  1. I called at the post office the other day and was told that if I purchased a licence any time this month it will still run out at the end of it and I would be required to buy another on the first of April wich would run until the first of April next year.

I was given the same advice at my local post office. They couldn't give me a licence for 1st April in advance. What sort of a system are they running?

  2. Its virtually impossible to list all the search spiders
I'm not quite sure what a search spider is, and I have no wish to find out. Anything with more than four legs is totally alien to me!

maybe they are just here fleetingly and not bothered about signing in

If they didn't sign in, wouldn't they just be classed as guests?

    Janet

  3. I've just been looking at the board statistics. As of a few moments ago, we had 190 guests, 9 members, and 6 anonymous members.

Why don't all you guests sign up, and come and join in? We don't bite you know! You'll be made welcome. I'm very new to angling, but have had lots of helpful advice.

As for our members who wish to remain anonymous.....why?

  4. our fighting men give up at the drop of a hat.

I've been working all day, and haven't seen this particular news story yet, but regardless of that, I think that comment about our brave army lads is totally out of order.

Our fighting men are fighting, and dying, every day, for a war they didn't start, and don't want to be party to, but they still do it. How many of YOU could, or would do that? I speak from experience here, as my best friend is army. He's been in Belfast, Bosnia, Falklands, Iraq etc. He's a changed man from when I first met him. He's seen things that nobody should ever have to see, but he still does it.

Please, let's just support the guys on the front line, wherever they are.

If you want to have a pop at anyone, have a go at the Government (huh!) and the politicians who put our young lads (and lasses) in the firing line, but don't say that our troops give up at the drop of a hat. They deserve a little more respect than that.

  5. Ah bless. Such deep and truly meaningful lyrics, expressing all the myriad of conflicting emotions that run through our minds during a match .... The intellectual capabilities of our football fans knows no bounds....

Yes. I know. I'll get me coat.....

  6. I'm very new to this. Only started fishing last year. Had lots of help and advice from forum members on here. I prefer canal fishing, on my local L&L canal. My favourite so far has to be my PB perch, towards the end of last summer, as well as my first chub caught a couple of weeks ago.

And what's your favourite catch Patty?

  7. methinks it was a wind up. :fishing1:

Methinks it was a wind up too, but a very funny one nevertheless... however, with the possibility that it was for real, I think the mods were right to finish it when they did. Patrizia is now a fully fledged member, so is free to continue chatting.

Shame the topic was closed, but I'm sure Patrizia will be back to continue entertaining us!

  8. keep the "magic" of the 16th alive

As a very new convert to the sport, I'm not too happy about the close season, but that's just because I've only just recently started fishing rivers, and discovering the fun to be had! I'll just go back to the canal and my local pond, and try to continue learning more about float fishing.

I'm quite happy to stay away from the river until June 16th. It's something to look forward to. A bit like Christmas when you were a kid! I've booked the weekend off work for it.

Life would be so boring if we could always do what we want, when we want.

  9. You have lovely ears. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise....

If Patrizia is playing a game, it's a good one! As you say, no harm done, and still very funny! Carry on flirting guys.

Peter, I know that women are welcome on here, and I'm very grateful for that. I've had some excellent advice (and a few offers that I've had to decline!) I thought I'd get laughed out of the place when I first started, but not so. I've had loads of help.

    You're a good lot really!

  10. Didn't do very well really, but had a great time, if that makes any sense!

I didn't get out until late afternoon, but I managed to get to all three of my usual spots on the river, over a three mile stretch, catching something each time. Nothing bigger than a chub that I'd guess was just over 2lb, several lovely shiny roach, (one of which was a real beauty), half a dozen beautiful fat brownies and a tiddly little perch. All caught on bread crust. I didn't bother weighing any of them - I gave up with that a while ago. I'm purely fishing for pleasure.

The perch wasn't even hooked - it was just hanging onto the piece of bread! Determined little beggars, aren't they!

Thoroughly enjoyed it though. The weather was absolutely glorious - more summer than winter, and it was lovely to just be there on the bank with the sun on my back, watching and waiting.

I guess it's back to the canal for me now!

  11. I've booked the day off work, to try and follow all I learnt with Martin James on our fishing day on the River Ribble the other weekend, and try and catch just one last chub before the end of the season. The girls at work think I'm mad. I think I'll have fun! They don't know what they're missing...

Got home from work tonight, and packed my bag ready for the day tomorrow. All I need to do in the morning is boil the kettle for my flask and fettle a few butties, then I'm off!

To be honest, I'm not that bothered if I don't even get a bite. I've had SUCH a good year since I started fishing. Only had one day when I didn't so much as a nibble, but it was still a good day for me. Throughout the year I've seen things that I would never have seen if I hadn't taken up angling. We do a lot of walking, but when you're just sitting quietly by the bank, you can see so much more.

I've seen a deer and her fawn early in the morning on my way to the lake. I've watched kingfishers diving into the water and catching more than me, (not difficult!), foxes and cubs playing in the fields, and most memorable for me, a little stoat running over my boots to eat my groundbait. I've seen rabbits, hares, kestrels hunting (and catching), and my favourite, a guy trying to teach his little girl how to fish. She caught a tiny gudgeon, which put up a monster of a fight. The look on her little face was very much like mine when I caught my first one (only I think hers was bigger!)

So, tomorrow, come hell or high water, I'll be out there on the banks, enjoying it.

    Where will you be?

  12. Nice site Ian, thanks. I had a good laugh reading it, but luckily I don't harbour any yearning to be a published author!

I write my little stories purely for my own pleasure, and to keep in my diary to remind me of good days. My little story today and my previous story about my day fishing for chub with Martin James was just to allow me to share some of the feel-good stuff with the guys on this forum who have helped me so much since I started angling last year. If it hadn't been for the help and advice I was given by forum members when I started, perhaps I wouldn't still be here, muddling through, and enjoying every minute.

If I start talking fishing with my friends, (none of which are even the slightest bit interested in angling) I can see their eyes beginning to glaze over with that "here she goes again" look. At least on this forum I know I'm talking to people who share the same interests, and get the same pleasure from it as I do.

  13. Glad you enjoyed it Newt. It's all true, apart from the 5lb 6oz chub! Unfortunately, all the little bits of it happened on different days throughout the year.

Still, it would have been a good day, wouldn't it?

  14. I woke early this morning, roused by the light streaming in through the gap in the curtains, and the medley of birdsong from my resident blackbird. Yawning and stretching, I lay there for a moment or two before finally remembering that no, I didn’t have to get up for work. This was Sunday, a day off from work, and I was going FISHING!

There was a quiet knock on my bedroom door, which opened to reveal my son, bringing me a cup of coffee before he left for work. “Don’t worry about dinner Mum”, he said, “I’m finishing early, so I’ll cook tonight”. WOW! What a result, and I hadn’t even got out of bed! My son is a chef at a local pub/restaurant, but he works silly hours, so we don’t often get to eat together.

I lay back and relaxed for a few moments, then quickly got myself up, showered and dressed for a day on the bank. I’d sorted all my tackle out the previous night, so all I needed to do was rustle up a couple of sandwiches, make myself a flask of tea, then head off down to the river. I’d planned this day for weeks – I was going to enjoy every minute of it!

It’s a couple of miles from home to my favourite stretch of river, but it’s a nice stroll through green fields and unspoilt woodland. As I walked along the country lane, I noticed the verges were dotted with nodding daffodils and the trees were bearing opening buds. Pussy willow was in abundance, hedges were showing signs of new shoots, and I saw several squirrels running along the fences and looking at me from their perches in the trees, as if to say “What’s SHE doing here at this time in the morning?”

As I approached the end of the lane and the beginning of the woodland walk, I spotted a deer moving between the trees. I stood still for several minutes, watching in silent admiration as it wandered through the woodland, oblivious to my presence. I know we have deer in our woods, but it isn’t often you get to see one. You have to be up very early, and be very quiet to be in with a chance.

Moving on, I carried on down the lane, taking a bit of time to watch a fox and cubs playing by a hawthorn hedge. The mother fox was totally alert, ears twitching and eyes darting from side to side, watching for any signs of danger to her precious brood, but the cubs were totally oblivious, rolling and tumbling in their play-fighting. Unfortunately a sudden sneeze from me sent them back undercover.

Arriving on the banks, I saw a lovely low sun rising over the horizon, a slight mist on the water and wished I’d remembered to pack my camera! I remembered the advice I’d been given previously, so wasn’t in a huge rush to start fishing. I walked to the top of the stretch, looking for likely spots, and at each one, threw in a bit of mashed bread, before heading back to my starting point and pouring myself a nice cuppa. I assembled my new rod (I was positively itching to try it out!), and walked up-river for a while, to the first patch that I’d seen.

Positioning my rod rest in the bank, I baited my hook with a big chunk of bread crust, and cast low and long. On the first cast I managed to get snagged in the tree, but managed to break free again and cast across the river again, avoiding the overhanging branches by inches. I didn’t have to wait long. It was only a matter of minutes until the rod tip bent round savagely and I was then into a real fight with what I just KNEW was a good fish. Several times it took line, and headed for cover under the trees, trying to dive into the twisted and gnarled underwater roots, but each time I was just able to bring it back and keep it out of the snags until eventually I guided it over the rim of my net to see a beautiful chub looking a bit miffed at being caught. It weighed in at 5lb 6oz. What a good start!

As I began to congratulate myself on a fabulous start to the day and bait up again for another cast, I heard a sudden noise….

Yes. You guessed it. My alarm clock….well, I did say it was a dream of a day, didn’t I?

  15. I didn't know him, but he sounds like quite a guy, who will no doubt be sorely missed by many. Maybe we should all take a bit of time to reflect on the friends we have, and appreciate them a bit more, because as you've just shown in your post, they won't always be with us.

You can't take anything for granted in this life.

  16. this is only a fishing forum, a place where we can swap ideas, casually chat and enjoy each others input, it's not the centre of the universe. Life's too short to fall out over this sort of thing. It's always sad to see people leave the forum, but if it's their wish, then so be it. Lets all take stock and move on.

    How very well said!
