Alarm bells ringing!

Bloody hell! I've got a killer caterpillar on my hands?
Sheesh! I'm not going to destroy it, but I may well just release it in the morning.
I've just Googled urticating hairs and now I'm a bit worried!
Who'd have thought that something as innocent looking as a fuzzy caterpillar could be so potentially dangerous?
I must have been very lucky when I kept caterpillars as pets when I was a child!
Many thanks for the information.

Well done Rob! It does look indeed like the knot grass caterpillar, but Tattty seems a bit hairier than that. Still, that's the best and closest identification I've had so far.
It also seems likely that he could be the larva of a brown tailed moth caterpillar, which is apparently a bit of a pest and is fond of hawthorn, which would tie up with where I found him.
He may indeed be a pest, but to me he's a pet! Not quite sure what to do now. Do I release him to be a nuisance or keep him until he turns into a moth.
Do you think he'd make good bait?

Meet Tatty, our boating caterpillar!
He's very well behaved, despite only being less than an inch long...he was rescued from a certain drowning on the canal and is now happily esconced here at home and growing by the day.
Anybody able to tell me what he's going to be when he grows up? I'm stumped! I'm guessing from memory that he's going to be some sort of moth, but I'm struggling to find proper identification. I haven't kept caterpillars since I was a child, so this is keeping me immensely happy! It doesn't take much...
However, as soon as I find out exactly what species he is and what food he prefers, I'll release him into a suitable habitat.

Unfortunately I didn't get any decent shots of the black swans...well, I got a few, but most were a bit blurred...I blame it on R.J. plying me with Guinness! I think Christine got a few though. It was good to meet up with you and Alex.
I'll look forward to your blog...ours petered out after a couple of weeks when the laptop died. It was repaired in super quick time by Sue and Richard from CWDF - picked up on the bank on one canal and returned to us a few days later on another canal, with time for a mini bankside banter with Tawny Owl, RWLP, Cheshire~Rose and Postcode.
Unfortunately we were enjoying our trip so much that we just stuck it to one side and conveniently forgot about it for the next two weeks!
Very disappointed that we didn't get to do the K&A as we'd really love to do the Caen Hill flight, but we did manage to fit in Foxton, which was fabulous. We also did a slight detour after a chat with a boaty chap in Birmingham, so managed to do Dudley #1, Dudley #2 and the Stourbridge Canal...three new ones to tick off our list! It also meant that we got a mini-banter with Moley, which was brilliant!
The Dudley Canals were fabulous - I've never seen so many fish! There were literally thousands of decent roach in huge shoals on the off-side of the canal swimming by us as we passed. An anglers dream! I did manage to catch a PB on my trip - the biggest roach I've ever seen, let alone caught! We'd stopped at Burton on Trent and R.J. went off for supplies (we were getting low on Guinness and wine) so I decided to have a bit of fishing whilst I had time. I hooked on a piece of bread and my float didn't even have time to settle before it was away...unfortunately I didn't have the camera to hand to record the moment, but it was certainly way above my current PB of just over 1lb. I'd estimate it at about 1.5lb, and that's being conservative!
I managed to fish just about every day, some days more successful than others, but I enjoyed every minute. It was usually an hour or so in the morning and maybe an hour in the evening before dinner, so it was very much "chuck it and chance it", but I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Where has the month gone?

Robbie has fair grown up, hasn't he? I don't think he can be called a pup any more!
Nice action shots there.

Well done Bobj and to everyone who took the time to enter.
Sorry for the late reply, but I've only just got back after a month away. Hope you've all been behaving yourselves...

I've been away for a while, but here are a couple from me taken on our recent cruise...
I have over 2,500 pics to go through! With a bit of luck I may have about twenty that I would consider keepers!
We've had a great time cruising our inland waterways for the last month. Who needs to go abroad? I'm burnt to a cinder and seriously relaxed after a fantastic time on a narrowboat. I'm also totally knackered after over 500 miles and something like 400 locks, but I wouldn't have changed it for anything.

Woo hoo! I'm packed and ready!
Just waiting for R.J. to pick me up and then we're all systems go!
We're picking Rosemary up from Stone at about 2.00, and hoping for a quick getaway. Hopefully it'll just be a quick run-through and a reminder of all the bits and pieces and then we'll be off. We've hired this boat on two previous occasions, so we're pretty familiar with her.
Something's not quite right though...the sun's shining!
Behave yourselves whilst I'm away...I'll see you in June!

i bet its great.
You're damn right it is! We've done a narrowboat trip every year for the last ten years, and there really isn't anything quite like it! We don't worry too much about the weather - it really doesn't seem to bother us at all, although obviously it's nicer when it's warm and sunny!
On one of our trips a few years ago we were out for two weeks and it rained every single day! Still didn't put us off though! If it's sunny we have a nice barbecue on the bank. If it's been cold and rainy then we sit inside at the end of the day with a nice meal and a bottle of wine, gently glowing as the heating kicks in whilst we get that lovely feeling of time well spent and something achieved.
The long range weather forecast for May is horrible, but who cares! I finished work at 3.00 today and I'm now officially on holiday until the month after next!

Hi Janet, I hope you have a great trip, look forward to the reports written in your usual style
You must be joking John! You've seen how I can ramble after an afternoon's fishing...imagine what it would be like after a month!!!
I've started a BLOG on my canal forum, and I'll hopefully be updating it most days. There are already a few entries in there, starting with the newest first, but I'm afraid it's going to be more boating than fishing!
Janet

Steve, send me phone number again and your email address and I'll send you the full itinerary and the link to my blog. Hopefully I'll be updating it every night so you'll know where to find us.
Janet
PS. I'm sure I had your address, but I lost a lot of stuff when my computer crashed last month!

Nope, the Bridgewater is up here and we're heading down there....
Ayjay, I don't think I'll be able to fish at Hampton Court as I think it's out of season. Shame, but it will still be nice just being there, chilling out and having fun. A river barbel would be so good! Best I've had so far is a tiddler of about a pound on my club lake.
I think my fishing is going to be restricted to the canals en route. Hope it doesn't cost me too much in day tickets, as I'll only have about an hour in the morning and another hour in the evening....that's if I manage to get up early and persuade my OCM to do the cooking in the evening...

Apologies if I'm not around for the next few weeks...
I'm off for a cruise on a narrowboat on our lovely canals for a whole month...we are picking the boat up on Saturday and will be cruising our inland waterways. We are heading out from Stone in Staffordshire, down to the Thames and beyond, hopefully to return to Stone in four weeks or so...London Bridge, Tower Bridge, House of Parliament....we're even going to spend a night moored up on the visitor moorings at Hampton Court Palace...how cool is that?
I will try and post pics as I go, but if that doesn't work, expect a whole influx of canal/boat related pics when I get back! I'll also hopefully be getting lots and lots and lots of fishing in!
If you're on our route, then please make yourselves known! I'll be on a very green boat named "Rosemary" - the kettle is on a permanent boil, so you've virtually guaranteed a cuppa....

I think the diversity of subject matter on the thread rather puts me to shame.
...and I rather think that the quality of your bird shots puts us to shame also! They are excellent! I do hope you post more!
This thread is purely "Photo of the Day" - basically it's anything that takes your fancy - anything goes. They don't have to be technically perfect, and they don't have to conform to any set rules. It's not about composition, critique and technique - it's about showing pictures that mean something to you.
I find it fascinating to see what people post on here - we get the most random subjects but they are all interesting and I find that seeing them sparks off ideas for things to try myself. If it hadn't been for finding the photography forum on here, I'd still be snapping away with disposable cameras and I'd have missed all the fun I've had in recent months since I bought a "proper" camera.
For myself it's just pictures I've taken as I've been out and about. No real theme to any of them - I'm still very much in the learning stages with my Oly, so I'll shoot anything!
I'd suggest that you enter some of your images in our monthly competition (link in my signature). It only takes a moment or two to sign up and it's all very simple...I like simple!
We have some great photographers on here, but it's all been a bit quiet lately. Let's give the photography forum a kick up the backside and get it back to how it used to be!

maybe janet, lynne and emma and the other ladies might make us a calender. to raise a few pennies.
Trust me, you wouldn't like it if I was posing!
I've been fishing for a few years now, and it never ceases to amaze me how non-anglers just don't have any concept about how relaxing/thrilling it can be, in equal measure.
I've given up trying to rationalise what I do...they'll never get the point!

BTW, i could tell you the maddest thing I've ever done whilst drunk but you wouldn't believe me.....
I'm sure we would belive you, but I'm not totally sure that we'd want to!
Now, if you want to hear the maddest thing I've done whist drunk, please form an orderly queue...

I've entered one this month, but it's likely to be my one and only entry for this month's competition unless I get lucky this weekend!
I've had a horrendous few weeks, with my PC off for several repairs and no chance to upload photo's. I will try and get a couple more in before the end of the month, but it's looking doubtful.
Next weekend I'm going away for a month on holiday....yippeee! A whole month of chilling out and doing nowt but having fun and taking photo's....
Behave yourselves while I'm away, and please, please, get your entries in for the April comp.
It was a poor turnout last month - I know we can do better...I'll be back at the beginning of June to check and wield my whip if necessary!

Oops!
No, it's not dead...just a little tired...
I'll get on with it now!
I'm not sure how to close the March competition down and archive it, so I'm afraid I'll have to leave that to Steve.
Janet
PS. Finally managed to figure out how close it down!
Hooking Perch - deep hooked
in Coarse Fishing
Posted
John gave me this advice about positioning the "tell tale" shot whilst float fishing a while ago when I had the same problem with deeply hooked perch which was giving me some concern. I don't think I've had another deep hooked perch since. All have been lip hooked, even when the greedy little beggars went for bread crust...
If I had a deeply hooked perch, I wouldn't mess around with disgorgers/forceps etc. I'd simply cut the line and trust that my barbless hook would be swiftly shed. Perch may be feisty little fighters, but they are incredibly delicate and messing around with disgorgers and forceps doesn't do them any favours.
