  1. try areas where the current is slow or where there's a 'crease' between fast and slow water, and where there's some cover like trees, reeds, bridges, weed, etc.

This describes exactly where I was. Right next to a bridge, with deep, slow moving water. The guy who caught the chub was sitting right next to me, so I know the fish are there. I'll take all the advice about changing bait, and see how I get on.

And Steve, you're dead right - the canal doesn't seem as attractive after the day I had on Sunday - and the bonus is that the river is right at the end of the street where I live!

  2. I was chuffed to bits with it. Still am! I doubt I'll catch one as big again.

I'm glad I had some witnesses and photographic proof, or my son would never have believed me. I think he's now resigned to the fridge being full of maggots and worms!

Can't wait to get out on the river again this weekend.

  3. Just a word of thanks for you guys on here who've been giving me advice as an absolute beginner to fishing.

Having now got a little more confidence, I decided to switch from the canal to the river. Result - a beautiful 3lb 4oz brown trout (my biggest weighed fish to date) and my very first carp - a perfect little mirror at about 2 pounds. I was lucky to be joined by another angler, who was very helpful, but not altogether pleased that I was catching more than him! I just couldn't stop pulling in trout - most of them between two and three pounds. I'm assuming from this that trout are easy to catch on maggot, not that I'm getting any better at fishing!

The large trout put up a terrific fight, leaping out of the water and streaking downstream It was absolutely fantastic! I think I may have to reassess my love of the canal, as it was so much more exciting down on the river. At one point I hooked into something really big - it just set off downstream, slowly and gently, then gradually speeded up. We both watched in amazement as it just shot off like a rocket. It just snapped my 6lb line like it was cotton. We never saw what it was, but needless to say, we'll both be trying to get it next week! His guess is a large carp. I think it was a great white shark!

Anyway - thanks again for all your help, and please can you help again?

I know there are some large chub in the river - I watched a real beauty being landed. Any advice as to what I should try to catch one of these instead of the trout? And please - keep it simple if you could?

  4. Well, I sat there all day (and I mean ALL day - from 6.30am to just after 7pm!) and caught nothing but perch. One tiddler after another - none more than 3" long. I think perhaps it was the same one who had volunteered for suicide duty to give the rest a break!

Still, I'm not complaining, because towards the end of the day I caught a magnificent 10" long perch (didn't have any scales to weigh it so I had to measure it instead!) Absolutely beautiful! Put up a cracking fight, and came out of the water spitting and bristling at me. Made my day, and made all the waiting worthwhile.

The last couple of hours I kept getting bites, lots of them, but for some reason, couldn't hook them. Of the few I did get, four managed to shake the hook free, and the only one I landed was my big perch. I've only had this happen to me a couple of times during my canal fishing sessions, so wonder if perhaps I'm doing something wrong or have I just been lucky up to now?

I spoke to another angler as I was leaving, who said that the lake had a reputation of being notoriously difficult to fish, which made me feel a bit better, but I'd still like to know why I didn't do better. using the same equipment as I do on the canal. Any ideas guys?

  5. I would imagine they'll grow biggest in larger still waters.

Well I hope they don't grow too big in the lake I'm fishing tomorrow!

I've been putting off going there as I know there are some large carp in there, and I don't feel I have the confidence or the ability yet to safely landing anything too big. I suppose that will come with time and practice.

  6. I only had my kitchen scales to weigh them on, and they weighed one at 1lb 1oz, and the other at just a fraction under 1lb. I do have some fishing scales, but to be honest, I haven't been catching anything big enough to warrant using them yet.

And yes, I was made up. They were the two biggest I'd caught so far. Do they grow bigger on the river than the canal? They also seemed to fight a lot harder.

To be honest, I'm made up with whatever I catch - it's all still very much a novelty. One of my best days was spent catching nothing but gudgeon. To me they're ALL good, but it's early days yet!

  7. Thanks for all your advice. Didn't catch an awful lot, but had a lot of fun doing it!

Andrew - the white water was good, really enjoyed it, but it was very snaggy. Kept fooling me into thinking I had a bite. Mind you, when I did, it was a cracker - a lovely brown trout. Very tempting to take it home for dinner, but it put up such a fight I thought it deserved to go back and live to fight another day.

GlennB - I followed your advice too, and found the slack water. A couple of nice roach there. Only about 1lb in weight, if that, but very nice nevertheless. They put up one heck of a fight!

Had a great time, and was well pleased with the three I caught, as I was only there for just over an hour before it started to get dark. At the moment I think I prefer float fishing on the canal, but I'm going to keep going to the river though, as I'm sure I'll enjoy it more when I get a bit more confidence.

Tomorrow I'm going to fish a local lake. I haven't tried that before, as I thought it best to practice on smaller fish first till I had a clue what I was doing. I've heard there are some big fish in it! I went up for a walk last night just to have a look round, and it looks perfect. Not too large, very scenic, and best of all, just 20 minutes walk from my home. There was nobody there, on what was a perfect night, with fish rolling all over the surface, so at least I'll be able to make my mistakes with nobody watching me!

  8. Hi guys,

Well, I had planned to go down to the river tonight armed with the information I got yesterday, but I noticed this morning that it's about a foot over it's usual level, and very muddy looking after all yesterday's rain.

My question is, is it still worth trying with these conditions? I've never fished a river before.

    Thanks!

  9. Thanks for that, both of you. I will stick with the maggots & worms for the time being then. It's daunting enough without complicating things for myself. I think my son will be glad when I switch to something else, as he keeps finding them in the fridge. Comes home from the pub late at night looking for bacon and finds my maggots!

Unfortunately I don't know anyone else who fishes, but I'm not doing too badly at the moment. Learning a lot from this site, and then going out and trying to put it into practice. It seems quite simple on the canal, and I'm catching quite well, but the river is a different kettle of fish.

Still, I've got nothing to lose, so I'm heading off down there after work tomorrow and see how I get on.

  10. As a newcomer to the sport, I've only caught trout, bream, rudd, perch and roach, so I've a lot to learn, but my favourite would have to be perch.

Feisty, tough, bad tempered arrogant little beggars. These fish have real attitude! Don't think I could ever get tired of catching them.

    Janet

  11. Would you recommend any particular bait?

    Janet

PS. I know what you mean about the smell of the weir, and the fantastic sound too.

I've sat daydreaming in this spot for the past few years. Lovely!

  12. Hi guys,

I've only recently started fishing, and have been sticking to the canal where I can make my mistakes without anyone watching (I'm learning by trial and error as I have nobody to teach me - learnt most of it off this site!) Due to work I can only get there once a week, but as I've well land truly been bitten with the fishing bug, I want to get out more.

Just ten minutes walk from my home is the River Calder, with a small weir. It's not very deep, but I know it holds lots of brown trout, and I've also been told of chub, roach and perch. I'm looking for some advice as to how I should go about fishing here.

Should I try the slower water above the weir, or go for the tempting looking white water below? I really don't care what I catch, but I could do with a few pointers as to what method to use, and where to try.

    Thanks guys!

    Janet

  13. Great idea for a complete beginner like me! I only started fishing for the first time back in July, and have been struggling to teach myself as I don't know anyone else who goes fishing. It's a bit of an uphill battle, but you guys on here have been a great help. I'm actually catching fish now!

    Hope you get some volunteers.

  14. I only started fishing for the first time back in July this year, and was asked for my licence on my very first trip to the river!

I'd bought my rod only two hours earlier and paid for my licence over the phone. Very glad I did too!

  15. Good afternoon guys,

I'm going off for a weekend camping and boating trip to Chester, and hope to get some fishing in on the River Dee. I'm a complete novice, having only started a few weeks ago, and my experience so far is confined to canals.

Can any of you offer any advice as to what I should be trying to catch, and how?

    Janet

PS - not too much jargon please! I'm still learning and easily confused!!!

  16. the line will pull out of the platacine and not get snapped.

Brilliant bit of advice Phil. Thanks!

I went over to Gargrave on the Leeds Liverpool this weekend, and think I did pretty well for only my second attempt. Only managed to get a couple of hours fishing in before we took the boat out, but managed 13 fish in total, including a 12" long bream and a couple of large perch and rudd. I haven't any scales to weigh them, so I took a tape measure!

I did have a lot of trouble with small fish though - I don't mind catching them small, as I need to learn, but these were taking the mick! Any ideas on how to avoid hooking the little 'uns?

  17. One day I'm going to buy myself one of those Portabote thingys cos I know just where one of those monster Pike you're talking about in the Aire lies.....

Do it - go get a boat! We bought an inflatable dinghy and an outboard from Preston Marina, and have had brilliant days on it. It all fits (just!) in the boot of the car, and takes minutes to inflate and get in the water. It's very rigid, and fits three people plus bags etc.

    Janet

  18. Thanks for that! We've found a campsite right on the canal near Gargrave, but we'll be travelling up and down a bit, as we're taking our dinghy and outboard,

I'll be able to see where the fish are so I know where to fish! Cheating?

  19. Good afternoon guys,

We're planning a weekend camping and boating trip this weekend, over at Gargrave, near Skipton. Does anyone know who has the fishing rights to this area of the canal?

Cheers - I know someone out there will have the answer!
