  1. In the US these glasses are nearly as important as camo is in the UK lol. The difference being the glasses serve an important purpose.

Do not skimp on quality. UV protection is a very important aspect.

I will not fish without polaroid glasses. And I have three variations described by Newt.

  2. Peter,

My attempt at lighthearted brevity on no doubt a serious subject for you lads. In the US where two or more shall meet there will be disagreement.

But, let an outsider make a comment like me in this case, then it's "Katy bar the door", the real fight is on.

ART - he was skilled in the art of course angling

SPORT - he was an accomplished angling sportsman

PLEASURE - in his spare time he took pleasure in angling

VOCATION - made his living as an angler

  4. pres,

A man close to my heart.

In the US it is becoming fashionable to make three trips to an overloaded 3/4 ton pick-up truck.

    Holy smokes!

I carry about as you and have a pleasurable time.

In the US the average session is about 4 - 6 hrs (a guess). Some spend half that time getting ready or packing up. Not to mention the time spent at home getting ready and unpacking.

  5. Oddly,

Pike in the US are also extremly vlunerable to handling. One of the rare things we have in common with the UK I guess.

Pike do not replace the protective slime as quickly as most fish among other things.

Do not learn from an American instructor.

  6. Trent B.,

Point of order in a thread I have no business posting to.

    IMO

Ethics are the foundation of society the world around. A system for establishing morals based on our species determinaton of right and wrong.

Morals are operative words and deeds and can change with public sentimemt and opinion.

  7. Elton,

Do you mean carp caught in the UK with names that have an International flavor (no "U")?

Only in our (US) "paylakes" is it common for a carp to be twice caught.

I shall post this question to the paylakers and see if they "name" carp.

  8. Steve B.,

(barbless) banned on #8 and up" or something to that effect.

A point of interest. "UP" could mean a higher number as in a #10 (which would be a smaller hook) or "UP" could mean just a larger hook than #8, say a #6 which is a smaller number but larger hook.

PS When this thread winds down I am sending it off to a friend in the R&D department of the US's largest hook manufacturer. I'm sure he will be most interested. R&D on C&R fish damage is a hot potential marketing advantage and any manufacturer would like to be able to say, according to (?) our hook model (?) is "best" when it comes to reducing - - - (whatever).

  9. Koi,

You have me confused. In the US a prawn is a large shrimp. If you want to use a "small" prawn that would be a shrimp. Tiny bait shrimp are very cheap over here.

Doesn't matter I guess, we don't have those funky fish over here. We have our own funky fish.

  10. Let me contribute a smidge of opinion here. In the US we have lots of fish and do not seem to have the aversion to harvest for testing there is in the UK. I believe it was the US at Eagle Claw Hook Co., Denver Colorado that did testing on barbless vs. barbed hooks recently.

The tests were made with the antis in mind. There is a movement in PETA for government to require a 15 second rule for “playing” fish on Federal water. (They want fish to be landed and returned in 15 seconds from the time it is hooked. – A different thread)

It, these tests clearly determined, by visual examination of thousands of fish , barb vs. barbless was not a/the major issue with fish damage. More often angler skill landing the fish was the major (the most) contributor to lip damage. There was a strong correlation between horsing fish in using a powerful retrieve and fish damage regardless of hook style. Retrieve made the most difference. Worst result was with a solid rod of steel using an electric winch, least was a flyrod, skilled angler, and a BARBED hook matched to the size of fish to be caught on light tippets. Wire diameter was also a greater factor in damage than barb size and style.

The fish were trout but I can’t see too much difference between species.
