  1. Sounds sensible Rusty. Given the conditions and time of year I do think it's worth fishing in a way (in the daytime, anyway) that means you can catch both perch and tench. A running lead/feeder with worm or maggots on the hook will catch both. After dark, the eels often mean a change of bait, unless you don't mind them.

  2. I normally use 6lb line for the perch as long as I'm not fishing over bars or around thick weed. But heavier mainline with a lighter hooklength will be fine regardless.

And yes, the perch at wingham are the hardest fighting perch I've ever caught, I've often thought I was playing a 7lb tench only to find a 2lb perch in the net!

I have decided now to stay set up for the tench but to bring the perch gear too so I can alternate.

Steve, is it too late to get a tub of lobs?

  3. Thanks, Andrew.

Please could you let me know what editions they are and whether they're hardback or softback. Thanks.

All hardbacks, and I think all modern reprints of first editions:

oops forgot 'how to fish' in the pic (and no idea why it's appearing sideways!) but that's included.

  4. No probs, it's one of my favourite swims but as you say rather an overwhelming one...!

Interesting about the margin tinca - I have tried there before with not much luck, but that is where Glyn had his bream from. I've seen the odd tench wandering around that margin corner too and it always felt very perchy.

  5. I've found some books I can donate - all good condition:

Roach, the gentle giants - John Bailey

    Fenland zander - Steve younger

Falling in again - Chris Yates

The secret carp - Chris Yates

How to fish - Chris Yates

Confessions of a carp fisher - BB

Happy to split or keep as a bundle, no reserve.

  6. I'm in a bit of a quandary too. I thought I might fishing on the Carp Lake so I was just getting my carp head on and sorting out my camou-kit when Steve said that he had me down for Middle Wood on the Main Lake. Good, I thought. Fairly straightforward swim tench, tench, tench, but keep one rod fishing for bream at night and carp in the day, especially as there is little weed at present.

Blow me down if Steve then said he'd changed his mind and put me on the Point. Now what do I do? So much water, so many opportunities. Add to that, that on the few times I fished it, I've never had much success. Help!! Any advice from you regulars would be very welcome.

    Many thanks.

    Steve C.

Hey Steve, I've fished the point a few times although not for a while! The one thing it's not short of is options - I reckon you need about 10 rods out to cover your bases...!

I've never done much good in the deep channel. All my better fish (tench and carp) have come from the gravel plateau off towards windy city. From memory it's about 4-6ft deep there with rocky areas and is prone to weed. Just a case of finding clear bits. One of my fave spots is only a short lob, others more like 50-60yds. This was always later in the year though, may and june. Maybe the deeper water is a better bet in April? I'd just try both! Plus there's Steve's favourite gap in the bar to your left if the next swim is free, although I've never had much from it myself.

I've got all my old notes and markers on the swim, I'll bring it all with me if you like.

  7. Yes I'm having a bit of a wobble about what to do now. I was just going to tench fish with little bolt rigs/fake baits but now as the weekend gets closer and we have a better ides of conditions, I'm thinking maybe fishing in a way that would catch perch is a better choice. With a running rig and maggots/worms you'll pick up tench as well as perch, but not the other way around.

So maybe I should be getting more maggots and worms and changing it all around... If the perch haven't spawned they will be huge.

  8. Excellent advice from Rich apart from one thing. The worst thing in the world at 3 am is having a run especially if you have not got much on.

Hello there carpmeister, I seem to remember you had a habit of running out in the middle of the night in a distressing state of undress, in order to land a succession of carp... I hope you've been clothes shopping since then? ;)

(Maybe even splashed out on a new boilie :) )

EDIT: I think that's why Steve often tucks you away in Tim's Point.

  9. It's going to be coldish so not much - couple of pints of maggots, bit of groundbait, some hemp/other little seeds. Hook bait will be plastics. I'm not expecting to use much, at least to start with.

  10. I was just looking again using my phone and cant seem to find an address, map, directions. Was wondering how far the water is from glasgow.

    Cool gallery

According to google maps, 460 miles and would take 7.5hrs...worth a trip though :)

  11. I’d be really grateful if somebody could spend some time with me on Saturday marking/spodding a swim. I don’t have the gear for that and have previously relied on fairly inaccurate casting and chucking out balls of groundbait.

I'd be happy to - while we're at it you can tell me how to catch double figure tench ;)

  12. I haven't fished for absolutely ages! Normally I'd have been out every spare second completely overcome with chub fever but it just didn't happen this year, I don't know why. There was a spell where the Thames here was absolutely perfect, I knew where the big chub were likely to be, but I couldn't get motivated. I think I'm probably just bored now of doing the same thing each year and need a new challenge. The lure fishing provided that for a while but that's waning now too. I'd hit the big reservoirs again in a heartbeat but that's only for a short period each autumn.

Soon be trout time though, and I'm looking forward to dusting off the fly gear. I think I need to find a new obsession on the coarse side...maybe catfish? Maybe barbel? Maybe even big carp...?!
