  1. I think that I have a good idea of where this originated. Back in the late eighties early nineties, Specialist Tackle in Romford marketed a range of centrepins many of which were based on models such as the Match Aerial, Rapidex, Trudex and also what was known as Trotting Specials. I think that Fred Crouch was involved but looking at the reel you have the back is identical to the Trotting Specials. These were made by an old guy whose name I do not know and were fairly unique inasmuch as they were screwed together and not riveted. It is possible that reel you have which looks to be a copy of the Match Aerial was made by that particular person.

I have attached photos of the Trotting Specials I have both in wide and narrow drum versions and you will see that the back plates are identical.

  2. Why would i not need stabilisiers then? how do they stop themselves from moving around then?

    Cheers

By comparison, stainless is quite a bit smaller in dia and being very smooth requires less force to twist ie lass friction.. In addition the area of metal in the ground with stainless is a lot less. If you are fishing on hard or stoney ground, it often pays to drill a hole first. I used to use an old cut down bivvy storm stick with a bar through the end for this purpose.

  3. A great deal and I do like the feature of the flippable screen it's got to make self take photography so much easier.

For the price I think it is excellent value. Just the thing you need for all the hats :D plus a nice wide angle view for your terracotta army.

Here is a picture of the back for interest

  4. Final evening of the mini campaign, and I just couldn't munster up the enthusiasm to even try! In the end I went roach fishing instead

I reckon you were tired from having to carry that big bait bag :D

  5. For quite a while now my fishing trips have been restricted to a few trips to Wingham with the odd excursion on the local river. I do like to take a camera with me but that usually means taking a fairly large camera bag with all the associated bits. Whilst at Wingham on one occassion I was impressed by the camera that Steve Burke had which had a flip round screen so I started to have a good look at what was on the market. Needless to say anything new was very expensive so having looked at which various older models had the flip round screen facility I went on a ebay hunt. The result was a gem of a camera as shown in the attached picture which cost me including carriage £46.00. It came with all the manuals, CDs,leads, battery charger,a spare battery, instruction manual and best of all a remote. Whilst it is only 4 megapixels, the lens is superb and takes cracking pictures. This particular camera when it was first introduced had a £600 price tag and has a full range of operating modes including manual and auto if you want to play about. I thought that I would put this up in case anyone was looking for something similar without having to pay out a lot of money. There are several that come up on ebay although the ones I tended to look at were the Canon Powershot G range i.e G2, G3, G5 and G6. Thereis plenty of information available on the net in terms of reviews and if anyone is interested it is well worth doing a bit of research.

  6. Hi STC,

I have been using the V2 receiver and dongles with GF alarms for some time now. The only problem with the set up is that the alarms are not in sync with the receiver which basically means that you get a one toner. This has not caused any major issues but I am also waiting to see what Phil Pepper at GF comes up with. He did have some prototypes recently at Wingham but was having a problem with a short battery life. Have to see what he comes up with as I do rate the GF alarms which I have been using for many years now.

  7. I've got an old ABU Cardinal 44x, (circa 1975). Still a great little reel, but I only have the shallow match spool left. I wonder if it's possible to get spare spools for them. I've never seen another in all this time.

    John.

PS, Just had a look, and saw this,

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...94#ht_500wt_949

That's about 4 times what I paid for it!

    Here is another one

There are a few more of the 44s on e-bay with the deeper spool but the fast retrieve x is the rarer one.

  8. The big problem is that not only was the C3 model discontinued some years back it was never that popular in the UK the larger C5 selling far more.Difficult to get a secondhand one here in the UK and parts nigh on impossible!

Ive a couple of contacts in the US I use for ABU spares for the reel servicing repair work I do on multipliers so have all ready got them keeping an eye out for a decent conditioned C3.I will ask to see if they can get hold of any bail arm assembly spares (most likely the spring has gone in yours) if they can I can let you know and once my back log of work is out of the way can repair it for you.

    A few more here

  9. If they had a longer spool and better line lay I would use my C5's for almost every thing! Brought four back in the late 80's to replace mt 300S's but just didn't rate the line lay,Got used a lot for bait fishing for pike from the bank till I eventually moved on to Shimano's then were used (and still are) for Barbel. Two of them had a hard few years on a pair of heavy feeder rods and used by my Spain customers for catching carp for bait! Still going strong.

I sold my 54s and 55s off and replaced them with the C4s and C5s which I later sold off and replaced with various Shimanos. Really missed them so I sold several of the Shimanos off and bought the Cardinals back. Best constructed reel I have ever come accross except for the line lay which as you say is not the best but for short to medium range for any style of fishing they take some beating when it comes to reliability. No fancy beaering arrangement, just excellent materials and built to last. The liitle C3 is an absolute gem of a reel and well worth getting hold of if one crops up.

  10. Im on it mate! I think I would prefer the older one to the new as they still made them well then.

I prefer the C series to the 54s and 55s. Built like tanks. I will bring some to the next home fish in. THe little Shimanos are cracking reels though.

  11. Paul have you a C5 you could take a picture of it next to please as I haven't got a C4 anymore to compare with. Mind you if they made one and I can get hold of one I reckon a C3 would be perfect as well.

Be grateful if you can bring one of the C4's and Biomaster down for me to try next time your "home" mate"

With a C5. The C5 body is the same size as the C4. It is only the spool and housing that is smaller on the C4. The C3 is considerably smaller.

  12. Yes your right Ian they were designed for light lure fishing and the 5012 and 506M were just variants brought out to meet the need for the UK match scene of the time. (basically just ready converted models so back winding could be used to play fish) My only concern is that they are not as good a casting reel as an open faced fixed spool,However I will definitely give one of mine a go before I buy anything.Been toying with that idea from day one.

Stradic 2500,will definitely have a look on the Flea see whats about.

Dave,Rod and Tony,Yes the small Mitchell's do fit the bill and yes they are a good price,Just concerned that the build quality isn't what it used to be.

Newt if you see this was/is there a smaller version of that Mitchell 300X (?) I used when with you?

Also ABU C5/C4 fans ( Paul,Ian etc) did they do a C3? Now that would be perfect!

Read my mind Budgie, the C3 would be perfect for the job and virtually bullet proof. I do not think that they were sold wholesale into the UK but they do pop up from time to time on flea bay which is where I got mine from.. I have one and it is a cracking little reel. I have put a picture below of it alongside a C4 to give you an idea of size.

The other one is a Shimano Biomaster 3000 which I have 3 off and you are quite welcome to borrow one of those if you want. I also have a variety of closed face reels if you want to borrow one of those as well.
