  1. River Kennet - Newbury 0930 - 1345 Bright and cold start, clouding over. AT no higher than 5ºC all day. River at normal autumn levels (actually slightly up on some previous autumns) and carrying a LOT of leaf litter. 4 Chub: 3lb 4oz, 3lb 1oz, 2lb 13oz, 2lb 10oz. 5 Grayling; Best 1lb 3oz. 13 Dace (quite a few in the 6-8oz bracket), 5 Roach and 5 small brownies. A morning's trotting in the cold - this venue is starting to return to it's old productive self (just need some barbel to show!)
  2. River Kennet - Hambridge 0900 - 1200 Bright and sunny after a frosty start, had to scrape ice off the car which was a shock to the system after a week away in Lanzarote! River up a touch and with a bit of colour. 6 Chub; Best 2, 4lb 15oz & 3lb 14oz all the others between 1¼lb - 2lb 6oz. 10 Dace - with 4 in the 8-10oz bracket, 2 Roach, 3 Brownies - all over 1lb - biggest nearer 2. Cracking little trotting session was hoping for a chub or 2 so to get half a dozen was great. Was intending to rove the whole section - but ended up just fishing one swim.
  3. River Kennet - Brimpton 0615 - 1300 Overcast and quite breezy at times - drizzly rain for first hour. River not as low as I expected. 2 Chub: 5lb 6oz, 4lb 13oz. 7 Dace, 1 Roach, ½doz+ brownies - most quite small with one circa 1lb. Took a ledgering rod As I wanted to have a daytime try for a barbel - however they were removing willows just upstream and an absurd amount of branches and crap coming downstream made it impossible. So back to usual trotting tactics for a lovely brace of chub.
  4. River Kennet - Marsh Benham 0600 - 1300 Cool (6ºC when I arrived) and sunny - with a nippy northerly breeze. River lower than my last visit 4 weeks ago. 1½doz+ Chub, Biggest 3lb 5oz, the rest all chublets. 1 Pike; 3lb 10oz, 2doz+ Roach, 5 Dace (2 of around 8oz), 1 Perch, 1 Bleak, 1 Gudgeon. Ledgered meat for the first couple of hours or so - 45 minutes each in 3 different swims - but the only pull resulted in a meat munching pike again - possibly the same one that I had here last month! Nice to see so many chublets in the river - augurs well for the chub population in the future.
  5. River Kennet - Brimpton 0530 - 1130 Hot and sultry. AT 19ºC when I left home at 0445! River still seeing the benefits of a wet spring. 6 Chub: 4lb 3oz, 4lb 0oz, 3lb 14oz, 3lb 10oz, 3lb 9oz, 3lb 2oz. 10 Dace - 4 over 8oz - best 10oz. 10 Brownies - mostly small - with 3 over lb. Lovely morning'c chubbing - the more so as I spent most of it up to my thighs in cool Kennet water. Nice stamp of fish which came from 3 separate swims. As ever, these days the trout were a bit of a pain - often killing a swim with their antics when hooked.
  6. Middle Kennet Estate Water - Kintbury. 0700 - 1800 (!) Mainly overcast though mild with a strong southerly breeze. River 'full' with a little colour - in great winter nick. 25 Chub(!): Apart from 4 X1lb class fish which turned up in my various 'dace' swims at first and last knockings, all 3lb class fish. 3 over 4lb @ 4lb 14oz, 4lb 6oz & 4lb 1oz. 6 Dace - one decent fish of 10oz. 4 Roach - including one @ 12oz. 1 Gudgeon (possibly my first ever from here!). A dozen brownies to 3lb. End of season chub fest - part 2! A very blowy day in West Berkshire! All bigger chub on trotted red corn - got through 3 tins of the stuff - and ran out by mid-afternoon! - All lovely brassy fish - though at times the fishing was of Mr Castwell proportions (yet another 3lb chub!). Was hoping to find some big dace and having a pound chub show up got the heart racing at first until I saw it. What dace I did catch had clearly just spawned. Tried half -heartedly for perch - but visited that particular swim to pay my respects to Paul - who's ashes were buried nearby.....
  7. Kennet Carrier (& main river!) Marsh Benham 0700 - 1600 Mild and becalmed. River quite high up nearly a foot on my last visit in Jan. 14 Chub; 11 over 1lb - best 3lb 12oz, 30+Roach, 6 Dace, a dozen + Brownies to 3lb. End of season bash part 1!! Again invited Rusty to join me on my syndicate bit of river - and he actually caught some chub this time! Also got to meet some other members - first time I've met another angler here!
  8. River Kennet - Brimpton 0730 - 1000 Bright and sunny after a foggy start - mild. River quite full with a bit of colour - in lovely winter 'nick'. 3 Chub; 4lb 2oz, 3lb 14oz, 3lb 5oz. 1 Brownie. Breakfast on the river for some fine winter's chub then home to cook the Sunday roast for Mother's Day.
  9. River Kennet - Brimpton 0800 - 1100 Cold and bright after a cloudy start. AT around 1ºC but felt MUCH colder in a biting NE wind - should think the wind chill was sub zero! . River 'full' and quite clear. 2 Chub 3lb 7oz & 2lb 8oz. I Brownie of 2lb. Chilly morning after the chub - and bites were at a premium - so very happy to winkle a couple out! Fished 3 swims and had both chub from the last one visited.
  10. Kennet Carrier (& main river!) Marsh Benham 0900 - 1500 Cool, calm and mainly overcast. AT around 6ºC all day. River a couple of inches lower on my last visit over Christmas - with most of the colour dropped out. 8 Chub; 5 over 1lb - best 3lb 2oz, 2 doz+ Roach, 4 Dace - to 8oz & 4 Perch (all small). (NO trout - bit of a first for here!) Birthday treat with Rusty as my guest. Low water meant chub were a little on the spooky side - only found one swim where I caught more than one in succession. Roach were in abundance as always - just as well as Rusty had a frustrating time losing chub!
  11. River Kennet - Brimpton 1200 - 1545 Mild (10ºC) and overcast with drizzly rain for first hour or so. River up a touch and carrying a bit of colour. 5 Chub; 4lb 12oz. 4lb 10oz, 4lb 6oz, 3lb 14oz, 3lb 3oz. Cracking afternoon's chubbing and a very satisfactory start to 2018. All fish in lovely winter condition and a superb average size ( 5 fish for over 20lb) though in truth I was hoping to re-acquainted myself with one (or both!) of the 5lbers I had from here back in the summer! Fished 3 swims in rotation - had fish from all of them - with 2 coming after swim's being rested.
  12. Kennet Carrier (& main river!) Marsh Benham 0900 - 1600 Cold and sunny with snow on the ground from yesterday max temp 4ºC (briefly!). River up a couple of inches on last visit here (Nov) and carrying a little colour. 7 Chub: 4lb 5oz, 3lb 6ox, 2lb 11oz, 2lb 8oz, 2lb 0oz and 2 sub 1lbers. A dozen+ dace to 10oz, 4 dozen+ roach - most hand sized or bigger! 4 Brownies and a rainbow - all 2-3lb. Chubbing in the snow - loverly! This venue really comes into its own in the winter months and it didn't disappoint! Most chub in the first hour - then spent most of the day trying to find some bigger (ie 1lb+) roach and whilst they came thick and fast with a LOT of fish in the 6-8 oz class I only caught one which warranted the scales but that was still 3oz shy of a pound. Cracking sport none the less.
  13. River Kennet - Brimpton 0730 - 1230 Cool, bright and breezy after a showery start. River low despite recent rains. 2 Chub: 5lb 1oz, 4lb 0oz. A dozen brownies to 2½lb. 1 bleak! Lovely brace of chub caught from the same swim (the 2nd and bigger fish after resting it for 90 mins). Trout were a bit of a pain!
  14. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 0500 - 0830 Cool (9/10ºC), clear and misty. River up a couple of inches. 3 Chub: 4lb 15oz, 2lb 14oz, 1lb 8oz. 20 Dace and half a dozen brownies to circa 1lb. Pre breakfast trotting trip - and another fine chub from here - and many of the dace were a good size too - biggest I put on the scales went 10oz with another ½ doz not much smaller.
  15. Northcroft Stream 0445 - 0715 Warm (19ºC when I packed up) and overcast. 2 Chub 3lb 15oz & 1½lb. 2 doz + dace, 6 roach and 6 gudgeon. Pre breakfast trotting trip - mainly after the chub - though I did hear of a few barbel coming out on the float from here last summer - which would have made a very nice bonus - alas not to be! Nearly all the silver fish from the weirpool - both chub further downstream.
  16. River Kennet - Nr Thatcham 0445 - 1200 Hot! 17º at 0430 when I left the house 31º when I got home. River quite coloured as it always is in summer and at near normal summer levels. 7 Chub: 5lb 10oz, 5lb 4oz, 4lb 7oz, 4lb 2oz, 3lb 14oz, 3lb 8oz, 2lb 15oz. 4 Dace, 2 Grayling, 10 Brownies - half over 1lb to 1lb 9oz. Standing in the middle of the Kennet watching the sunrise on a warm, still June morning whilst trotting under the far bank trees - what's not to love! Chub we're very much the target today so that boxed got well and truly ticked - a brace of 5lbers was way more than I could have expected - though the bigger one was very hollow - sure to be a 6 in the winter! Was hoping to get amongst the dace a bit more but the trout were a bit of a nuisance at times - more so for jumping and trashing swims! Fished 7 swims in total - none of which had seen an angler in the opening week - jungle fishing - the first one had head high nettles! A brace of 5's
  17. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0700 - 1500 Mild and overcast. AT 14ºC. River at normal levels. 4 Chub; 4lb 3oz, 3lb 11oz, 3lb 3oz, 2lb 13oz. 5 Dace, 3 Roach, 4 Brownies - 2 'pounders' and 2 parrs. Kennet chub-fest part 2! 3 of the chub caught in the first hour which took the pressure off somewhat so went exploring - with little reward. Had quite a few lobs to use up but none of the usual perch haunts produced so much as a bite. Ended up in a swim where I caught my first ever 3lb+ perch (in 1999) but have rarely fished it since. This did at least produce my 4th chub of the day plus a couple of semi-respectable roach.
  18. Middle Kennet Estate - Kintbury 0645 - 1815 Bright and sunny - cloudy for final couple of hours. AT up to 14ºC. River at near normal levels. 19 Chub; 17 over 2lb (14 over 3!), Best 6: 4lb 9oz, 4lb 7oz, 4lb 4oz, 4lb 2oz, 3lb 14oz, 3lb 12oz. Circa 60lb of chevins! 12 Dace; Best 2 11 & 10oz. 12 Roach (all small), 10 Brownies to 3lb. End of season chub-fest on this lovely corner of West Berkshire in the company of Rusty. All chub from just 3 spots and all on trotted red corn (plus a couple of chublets on maggot). Fished on into dusk hoping for a big dace as per last year - but only managed to significantly up my trout tally in the final hour - oh hum. A wonder if Mr otter as been worrying the chub - about a third of the fish I caught had bite out of their tail fins! A couple of pics of damaged chub - both 4lbers...
  19. River Kennet - Thatcham 0815 - 1415 Mild and overcast. AT up to a very balmy 16ºC when I packed up. River quite pacey and clear. 4 Chub; 4lb 0oz, 3lb 11oz, 2lb 11oz, 2lb 8oz, 3 Grayling, 1 Dace. Fished 2 venues - one immediately downstream of the other - though different clubs - and had a brace of chub from each. All the grayling were quite chunky - in the 12-14oz class.
  20. Northcroft Stream 0700 to 0930 Mild and cloudy with sun breaking through. River up a bit but with very little colour. 5 Chub: 4lb 1oz, 3lb 2oz, 2lb14oz, 2lb 9oz, 2lb 6oz. 1 Perch. Last minute change of plan which paid off handsomely! Had intended to fish much further downstream but hadn't reckoned on ¾in of rain yesterday and reasoned that the river below Newbury/Thatcham might be coloured up. 2 chub from the weirpool - (which had a salmon in it trying to jump the gauge weir!!!!) and 3 chub including the 4lber from my favoured chub swim further downstream... River Lambourn - Shaw 0945 - 1130 7 Grayling.
  21. Middle Kennet Estate - Nr Newbury 0800 - 1600 Overcast with drizzle at times becoming increasingly windy. AT 10ºC. River very low. 14 Chub: Biggest 4lb 9oz. 2 Dace: - 1 a real lump of 12oz. 4 Roach. A doz+ Rainbows - all 2-2½lb & a couple of small Brownies. A day playing avoid the trout - which was difficult as they appeared to be sharing the same swims as the chub! Did eventually find a couple of swims with fewer of the menaces - which produced the big dace and the biggest chub of the day.
  22. Northcroft Stream - Newbury 0730 - 1030 Cool and overcast. AT 3-5ºC. River very low and clear. 3 Chub; 3lb 11oz, 3lb 7oz, 2lb 2oz. 6 Perch (all small), 4 Dace & a 2lb+ Brownie. A morning travelling very light - most fish from the weirpool.
  23. Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington 0715 - 1215 Cool, and overcast. AT 6º -> 9ºC. WT 11.4ºC 6 Perch to 1lb 12oz (3 over lb). 3 Chub; all over 1lb - best 4lb 5oz. 15 Roach, 4 Dace, 1 Bream (circa 1½lb). Pleasant morning on this rather remote part of the canal - started off on lobs which accounted for all the perch and one of the chub. Switched to maggot for the last couple of hours hoping to snaffle some decent roach as per last autumn here - no big red fins but the 4lb chub was adequate compensation!
  24. River Kennet - Newbury 1730 - 2230 Warm, overcast and breezy - with annoying light drizzle to finish! River quite low. 4 Chub; 3lb 0oz, 2lb 2oz and a couple of pounders. 14 Roach - with around half in the 8-10oz bracket, 3 Dace. A cracking hours trotting, followed by incessant crayfish activity! Had intended to stay longer but the drizzle was being blown in under the brolly and I was starting to get very damp!
  25. River Kennet - Newbury 0430 - 0800 Cool and overcast - but dry. River surprisingly high with some colour. 4 Chub; 3lb 2oz, 2lb 10oz and a couple of fish circa 1½lb, 13 Dace, 2 Grayling, 2 brownies So begineth another season - I have been umming a ahing over whether or not to continue with this blog - but someone asked if I was and I said yes so will carry on for the time being - pity the view counter's been broken for months - was hoping to celebrate 1M views by now! This was just a short trotting session before the main event at Marsh Farm later in the day. Nice to see some chub in residence and the grayling put on a good disguise - I thought they were small barbel by the way they fought - alas I thing of the past from this stretch - still nice to see grayling approaching a pound coming out. First Chub of the Season:
