  1. Thats a tough one.

Only free bits i know on the ouse are bedford town center from queens park right through to cardington mill. But never known of barbel coming out of this area at all. There about 2 swims on the wier at oakley other than that i'm stumped. Nearest thing to day tickets are Emberton park and cosgrove park.

I think all the real barbel areas are controlled by clubs.

  2. Which club have you joined?

From memory in the beds area theres loads of clubs

Luton : Canal , river and lakes

Vauxhall : mainly river ouse plus pits

Ampthill : Bit of river a few ponds/lakes, Dont know much about there waters

    Blunham : River ivel

    Bedord : river ouse

Verulem : river ouse opposite bank to vauxhall at radwell

    IPA : river ivel

i think theres a few others with waters in the bedfordshire area.

  3. Hi most of the Nene in that area is day ticket run by northampton nene angling club

i doubt you'll find any barbel though. Might find a few chub and the area above the weir (canoe slalom ) Does produce bags of bream and the odd tench.

Best place to get advice is carping capers on barrack road.

  4. There is no Technical know how when it comes to bait boats

Basic equipmenyt needed 2 floats ( fairy liquid bottlles )

a bit if 6 mm marine ply a cpl of hinges to create a hatch.

    3 servos (left/right. fwd/rvrs . operate hatch )

    1 motor

1 set very basic radio gear.

i might even try and make one but since every water i fish has banned them whats the point?

  5. Unfortunately i cant make the AN fishin i might pop down on the sunday to see everyone. I'm planning on going this weekend so i'll let you know how i get on.

PS does anyone need to borrow anything???

I can leave it in the club house and pick it when i go next.

  6. Its just my own opinion but i feel a lot of todays problems are down to education not the tackle.

People are coming into the sport targetting mainly carp on overstocked venues. They buy more and more powerful rods (3 1/2lb plus test) Big pit winches loaded with line pushing 20lb bs. On hooking a carp or other species they physically just real in. If you were to suggest to them about using a light line a and soft rod the answer is usualy , theres carp here over 20lb thats why i need 20lb line and this heavy gear. There educated o believe this is whats required.

I hate to say this but i think a lot of the responsibilty of education lies at the feet of the tackle shop.

Maybe its time for them to stop promoting carp fishing but fishing in general. Its going back a few years and unfortunately my uncle is now deceased. But he owned a tackle shop and every other saturday took groups of kids fishing. Never for carp but to just catch fish from gudgeon to dace on rivers lakes canals. This was a lot of the kids first induction to fishing. I chatted to him a few years later about these trips and being the canny business man he was his answer was in the long run it helps them and me.

They learn the basics properly and what it means to be an angler.

I make money out of them in years to come as they come to my shop to buy there bait and tackle.

I've not seen this attitude from a tackle shop owner since him.

  7. This is my personal view but if i was to set someone up with the basic kit i would buy an 11/12ft avon type rod this would be usuable as a float rod aswell ledger/feeder the closest thing i think there is between a hybrid float/ledger and you can buy reasonable reels for about £30 if you look at the okuma range. You want two spools with the reel one you can load with 3lb line the other 6 lb .

the important items are landing net and rod license.

And the terminal tackle like floats etc but for a £100 you should be able to buy some reasonable kit to get started.

rod something like this ( not endorsing this rod just the style)

    reel something like this

  8. Another quick thought if you get stuck call in your local tackle shop i'm sure they would demonstrate the methods we've attempted to describe. After all once the bug takes you'll be spending your non fishing hours there and a few uid long with it.

  9. I'm hoping to pop down on the sunday but wont be fishing. I could always do with advice on feature finding and spodding. Might sound silly but some people might like to ee the basics. Knotless knot semi fixed rigs stuff like that.

  10. sounds good i use a 20lb line i feel a bit safer using it if u seen the pic of my sexy 20lb 8oz!!! (i can't help but mention it :P hehe)

i'm actually planning on france trip in sept then move around europe trying out lakes with 2 other lads fishing with me. would they be ok in france? at the moment i am using a nash H-GUN a max performance carp rod.. and 2 rods my old man baught me years ago (carp rods too)

i got to ask what is TC? sorry for sounding dumb

TC is abbreviation for test curve personally i cant think of any freshwater fish in the uk that requires 20lb line

  11. I've planned an itinery, loo break around 2 or 4 each afternoon when I expect things to be quiet on the fishing front. I'm hoping my body can stick to the timetable :D Then collect my evening meal and the next days breakfast and lots of bait if I plan to spod stuff out before the evening session.

My first 24 hour itinery for this weekend goes some thing like this.

    Friday 23rd April

3pm Turn up, look around lake for swim.

4pm Quick Loo break and barrow stuff to swim bringing only enough bait and food for the night and next morning.

5pm Set up, spod etc and prepare evening meal.

    7pm Catch monster sized Perch.

10.00pm start to catch eels on worm baits.

11.00pm Give up on the worms and change all rods to corn, boilies or pellet.

    Saturday 24th April

1.00am Catch Monster sized Bream (Prob UK Record)

1.30am Reset rods and turn in for the night.

5.30am Woken from sleep by alarms and catch 10lb + Tench

7.00am Use the last of my food for breakfast.

Then continue to catch loads of Tench until lunch time.

1.00pm Head back to club house and car to restock up for the next 24 hours.

2.00pm Join queue for the toilet :D

Repeat above until time to leave, see it's easy once you have a good itinery :D The one nagging doubt is the catching eels, not sure if this is likely, but I will leave it in. It might happen.

    Had an idea

Why dont you cook your evening meal in the club house then you only need a tiny stove and kettle for a brew on the bank or just drink water.

  12. I agree with Terry & Anderoo the bulk of the stuff on session fishing is for comfort and essentials. I've been trying to organise my gear for a long session this weekend Friday afternoon to Monday morning. I have packed all my rig bits, weights, feeders etc in to a very small bag.

But I just can not see how to cut down on the other stuff such as bivy, chair, bed chair, sleeping bag, stove, pots, spare clothes, food, water and bait.

The actual fishing gear I will be taking is one rod holdall and one small bag with reels and rig items. The rest is all camping gear or bait.

At least barrowing it all to my swim will be good exercise :D

I'm down to one barrow load and a rucksack . Its all the pellet i carry that bulks mine up i worked out i used 4 kilo of pellet and 3 of groundbait on my last session. plus ground up boilies, corn and luncheon meat.. I forgot the worms lol

  13. Most of the excess gear a lot of anglers carry is purely for comfort. Even for sesssion fishing the actual tackle needed fits in a rucksack. But on the carp barrrow are my bivvy, sleeping bags, bed chair, food , stove, kettle pans, cool bag plus far to much spare bait.

  14. Stooby where abouts are you fishing out of interest? Like others have said i would assume small perch. Another point I find it best to hook worms at one end not through the middle (saddle) then you can nip off the other end and let all that juicy worm excrete into the water. and if its a big worm two baits for the price of one.
