likely that the lure was accidentally lost and the tail was detached by the hapless mutt? Incidentally I'm an animal love and dogs are right up there amongst my favorites.

  7. I've not time to read all of the posts at present so I may just duplicate someone elses advice? I prefer wobbling deads to lure fishing but green (seldom fished for) Pike are generally easy to catch? I'd wait for the weather to improve or at worse be stable for some time before I tackled somewhere that I wasnt intending to fish much. New moon, low pressure 8 - 10 degrees and a stiff breeze would see me very very optimistic! You have my envy!

  8. It seems to have switched off down my way too, except for the occasional suicidal chub. I'm out for a lure bash tomorrow and Friday and I'll be pre-baiting 2/3 swims for the weekend. Then I'm out on sunday for a bit of static four rod bait fishing just to see if I can change my luck. Had one decent fish at 22.5 when summer was just about over and thats been it.

You want to get out with that Bettle fella Gerry I gather he's very good.

  9. Yep I make you right on "the game of two halves" bit Budgie. I'm generally trying out new waters pre X-mas and often don't get to grips with them until after?

I'm sure there's something in what you say there Steve? Infact I've even moved swims before now when I'm catching too many little Pike.

  10. I have always understood that what stimulates a pike to attack is movement of the prey fish, not smell. The pikes sensor receptors are triggered by a sick or injured fish. I am no expert on Pike so perhaps the better informed amongst us might want to comment. It could be that smell might be a factor, but I doubt it.

Pike certainly respond to the stimulus you mention Rabbit but as the very pinnicle of the fresh water food chain they have perfected scavenging too and as such are extremely adept at locating food through scent alone. I can be mistaken ofcourse but I'm sure that Smell is indeed a very important factor.

  11. Instead of a ledger I use a swimfeeder filled with chopped sardine. Not sure if it works or not but it makes me feel happier that I am doing something positive :)

This is a ploy I've deployed (play on words) quite a few times. I'm convinced it helps!

  12. I personally use Power pro in 50lb or 65lb bs. It's actually quite difficult to tell the difference by dia alone. I got a 1500m spool from America off of Ebay for £52 inc p&p a year or so back !

As someone else said they do mostly tend to sink eventually though.

  13. Probably my favourite species currently, but I wouldn't want to see a seperate forum. In fact I think the current set-up is slightly flawed too. I think it's a better idea to keep the various factions together, not add to the alienation between the various disciplines. A single 'Angling' forum for me. ;)

Yeah, I'm in agreement with Slodger (Lol love that name) on this. The demographics of the mixed species users adds something that is not there on single species forums I think?

  14. Dave, I know of your exploits with naturel baits, but not lures. If I had to choose between an evening session and a morning session during the summer I would rather go for the evening, and that is nothing to do with laying in! But during the summer I'm very much a lure only type. So, I'm wondering, maybe a static, naturel bait in the morning, when the pike are actively hunting, and a lure in the evening when the angler is actively hunting. Fanciful thinking, or is there a glimmer of a sound theory there? Just a thought.

Winter, yes, evenings if the beasties feed outside mid-day, or do you find the mid-day theory flawed?

No I'd agree with possible (even likely) midday feeding sprees in winter Peter.

I cant comment on the Lures v baits thing as I simply have too little experience with lures to draw upon.
