  1. I thoroughly recommend this book. It's simply captivating from start to finish.

I was lucky enough to meet up with the author on a fishing trip on the River Ribble a while back, and he's as solid and down to earth as they come...it was a real pleasure to meet up with him and hear some of his experiences.

The last I heard from him he was working on a second book...

  2. A great first post Ben, and welcome to AN!

A big carp swam up to my swim along the reeds then dived. A great sight while trying to remember how to create a half blood knot!

I think there's a clue there, with the carp cruising in your swim...!

The big fish, or any fish, don't always sit 40 feet out waiting for you to ambush them...

I never fish much more than a rod's length from the bank, and consistently outfish the guys on our lake! They laugh at me, whilst they're casting out into the far distance and they see me fishing under my rod tip...I get lots of what they appear to think are very amusing comments when I cast out more than a few feet...

However, nine times out of ten I'll have the last laugh!

I find that particularly at the start and end of the day, the big fish tend to mooch around the margins...possibly mopping up left over bait, possibly just thinking it's safe? Who knows? However, that's where I've always had the most success.

Why do fish like fruity baits? When I went to the tackle shop I saw pineapple pellets etc and didnt quite understand it.

The tackle shops would have us believe anything! Many of them aren't interesting in catching fish, just catching anglers, and we do appear to be easy to hook!

I can only speak from my own experience, but maggots, casters, worm and bread are always consistently good baits for most fish. Luncheon meat on occasions, but as for the fruity/spicy overpriced and overhyped stuff? Don't waste your money...

I stand by to be corrected!

  3. I couldn't get to grips with Gimp, so I bought Elements 7 and can thoroughly recommend it. It's not the easiest of programs to use with no documentation, but I think I've finally cracked it!

As it isn't provided with a manual, I bought a book, "Brilliant Photoshop Elements 7", which is still sitting on my bookshelf, unread!

I got there in the end by trial and error...

  4. everyone knows all the best anglers sport beards .

Yes, and they also seem to use them to store their spare bait!

I've yet to meet a bearded angler that didn't look as though there was something nesting in there... ;)

  5. Chesters, I really do think you've "lost the plot" with this one...either that or you're being deliberately obtuse and provocative and trolling for comments and attention....nothing new there then?

the web is the world theres no need to set foot outside your door.

Please continue to take your medication and contribute when you have something sensible to add to the topic. You really can be tiresome at times, with your ill-conceived and random rants.

The web isn't the world....there's a whole REAL world out there, just waiting to be explored. I'd hate mine to be limited by your prejudices...there is such a thing as an open mind, but yours appears to be closed to anything that's outside your comfort zone...

At present you are coming across as a rather ignorant and xenophobic pillock...

Oh well, that's your choice, but you are missing out on so much that our world has to offer.

  6. I'm half way through a 19 day week

    Respect that man!

    I'm here...sort of!

Keeping a low profile after reading Elton's lens posts...

I feel the urge and am trying to restrain myself!

  7. Do as we did and cruise up the Thames from Limehouse to Teddington on a boat...

We managed to avoid all the tourist traps, but still saw all the sights.

Tower Bridge, Houses of Parliament, London Eye etc...didn't cost us a penny

Get your avatar printed onto a t-shirt and hang around Buckingham Palace!

    That could prove interesting!

  8. Is it time for the answer yet?

In your own good time, but NOW would be good?

Just a suggestion before I send down a curse including fleas, camels and your nether regions...

  9. Just for fun! Seen in a model railway display cabinet at the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.

Train sets were never like this when I were a nipper!

  10. Part of the wing of a Purple Emperor?

    Zijin Mountain?

Failing that, it's a close up of the arm of your purple crushed velvet smoking jacket as you hold your arm out in some weird satanic ritual...

    Give us a clue!

  11. If I had more time I'd probably try a moth trap of an evening, instead of just letting them into the kitchen, like this one last year.

Ayjay, what is that moth? It's beautiful!

  12. I work for a local Council, and we've certainly seen a huge increase in the numbers of wasp nests reported this year.

    Flies and rats also....

that one is destined for bait

Bait? I'd love to hear more!

It used to be so simple....
