    Unfortunately not Chris, in fact this year to date has turned out to be a right stinker with numerous problems both at work and home with the only fishing being a few trips to Wingham. Never mind, I have only got another 5 weeks to go until I retire so I am sure I will get a few opportunities :) .

    My long time fishing mate and his wife are coming to stay with us for a while and has asked me to arrange a few days on the Suffolk water park which I have not fished for a few years so that could be interesting. There will be a reciprocal visit a bit later so a bit of fishing on the Dove, Severn and Wye should be on the cards. Nice fish by the way. Having spoken to Chris at great length and now fully understand how he makes his reels and what tooling is used, I am currently contemplating ordering another one made up from parts of different reels. Did you know he has some parts already made to make a Coxon replica.

    TT, do you know the line rating for this rod ?

     

     

    Just noticed the seller has put down 6lb, which would make it suitable for larger species.

     

    Ian, I have used it with mainlines between 3 and 6 lbs and bottoms between 2 and 5lbs dependant on whether I have been after Roach or Chub. On the smaller rivers it is ideal for using a two or three loop cast especially in the jungle swims. Not up to the standard of your Normarks but pleasant to use especially when matched up to a 4" reel.

    I often use one of those for trotting with the pin on my little local river. I have a few of the John Wilson Heritage range which are pretty good. They do not come up very often but the trotting rod and the avon derivatives are worth picking up. There is also a specimen float rod which is ideal for Tench, Carp and Bream fishing.

    Absolutely fantastic result Andrew and well deserved. After watching you working out with the spod rod, I had to go back to the bivvy for a a nap :D That really was a well planned and well executed bit of angling :camera::thumbs: . I bet the big bait bag was a lot lighter going back. oh and welcome back.

    Excellent write up once again John. It certainly takes me back a few years. Living in Suffolk for the past twenty five years or so, I have in the past often walked around several of the venues that you have been fishing but have not taken it further. I used to spend hours with the binoculars looking at Homersfield, Weybread, the Ocean and also Alton water and Ardleigh. Spent a fair bit of time on Alton but never got round to the others. Like you I think that the Ocean is capable of a surprise or two and wish you every success in your quest. Looking forward to the next report.

    I don't have any superstitions around fishing, I do kind of think that luck plays a part like we discussed in another thread but I dont think I need to wear a lucky hat or salute a Magpie to be lucky. It's just a random thing, wait a minute what am I rambling about if its random then it's not luck :rolleyes: Well any way touch wood I'm not superstitious and now I don't think I believe in luck either.

     

    Not quite the right shape but bears a strong resemblence to your landing stage. I bet you carry a picture around and hang up a little Buddha :D

    So it's really only 2 bream in 3 years of trying, and I am immensely proud of both of them, regardless of what anyone else thinks :)

     

    And so you should be as those who actually know you have a great deal of respect for the time, effort, thought and dedication that you put into your fishing. You have a very impressive record of various big fish species from a variety of venues using a wide range of skills which just does not happen unless you put the time and effort in. On top of that you always try to genuinely help others and in reality you have nothing to prove to anyone apart from letting me into the secrets of the heavy bait bag B)

    I must confess to be a fan of washed out baits which started many years ago when I regularly fished a local pictureque gravel pit. This pit had been divided into two, both containing some specimen Tench with the larger of the two pits containg fish approaching double figures. Small Carp were introduced into the smaller pit but flooding occured and many escaped into the larger pit. These fish grew on to high teens with the odd low twenty and subsequently attracted many Carp fiherman especially in the summer months. Initially catch rates were high with boilies being the main baits used but deteriorated as the Carp became more cute. Whilst the size of the fish was not huge the quality was superb with the full range of patterns i.e. commons, fully scaled, linears etc. Although not big they were very pretty fish. A couple of us at he time looked at various ways to increase the catch rate which included rigs, presentations, baits, baiting strategies along with prevailing conditions etc and one of the things raised was the use of washed out baits used either on their own or with chopped boilie crumb in a bag. When trying washed out boilies, what was noticeable very quickly was that our catch rates improved whilst others who continued to use the mass/fresh baiting approach generally continued to struggle. The practice was to soak our hook baits in lakewater well in advance of fishing. The other interesting point is that this strategy continued to work well in the winter. This gave me a lot of confidence in the method and is one that I employ today where in the right conditions I am quite happy and confident to fish with either a single bait or with a small bag/stocking. I do not know exactly why it works and can only assume that for whatever reason the fish feel less wary. It also gave me the confidence when on long sessions to leave a bait in the water for long periods of time and whilst not always successfull it has worked on too many occassions to ignore.

    Now Ive done loads of carping! (lots on here tend to forget that and my current involvement in the big carp scene)and I spent many years (despite having fished for as equally many not specifically for carp) with a boillie for a brain and being equally as daft

     

    So very true for a lot of long standing anglers It took me many years to get back to KISS and sort out reality from theory.
