  1. I get some strange looks when I'm out fishing on my own - which is all the time, as I don't know anyone else who's into fishing.

I was fishing a pond at a local National Trust property the other weekend, and a group of American tourists said "How quaint - a lady fisherman!"

Quaint? I've been called some things in my time, but that's a first!

  2. Well done Anderoo. Nice one.

I too caught a reasonable perch yesterday - all of 1lb 6oz. May not be huge, but as a complete novice, immensely satisfying.

I'd sat there all day with only two fish to speak of when I caught it. I was beginning to think I wasn't going to catch anything else at all.

What a bristling, indignant, bad tempered little fish it was too - but an absolute beauty. It came to the net fighting all the way, then sat and glowered at me with that look that only perch have. The markings and colouration were the brightest I'd seen.

I'm sure I'll catch bigger and better fish as I progress, but nothing for me will beat catching a perch.

  3. If the canals aren't kept open and used by boaters (and anglers!), how long do you think they'd survive before being filled in and built over for new housing and yet another Tesco or Sainsbury? I think we all have a duty to help keep as many of our waterways as possible open so we and our children and generations to come can enjoy them. Once they've gone, a part of our heritage is gone too.

I'm one of the first to understand the delights of a disused canal. We recently visited the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal, and it was idyllic, though disused. On our narrowboat holiday in May this year we cruised the Birmingham and Fazely canal. The water was crystal clear. Nearly grounded the boat several times watching the fish! The northern end of the navigable part of the Lancaster Canal is also another beauty spot, well used by both boaters and anglers.

Yes, some of the canals are busy with boats, but is it not in ALL our interests to share the waterways and keep them open, clean and available as a valuable resource for the future? The Huddersfield Narrow Canal would be nothing but an empty muddy ditch by now if it hadn't been restored and kept open for boat traffic. At least it's still there, still being used, and by the way - it's full of fish!

  4. To suggest that boaters are the only rightful users of the canal network is a bit like saying that a disused motorway should be turned into a pony and trap run because it was designed for wheeled vehicles.

Apologies - perhaps I didn't make myself clear. My view is that the canals are a valuable resource for both anglers, boaters and other users. I didn't mean to imply that I felt they were only for boaters.

  5. "Either way, if the canals fall into disrepair, is there an angler in the country who would nourn the absence of a few boats?"

Comments like that really make my blood boil!

I'm a boater as well as an angler. We take a narrowboat holiday for two weeks every year, and have our own dinghy, fully licenced and insured, which we use regularly. I also pay for my rod licence, so I feel I contribute a lot to the upkeep of canals.

Are we not in danger of forgetting just WHY canals were built in the first place? For boat traffic!

The money boaters pay in licence fees etc goes towards the upkeep of canals and waterways.

Can't we all live in harmony, and respect other users, whether boaters, walkers or anglers? There is room for all of us to enjoy the waterways with a bit of give and take, and no need to re-ignite the old boater versus angler argument. It doesn't do any of us any good.

  6. I contacted Martin James when I first decided to take up angling a couple of months ago, looking for advice on local angling clubs etc. I was struggling to get the info I needed as I don't know anyone else who fishes.

What a real gent he is. He not only gave me loads of good advice to get me started, but is taking me out on the River Ribble to try and get me my first chub, as soon as his schedule allows.

For anyone who hasn't tuned in before - his programmes are excellent.

  7. It's not the most picturesque spot, being in the middle of town, but it's not too bad down on the banks. Have a small beach to fish from, lots of trees and greenery, and provided you blank out the traffic noise from the bridge, it's pretty good really.

It wouldn't be my area of choice, but the main advantage is that it's just a two minute walk from home. I don't drive, so it's not so easy finding good locations.

The disadvantage is the teenage yobs thinking it's amusing to pelt anglers from the bridge with whatever comes to hand. Don't you just love 'em?

  9. where are all the interesting fishing threads?

There are still a few around. Del R posted a very entertaining one this morning. I hope more follow his example and remind us all what fishing is all about.

I'm relatively new to this forum, and to fishing. I've had some great advice from various members, but I'm also getting fed up with polls & politics.

  10. I don't know about barbel, but it seems to be teeming with trout, chub, roach, perch and the occasional sea trout and salmon, which have been seen jumping up the weir.

There are also some large carp and pike. I was lucky enough to land my first carp of about 2 pounds on Sunday, but when I went down yesterday, someone had just had one of about six pounds. Mine may have been only a tiddler compared to some of the ones I read about on here, but it put up one heck of a fight. Great fun. I'm sure I'll catch bigger in the future, but I'll not forget my first one.

It's amazing that there is all this going on in the middle of our little town, just two minutes walk from my house.
