  1. It's the indexing service. It indexes all of the content on your hard drive, which makes searches faster. If you don't often use windows search, it may be worthwhile turning it off. Instructions for XP here.

    Thanks for that.

  2. As far as I know, when a PC is idle the CPU usage should be somewhere between 3 to 7 %. However when I look in Windows Task Manager, I have a process named cisvc.exe that is hogging between 97 to 99 % CPU usage. I’m sure this is slowing my PC down a bit. The file exists in three locations on my PC. These are:

    C:\Windows\system32

    C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

    C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUnistall$

I’ve had a bit of a search on the internet about cisvc.exe and it does belong to Windows OS though there are some reports that cisvc.exe is also the name for a keylogger. In each case, if I check the properties for where cisvc.exe is located on my PC, all say that it’s a Microsoft version. I’ve done a full scan for viruses etc and none are reported on my PC. Can anybody give me a definitive way in which I could get my CPU usage somewhere back to what it’s supposed to be?

    Thanks for any advice.

  3. The MCB’s or whatever they are called used to trip the switches in my consumer unit regularly when light bulbs blew. I replaced the cheap filament bulbs I used to buy with decent low energy ones. They’ve now been in some months and are definitely lasting a lot longer. Hence, no tripped switches in the consumer unit anymore.

    Thank you for your reply.

One other strange thing that occurred today, and it has happened before to this user before was when they logged on to their (limited) account, all their icons had disappeared and their background picture had changed. Also, all their files were moved. The user does use a lot of social networking sites and I sometimes wonder just how secure these sites are. I do have a full security suite running so I don’t see why I should get any problems. Just strikes me as odd that it should happen to him twice and not to any of the other three users that use the pc.

  5. Hi

I started my computer up this morning and Windows (XP Home with Service Pack 3) decides to run chkdsk. I found the results in the log file below. Can anyone explain why Windows would run the task on its own and the briefly what the results mean? I know for sure that I definitely shut my computer down properly the last time it was used.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You

may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended

    that you continue.

Windows will now check the disk.

  6. I think I can remember the program title as The Fishing Race, competing for the Golden Maggot trophy. I think the late Ian Gillespie was in the first series as well as Terry Eustace. Also seem to remember one episode when a topless woman sailed pass one of the teams in a canoe.

  7. I recently added a new graphics card to my computer that needed its own power supply. I also have two hard drives, two optical drives and a floppy disk drive. The power supply is 400 watts. I was wondering if it was safe to run that many components on a 400 watt power supply. As of the moment, I haven’t smelt any burning coming from my computer.

Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

  8. I created a Hotmail account yesterday. After I switched the computer off I could not sign back in no matter what. Ages ago though my sister used my Windows XP account to log in to her Hotmail account. In order to try and resolve this issue I have done the following:

Delete all my cookies in case there’s a bad one in there.

Delete all my temporary internet files.

    Cleared personal information in AutoComplete.

    Run two different Windows cleaners.

One of my sons has a Hotmail account and he can access his Hotmail from his own Windows account. However, he can’t access his Hotmail account from my Windows account. Somehow I think it may have something to do when my sister accessed her Hotmail from my account.

Anyone know how to resolve this issue?

  9. Just done a quick conversion in a program called Convert. Minus 7 degrees Fahrenheit does equal – 22 degrees Celsius, or thereabouts. Just out of interest converting Celsius to Fahrenheit gets to a point where -40 Fahrenheit equals – 40 Celsius.
