  1. So whats your favourite Winter bait?

I'm off for a weekend session in a couple of weeks and must confess to be at a loss to how to approach the "Which bait to use" challenge, should I go bright and colourful or Matt and dull, Large single bait or Small multiple, savoury or sweet. Haven't done much winter carping, especially overnighters cos I tend to bring out the pike gear in the cooler months and therfore fish days only. My mate and I have just brought new bags (Trakker Pertex) and want to give them a bit of a testing before we head of to France for a week in February.

No asking for your Winter baiting secrets, just a nudge in the right direction to help me put a couple of fish on the bank and steal my mates thunder!!!!

    Cheers - Phil

  2. is THIS the place?? http://francedirect.net/Milin_De_Ruchec-P188.html If so I will try and get you what details I can from a good friend in France. I am moving over next yesr and hope to be able to offer help on such detail!!

Incidentally, Howards best fish this year is a 54 lb fish and he has had two over 50, 4 at 40+ and umpteen others!! The fishing in the region as far as I am aware is pretty good!!

    Hi Chris,

    Heard from y'mate yet????

  4. I'm another fan of the Sundridge Nimbus, that consists of a 2 piece outer and a 2 piece "Sleepskin" inner. This makes it very versatile and allows it to cope with all sorts of temperatures/weather.

Because the waterproof outer is breatheable and unlined it can also be used on wet summer days. Also, being in 2 pieces you could just use the trousers or jacket on their own. You don't therefore have to buy separate summer waterproofs. And being breathable you don't sweat so much in it when carrying your gear to your swim in winter.

It's been discontinued but may still be available at a reduced price from the following if their website is up to date: http://www.climaxtackle.com/sundridge_clearance_deals.htm

doesn't look like it comes we a free sleepskin though and they only have XX large

I've also got the Sundridge Heavyweight suit and the moon boots to go with it. It's discontinued now but it is very warm the only fault it has is its a one piece and it's not breathable.

Should I be buying another suit now I would buy a two piece breathable as I believe they are a more versatile piece of clothing . The breathable fabric is a must because if you do a lot of walking either along the banks or to your peg you sweat like a pig and then damp off as the moisture and excess heat can't escape from the suit fast enough to cool you off. If you do damp off in your suit in the winter then you go from extreamly hot to freezing cold within about twenty minutes and its not pleasant.

To avoid some of the sweating problems I've just ordered the Wychwood "sleepskin" system only they can't call it sleepskin as that's patented but its the same material. Hooded top and trousers to wear under your suit and reduce your clothing layers cost is £25

Keep hearing Wychwood "sleepskin" is identical material to the Sundridge version in which case £25 is a real bargain and I'll be ordering one ASAP. However I'm alway very dubious of cheaper imitations so have you seen or actually handled the Wychwood copy-cat sleepskin to get a true comparison. I KNOW the Sundridge sleepskin does exactly "what is says on the can" because I've got one and it's stood up to everyting I've thrown at it but as for the Wychwood.................................

  5. I had the opportunity to buy a sleepskin system seperately.

They wanted £50 for it, you got the top, some leggings and also a fleece type jacket. Now I am aware that there are other branded base layers about for half the price so felt a bit of research was required before handing over the dosh!

I realise the sleepskin is worn next to the skin, what do you wear over it apart from the suit? With my current kit I wear a micro fleece t shirt, sweatshirt, fleece and then the coat. It tends to feel bulky whilst fishing, maybe buying a sleepskin type set up may allow me to shed some layers and make my winter sessions more comfortable.

Nothing!!!! you wont need all those layers believe me. I've been pike fishing when temp has been -3 all day and worn nothing on top of the hoody (hate that word!!!) and not even felt the cold. I agree £50 is steep and I'm currently shopping around to see if I can find a deal. If I find anyone selling them cheaper I'll let you know. I wonder if you told them you don't want the fleece jacket if they'd sell just the sleepskin for sorta £30-35.

I'm off to France in February and need to buy a second sleepskin before I go. Obviously don't want to pay £50 unless I need to but will if I cant find a better deal. Probably sell fleece on ebay @ £15-20 anyway!!!!

Advice:- FWIW "Bite the bullet and buy one, you won't regret it"

  6. I'm not so sure the Fox 'A' Pod is a good deal.

It's extremely basic - non-extendable for a start, and clumsy to set up by comaprison with other budget pods. As with any pod, you can only point the rod dead ahead - what if you want to cast at an angle? It leads to inefficient bite registration on bite alarms.

Why not use 4 or 6 bank sticks? At least you can point the rods in the direction and save yourself a lot of money

I've got a Fox Warrior pod, with front & back buzzer bars and a Fishrite carrying tube you can have for £35 + P&P @ £7.25 (or collect, I'm near Cambridge, St Neots area) All in good condition. New prices Pod = £69, Buzzer Bars £15 and Tube £10. If interested email me at pparfitt@cambrige.org

  7. I'm using this one mate http://www.brentwoodangling.co.uk/jrc/supe...od_holdalls.htm takes 4 made up and 4 unmade,my dave lane brolly goes in no problem.

Looks awsome and I like JRC kit. I've got mainly Fox Evolution luggage but not sure about their matching rod holdall. Anyone actually got or handled one, I've only seen pictures and read Fox advertising blurb. I cant see it being as awsome as the JRC one. Looks like a must have item, better start ringing around for best deals, anyone know where I can better the Brentwood deal shown here???

  8. I've had a Sundridge Nimbus two piece suit for about 4 years now and it's still going strong. It's only ever once let me down with rain and that was when spinning all day from 7:am to 3:pm. Believe you me it absolutely poured ALL day without stopping and I must confess the suit did allow me to get dampish and therefore cold by the end of the day but it took everything the weather could throw at it all day long before it gave up. I was totally exposed to the elements all day and did not have to seek shelter once, whilst others on the lack were huddled under brollies or packed up early I fished right through. Sundridge clothing is pukka kit and worth every penny IMO. As for the sleepskin, well you need to experience it to believe it. The keep you warmer then warm, even on the coldest British winter's day. Worn under the Nimbus they provide a level of warmth & comfort I challenge anyone match.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for and Sundridge suits are quality and last well. Like I said I've put mine through 4 years of slog including numerous piking trips and dog walking sessions and it's still going strong. My only complaint is the sleepskin has pilled badly and looks scruffy but it still keeps me warm.

  9. Need to buy a good quality rod transporting system, who's using what and what recommendations can you offer me??

I want a good quality one that will last and take at least 4 made up rods (maybe 5 shortly). would also like it to house my Dave lane sti brolly shelter and 42" landing net.

  10. Its still for sale as i picked up my continental easy dome on friday

Any offers yet? Don't actually need another bivvy as I've already got the one man STI jobbie which I think is the Mutz nutz by the way. However my ol' boy sometimes nags me to come along so a 2 man version would be handy to have if needed (probably maximum of twice a year!!!) but I cannot justify spending £120. It would be cheaper to buy as lesser one-man bivvy for him. How low will y'go mate? offer might follow if price is right!!

I assume this is the old version WITHOUT the porch???

  11. Well it was a blankety-blank for me but my mate took a nice 15lb common in the next swim although seeing what else came out from the nature reserve pegs that looked one of the smaller fish.

Getting a boat and fishing out on the island looks a fun experience.

Lovely lake though and friendly people means I will make a return for another crack at those big commons.

That's why the nature reserve pegs are more expensive!!!!!

  12. Not Sundridge but Nash do a second skin top and bottoms that are the same sort of thing at £24.99 for the pair. If you choose the Nash though make sure you order a size bigger than you'd normally have as they are sized on the small size.

Thanks Ant, I'll have a look at the Nash version but Sundridge Sleepskin is gonna take some beating. Is the Nash version just fleece material?

  13. These undersuits are absolutely brilliant. Mine came free with my Nimbus 2 piece suit and has served me well for 4 seasons. Unfortunately it's getting passed it's best now and I would like to buy a new one ready for my week in France in February. Think personal hygeine demands at least one change during my stay, although site does offer showers. Just looked up a few web sites and they're all asking around £49.99 for the two piece sleepskin. Good kit but £49.99 is a bit steep. I know I've seen them on offer somewhere for as little as £29.99 which I reckon to be a fair price. Can anyone point me in the right direction or know where I can pick one up on the cheap.

    Cheers - Phil

  14. When filling up your sportster, peak one or coleman tilley lamp add four squirts of lighter fluid to the tank.

This increases the octane and prevents the generator getting fouled up.

    They are expensive to replace.

It also improves efficentcy and increases the brightness of a tilley lamp.

Also try to use coleman fuel at least twich a year. ;)

    Hi Rudd,

I've got two Coleman stoves, a single and a double burner. The double is almost new and only used in anger once. What's the benefit of using the Coleman fuel (twice a year)? it's expensive but is it better?

    Please explain.

    Cheers - Phil

    Any joy yet Chris?

Any info regarding fishing in France in February would be appreciated. We've now booked to go 25th Feb to 4th March. Anyone know of a site giving avg weather conditions and daylight hours etc I could visit. Neither of us have been before and are trying to do as much home-work and research as possible. apparently nobody has ever blanked at the venue and I do not want to be the first!!!!

  16. Just arrived, but still in the box, one Trakker Big Z Pertex bag!!!! Looks like the mutz nutz but haven't unpacked it properly yet (still at work). Mighty BIG and bl&&dy heavy though. Hope I've made the right choice, cost me £114.99 from England Angling.

  17. It is the dogs bits,i paid £110 for mine and got a thermal cover for nowt with it. The jrc storm is supposed to be a good bag.

Cheapest I've found is £119.99 (with B/C cover) @ Leslies but they're out of stock and apparently Trakker are discontinuing the Pertex version. Leslies are also offering the Peachskin (slightly cheaper version) @ £79.99 (including free B/C cover), Climax have the Pertex (inc cover) @ £129.99.

Where did you get your Pertex from @ £110 sounds like a real bargain. Please let me know cos i'd prefer the best money can buy and dont want to buy the peachskin @ £79.99 if I can get the Pertex for just £30 more. Need to know ASAP cos my mate is going to Leslies on Wednesday and that'll save me £9.00 postage as well.
