  1. A plastic bag doesnt look as professional as a realtree sling!! But, I think they are good for weighing the smaller species such as perch or roach, they are so light you hardly need bother with correcting the scales, and yes I think they do prevent the fish from losing mucus, best to dip them first in water though, so they are moist for the fish.

i'm assuming that doesnt mean half fill them with water so your 3oz roach weighs in at a whopping 6lb

  2. dont over complicate yourself to a reccy first and decide on a cpl of tactics and baits.

if you try to many things you'll just spend a fortune and become pools fodder in the process.

If you dont know the venue wel do your homework first as far as baits and tactics. Get down there and ask those fishing it for hints and tips.

  3. quite often if its a good tackle shop they'll cut back and sort the lacky out for you once you tell them what you plan to catch.for the general fishing you describe personally i'd opt for a 6-8 for the silvers and odd bonus tench/bream, and if poles capable the biggest you can get in it (16-20) for carp fishing. This might sound totally stupid and could just be me but bigger carp are easier on the pole than 5lbers smaller ones seem to tear off all over the place.

  4. Its not a gurantee but nothing is at the moment i'm havuing success with 8-10 mm pellets superglued to a hair rig .

its simple really tie a knoteless knot (sure someone knows where a decent sketch of how to do it is)

leave a tail (no loop required about an inch past the bend of hook (i never bother to trim it )

then superglue 2 pellets together sandwiching the hair between the two loose feed smaller pellets and about 10 the same size of hookbait.

  5. A) How long have you been fishing after the age of 12?

    25 yrs

    B) How many days a year do you fish?

    about 60 ish i guess

    C) How many times have you had your Rod Licence checked (by official WA/NRA/EA baillif as opposed to club baillif or fishery owner)?

apart from when i fished nationals and everyone knew they would be round in more than 30 yrs of fishing i;ve

seen an ea bailiff once when i was 14 and sods law that whas the day i didnt have license on me so had to post proof.

  6. This isnt a definate answer more of a possible cause.

Because barbel are bottom feeders like bream, carp etc they searching continuosly with there mouths i suspect the reason for hooking outside is more likely because they havnt actually taken the bait but have nudged it and the hook point has pricked them. They panick tear off and it seems like a true bite because as the line tightens the hook goes in deeper. So my guess is if you make the hooklength longer still it could still happen.

BTW this is just a theory i have no proof

  7. Hi on the off chance what part of the country you in? Lots here from all over the place could help more if we knew what you inted to fish? rivers lakes etc someone may even offer to show you the ropes if you've forgotten abnthing.

  8. how long does it take to cut a loop and tie another one? Or just unhook the fish?

i'm assuming you wouldnt disconnect the hooklength put a new one on,rebait and recast before unhooking the fish?

  9. Silly question but why use any top of clipped swivel? put a loop in the end of the mainline and connect it to the swivel by pushing the loop through the eye of the swivel then bringing the hooklength back through the mainline loop. To undo just reverse process.

  10. if you've just joined mkaa you'll know theres a night fishing ban in force now, and my advice would have been to night fish it. I might venture onto the weirpool at this time of year but wouldnt bother with the lakes during the day its not what i would call a prolific water as for method i couldnt really suggest any that would put fish on the bank as it is that hard. Years go i use to get tench using boilies at night on a basic lead set up, but i've only ever had a few bits during the day.

  11. cant comment on the hyperloop float rod but i have its predecesor the powerloop at 13 ft been using it close on 10 yrs now and i cant fault it. Had fish from an oz to 15lb on it all on float gear and i've found it fairly light and a good allrounder for canals rivers and lakes. My advice would be decide where you want to fih first and buy floats etc to suit that venue as you venture to different waters do the same and you soon aquire most of the floats you need to suit most situations.

  12. Hello and welcome to the mad world of angling.

Dont know the particular canal your fishing but if your after tiddlers keep it simple

single maggot on size 20 hook just touching bottom of the canal, dot the float down so you can just see it and throw in half a dozen maggots every cast or cpl of minutes which evers sooner if you use any groundbait try and avoid blends with lots of food content , things like carp or method groundbaits a roach or match blend would be better. throw in a ball about the size of a small egg every 15 mins .

  13. Its a difficult one TerryT.You were breaking the rules (albeit for a good reason).I suppose he could have asked why you had a keepnet with you on a pleasure session knowing the rules.

If I had been the bailiff I would have given you the benifit of the doubt unless there had been any other time that I had caught you breaking this rule.A bit harsh.

Out of interest do you (fishing such a water) think that A. The double standard is fair? B. Actually achieves anything fish welfare wise? or C. Just accept that for a match a keepnet is a necessary "evil" and should be avoided when possible? or finally D. See no harm for either use if done properly?

I dont like the double standard but knowing this water i do appreciate the reasons for it again its lack of education but thats every anglers fault as equaly as it is mine.

with todays technology in nets the damage to fish tends to be overcrowding rather than the net itself is my belief. except in extremely hot weather when being forced to survive in the shallows under the heat of the sun is going to distress them.

As an ex match angler i do see the necessity for keep nets at matches but more and more i think waiting

until the end of a 5 hr match for the weigh in on such waters as its likely that multiple large fish are probable or in excess of 10 lb of bits is equally absurd for the example of drayton that i mentioned earlier the weigh in needs to be a minimum of hourly and still using 2 keepnets.

If keepnets are used corectly and sensibly i do think looking at a bag of fish at the end of a day is satisfying

but correctly and sensibly are the operative words.

as for the situation i found myself in i the keepnet is in my holdall as standard i dont tend to unpack it except to clean it in an antibacterial solution (water and detox normally) i use to fish the lake regulary and have never broken the rules before and the bailiff was aware of me in a fact as he recognised my face when ever i was there. I do think it was harsh considering what my reasons were on this occasion and considering he likelyhood of desease in such an over crowded lake.

  14. Ok my two penneth worth

i live in daventry right next to drayton resevoir. Its not unusual to catch 40 10lb ers in day

even during a match you have to have 2 keepnets but thats still 200 lb of carp in a net

even 5 x 10lb carp in one net is to many. But on the opposite side of the coin i pleasure fish it

no keepnet allowed. Caught a carp with lacerations on it , put it in a keepnet whilst i rooted around

in my box for some fish antiseptic stuff i keep. by the time i lifeted it out to treat it (no more than 2 mins)

i had an irate bailiff banning me even though i explained my reasons.

. Bearing in mind my keepnet is 16ft long with the last 6ft being carp sack i doubt if the carp recieved any damage in the net. Should i have been banned???

  15. from the size of the lake unless its 30 ft deep i wouldn,t consider the feeder at all it would be float or pole

i tend to only feeder fish on matches for bream anyway (unless it a carp puddle that i never fish anyway)
