  1. The system we have now allows any licence holder to ask to see another anglers licence.

Whether they choose to do so is another thing.

I don't believe that anyone's entitled to check other anglers' rod licences any more. Maybe it was on the back on the old licences, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing there now. Clubs may well have something in their rules about members being entitled to check other members' licences/tickets, but that's something quite different.

  2. just out of interest have any of you used Mighty Bright tape for your rods......have to say its fantastic stuff and very easy to apply plus its not at all bulky....might not be as sticky as some tapes but the brightness of it pays for that!

I use it on my beachcasters. Amazing stuff - just a bit of light on it and it glows like a lightsabre!

  3. I'm really surprised that so few people have answered carp (just three at time of writing) when so much of the fishing in the UK these days is for carp. I wonder whether this is a reflection of the age of those who have answered their survey (ie, old enough to have grown up in a time when carp were still a bit out of the ordinary for many anglers) or whether there are other factors at work?

  4. Excellent - thanks for not giving up on this one! I'd still love to try to make it along for the teach-in. I'm probably not going to be able to stick around for the fish-in though, as I don't have a bivvy or a tent or a suitable vehicle to kip in. And to be honest, I'm not entirely sure how appealing I find the idea of sleeping out in February anyway!

  5. That link is AN friendly, Yorkio :)

I reckon I've already got back my purchase cost, as they are cheap to run. Disposable ones are about a quid a go.

Right-o. One on the way to me now! Which will probably arrive just as the ice outside melts…

  6. I've been doing a bit of fishing lately, mainly off the beach, and this item that I mentioned previously has been a real God-send!

I've been thinking about getting one of those for ages and the thought of the taking the dog out in a minute has just pushed me into the purchase zone…

You got an AN-friendly eBay link for that search, Elton? The link from the article just seems to be for a regular eBay search.

  7. The book I am hoping to put together will be a much larger issue, 500 HB say, and my idea is based on ( those old enough will remember :D ) the Good/day Bad day Creel magazine format. It will be a real cost risk for me. But...........

Just out of curiosity, why are you going for hardback for these?

  8. Cheer Chavender -Thanks for the links

Everythng is updated on to a cd disc

You should also assume that you will lose that disc or that it'll get scratched or stolen or something. So if your files are really important, copy them to another disc too! For some sorts of files, I also find it useful to mail them to myself at a webmail account like a yahoo one, where they can sit in my inbox on the server indefinitely.

  9. Can anybody recommend a pet insurer for our dog?

Tescos have just said that our premium is going up to.....get this....£17.28 per month! I can insure a car for that!

Yeah, and vets charge a hell of lot more per hour than mechanics! Seriously though, if your dog's in an accident or comes down with something that requires ongoing treatment, you would not believe how the bills mount up! (You obviously know that though, otherwise you wouldn't have insurance already…)

We're with PetPlan, who have always been great and reasonably priced. A mate of mine has just got a new Jack Russell though and did a lot of investigating and reckoned that M&S pet insurance was the best value in terms of cost vs cover. To be honest, I suspect you're not going to be doing much more than shaving a quid or two off what you're already paying. Would be very interested if you do find any real deals though!

  10. Chin up (and take some mates with you next time)

While a gigantic riverside punch-up involving you and all your friends, plus your adversary and all his friends, might sound like a good idea, it probably wouldn't be the wisest move! I'd definitely report it to the police though. If he's hit you, unprovoked, and broken your property and thrown it in the river, then chances are he's done it to others, or at least tried to.

  11. its a sad sign of the times that profit margins comes before peoples enjoyment

That will always be the case when someone else is picking up the bill. I'm sure Elton could do the sums off the top of his head, but with a full-time paid editor plus all the associated hosting and maintenance fees for a site of that size, I wouldn't have thought FM would ever have been able to make money from a few banner ads. Quite the opposite, in fact, I'd have thought. I also suspect the forums weren't helping matters either. I was never a regular visitor over there, but for the past couple of years, whenever I did have a look, people on the forums hardly ever seemed to be talking about fishing. Which is all very well, but it probably wouldn't exactly have made it terribly appealing for new posters.

  12. Its good stuff and in high definition

That would be high definition with a lower case 'h' and a 'd', as opposed to HD, I think. It's a step up from YouTube quality certainly, but not by much. At first glance, the content looks a lot better than I was expecting though. I'd be very tempted to sign up just to see New Zealand Trophy Waters if you could download programmes to watch on your TV.

  13. wow i never even knew that existed. kinda weird all it has is words in it i cant see how that would be useful (as it is just now)

The problem is that no one ever bothers to read the sticky at the top of the section which tells them to contribute! You're quite right though – as it stands, it's not remotely useful.

It's also built with forum software, which really isn't suited to organising that sort of information. A wiki however would be.
