  1. The whole point of air drying is to preserve the baits. Keep them dry and they will be fine stored at room temperature.

Don't however be lulled into thinking air dry baits = nuisance fish proof. They are whilst rock hard but rehydrate quickly in water and in some cases go softer than fresh baits. In my experience air drys become soft in a couple of hours but it may well depend on the exact bait you are using. I would however suggest you test it out at home in a glass of water to check.

    Rob.

That's great Rob, thanks !!!! so although they contain no preservatives will still keep (after drying) at room temperature in my bait cupboard. Wifey is forever whinging about not having enough space in the freezer due to copious kilos of boilies so I can air dry the lot and store in plastic type sealed containers without worrying about them going off.

  2. Many years ago, (when I wor a lad). I remember reading an article by, I think, Dick Walker.

He suggested using 'balanced' weights. I think lignum vitae was one of the materials he mentioned. But I am sure that with the advances in plastics, then a 'nearly neutral' buoyancy one could be used, if your not casting too far. Another way was to make a weight with lead and a buoyant material combined.

The idea is that the weight, being of a material that just sinks, will rest on the silt, and not in it.

    John.

I think Fox do something like this for pike fishing, might be worth a sniff.

  3. Polly,Ive always found "black silt" ie the smelly stuff very poor to fish in/over.Normal silt is however different!

hopefully it's not the "black stuff" then, membership only kicked off yesterday so not fished lake yet. Membership secretary told me about fishin the silt when I went for a look round a week or two back

  4. I currently own 6 GFMs which I have used constantly both at home and in France for the last 8 years. Apart from changing the changing batteries each season they have never let me down in any conditions. The only difference that I can see between my GFMs and the current GFS models is that I have an extra connection at the bottom which can be used with a drop off indicator for Pike. I have used them wired up to a sounder box and through a remote wiyhout any problems. Three of them are permanently set up on a bar complete with remote. Prior to the GFMs I used a previous incarnation of the Good Fishing indicators. I have used many different bite indicators over the years which has included models from Fox, Delkim, Daiwa, Optonics going back to BJs and Herons but in my opinion in terms of value and reliability, the products from Good Fishing take some beating providing you don't want all the frills of dropback differentiation. It may sound strange but the only other alarms that I have been 100% happy with are Optonics. Stilll have 3 XLs. All the others have long since gone.

    Trust this helps

Thanks for help and info TT, very useful. Will check out show on Saturday for bargains and then consider a set of these.

Anyone tried or played with the Matt Hayes jobbies on here, Tacklebargains doing set of 3 for £99 !!!! £50 off RRP

  5. .........as previous post I'm going to a lake where dropping a bait onto the silt is a "winning" line of attack (or so I'm told). Rigs, I think I've mentally cooked up something to deal with sitting a bait just on top of the "black-stuff" so that it sits half in-half out and remains on view. However, which style of lead is best? I've heard in-line leads are a "No-No" and that pendant method is best. Which shape sits in silt best to give best presentation? Would putting lead into a pva bag help and stop it sinking too deep into the silt.

Also, should I use a stiff hinged hook length or is a softer braid type better????

  6. If you want a remote set up it is well worth looking at the offerings from Good Fishing. I have used their alarms for many years and they are excellent value, See attached link.

Think you put me onto this before, looks like ok kit, sounds like you're happy with it. Pressume alarms ok in all weathers and reliable? Goint to Carpin' On show this Saturday so hopefully will pick up a cheap deal on TXR or similar, if not will consider GF kit, £124 for 3 alarmed set up is brilliant value.

How good are the alarms, have you had any problems with them????

  7. Polly,

I know the reply is a litle late but here goes.

I fish an inline, i put a ruber ball about a foot from the swivel to stop the lead.

I will then balance the bait with rig putty, just before I cast out I cut a piece of high riser in half, squeese the two pieces together over the hook point, this way I know the hook is not in the silt(heavy), the pieces of high riser come to the surface after a while, so i know my hook is open. I also use this method in weed.

    Roger

Borntofish it's never too late, makes a lot of sense what you say and give me plenty of food for thought. Will need to play around with the ideas and develop my own way. Thanks again Buddy

  8. I have known that for a while now !

However I will not give up, there are loads of decent fish out there to be caught in all weather.

Its only a matter of time !

Only joking Buddy !!!! I know you'd gonna get that 30 mate and y'right is is just a matter of time, stick at it

Anyway, at least you're out there trying which is more than I can boast at the moment. Will be soon though, especially after 1st March when new ticket cuts in.

  9. Dont know about anyone else but I have no objection to being disturbed by an alarm when someone has a run. What does get my back up is when guys are connecting there swingers or setting up, Oh and having the alarms set far too high in the first place.

I know exactly what you mean John, nothing winds me up more than people leaving alarms turned on when setting up bobbins etc, always turn mine off but give a quick tug when set to make sure everythin A-OK before returning to bivvy.

Like I said, my "el cheapo" Fox ES alarms are so bl@@dy loud even at lowest volume that any run or liner will wake the whole lake up, I'm sure other anglers, like you, won't mind too much but would prefer not to disturb them in the first place. I know when I'm dozing (don't sleep too deeply) in the early hours, I jump EVERY time I hear a bleep, be it from my alarms or other peoples. It's like a spontaneous reaction usually followed by the word "sh!t" as I realise my bobbins are motion-less and the chap across the lake is bent into a fish. Also, screaming alarms will sometimes attract a crowd (even at 2am) and i don't like playing fish with an audience, don't mind after fish is on mat but not while my rod is still bent, too many people try to help but end up hindering and to be honest I prefer to land my own fish.

  10. I only use "el cheapo" Fox ES alarms and they do a perfectly good job. However, I'm moving onto a small (5 acre) lake this year and figured so as not to annoy others I maybe need to get some kind of plug-in remote sysyem to make alarms quieter (or even silent). I don't want wires everywhere so looking for reasonabley cheap option that'll allow little or "no noise" outside bivvy. I've done that "turn them down" thing but even on lowest setting still VERY loud at 2am on a small cosy lake in the middle of nowhere. It's not a "secretive" thing, I'm only too pleased for others to know I'm catching but really don't want to be "Waking th Lake" every time I get a tug.

  11. Anyone got any favourites they'd like to share with us..................

The lake I'm on this year has silt channels at 30mtrs and i'm told these are good spots to target, trouble is most of my carping to date has been done on gravel pits with little or no silty areas. I've always aimed to fish on the gravel patches (between weedbeds) and never experienced silt. I assume po-up approach is best but how do I place a baited rig into the silt and be confident it's still in view of passing fish???????????

  15. No-ones actually said where it is.

My objection nowadays is that I have no interest in listening to some self proclaimed 'carp star' talking about what's he's done. The old guys yep but I've seen them talk before, when I was starting out carping. The modern writers hold no interest to me, I'll learn more talking to good anglers on the bank.

There are very rarely any great discounts to be had, my mate runs his own tackle shop so I get a big enough discount anyway, plus I can go to the trade shows with him if I really want (I went to nashies one last year for something to do).

Don't get me wrong if you like the shows, then go and enjoy them, for me they used to interest me, they don't any more.

Hear what y'sayin' but I just enjoy the day out, surrounded by like-minded people, no nagging missus and arguing kids. Means missing a chance of spending the day on the bank but so what. assume we wont be seeing you there then Rob but anyone else going?
