  2. I am having a couple of days grayling fishing in a week or two but the place we are staying has a coarse pond with carp/tench/etc. I have never fished for any of these before and was wondering about a couple of methods that you guys would suggest. I normally flyfish but we will have maggots/sweetcorn/worm for the grayling. We will have some feeders/floats etc but apart from that i wouldnt where to start! The simpler the better as there are a couple of guys with us that havent fished before!!

  4. As far as i am aware it can still be really good with some excellent catches being made. As to a comparison to 10 years ago i am afraid i have no idea.
  5. Your right it does exactly sound like brownie tackle...but not in November !! There are lost of rivers including annan nith tweed teviot etc that have specific grayling tickets but they are completely seperate to the trout tickets so it may be worth asking .
  6. I take it you have never fished a river for grayling in scotland as i have never heard so much garbage in all my life. The beats that we fish on the tay/tummel/earn all issue grayling tickets in fact some beats such as stanley on the tay and kinkell bridge on the earn have a lot of grayling fishers. There is not a baliff in Scotland(i have met a few) that would think you are fishing for anything other than grayling if using 4lb mainline and 2 or 3 lb hooklength. You can not be poaching as you suggest if you have the relevant ticket(you need written permision on any river with a protection order on it to fish for any species). You are right in that you do pick up a few out of season brown trout that are always safely returned.
  7. I would also agree...I tend to float fish when i can.. however there are a lot of occasions when its more practical to ledger than float fish . When the tay is big its very difficuilt to float fish some of the areas we fish so thats where this rod will come in.
  8. I am looking to buy a feeder rod for grayling fishing with weights up to 28gram . The mainline would probably be around the 5lb mark. I am quite happy to buy second hand so all suggestions are welcome.
  9. Maybe my last post confused matters. When i said "its fine" what i meant was as long as you are fishing for grayling and do happen to catch an out of season game fish as long as the fish is safely returned and you are not deliberately trying to catch them "its fine" as these things happen whilst grayling fishing. If you're fishing a river in Scotland, you're out of season, regardless of your chosen method/species. I assume you mean apart from when you are grayling fishing ??
  10. No problem on the legality and its quite commonoly used i am just not to sure on the best set up. As we fly fish as well for grayling i know how deadly the fly can be at times. You do pick up out of season brown/sea trout /salmon but as long as you are not fishing over 4lb mainline and put the fish back its fine.
  11. I am wanting to float fish maggotts/worm for grayling but i am wanting to incorporate a dropper with a fly that will fish higher in the water . I was wondering about shotting in a situation like this . Should i have all the shot below the dropper or some above or something else!! I am also unsure the best way to attach the dropper..should i use small rings or what is the best method that will tangle the least!
  12. I wonder if anyone has a spare manual that came with the abu 1044. A photocopy would be just as good. Cheers
  13. I am going to be float fishing for grayling this winter and have bought a closed face reel and a 13ft match rod. I was wondering what mono is usually used and whether it is better to use floating mono ???
  14. Glad you had a good day on the tope snatcher it w3as a pleasure to meet you and the guys. Dale...42lb ....f**K me . I bet he wanted it as part of his mixed grill that night the fat git!!(only kidding mate!)
  15. There were 3 of us that were lucky enough to get a last minute booking (It was actually his day off!..Many Thanks again!). We had been doing quite a bit of fishing from the shore with the fly and spinner around drummore area with varying success but it was when we went on Ians boat..Onyermarks thats when the fun really started. One of our party has difficuilties with balance and walking so the rock marks were getting far to dangerous for him.He was not having much luck until Ian took him under his wing and within 30 mins of fishing a launce under a float had managed to break his pb fish (6lb) 3 TIMES !!.. This where the fun ended for jack as he started to turn a paler shade of green!! Things went from bad to worse for jack and we had to drop him ashore!! We were flyfishing with DI7 fast sinking lines and and a range of flies (big clousers etc) and eddystone eels. We were fishing over 30/40ft of water witrh flies hitting 20ft on the drift fairly easily . We had fish that we litterally could not stop from hitting the kelp even with the drag fully set and holding the rod until in my case it broke!!We landed fish up to just under 8lb on the fly and im sure we lost bigger. These fish are some of the strongest you are likely to encounter with even a 2/3lb giving you a fantastic fight with vthe larger fish giving you heart stopping dives that are so hard to stop....AMAZING !! We must have caught 50/60 fish on the fly and conditions were far from ideal. I urge everyone to give this a go at leat once and i guarantee you will be back for more..at points in the day the fly was outfishing the live bait by at least 2 to 1 . Once again i would like to thank you Ian for a fantastic day which was about much more than just catching fish. Richard
  16. Good article in this months ffft magazine about fly fishing for carp. The fly used to good success was a size 16 red bloodworm with a very small red marabou tail. The idea being the fly is very light and simply cast and allowed to swing naturally in the wash. He used 3 flies on a very short 5 foot leader and struck at any movement . Richard
  17. Thanks for the reply ...That helps !! I was also wondering about fishing floating crust with the float..Would you shot as normal for a floating bait or do you use another style of float??
  18. I am going to be doing a bit of mullet fishing shortly and was advised to use the smallest crystal waggler i can find. I was wondering how i rig this. Do i use a rubber ring on the top and where do i put the shot?? Please help!!!!
  19. I am managing the bayonet part ..Its the silver spool cover underneath i can not get off. When i push the black centre piece it release and 2 pins pop back into the cover..when i turn the handle they pop back out. I just cant figure out how to get it off!!!
  20. I have just bought a abu 1044 and i can not get the spool off!! I am able to remove the metal outer casing with the writing on it but can not get any further!! Can someone please help.....
  21. There are 4 of us coming for the week..we arrive on saturday afternoon and im sure we will see you in the clash snatcher after your boat trip!! Cant wait !!!
  22. I fly fish mainly but i have just bought a shimano 390fa for float fishing for grayling in the winter. I would love to try it when i am fishing for mullet but i have no idea of a set up or which floats to use etc. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

  24. I was wondering what the difference was between an older closed faced reel like an abu 501 506 etc and the american style spincast reels. Im puzzled!
