Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 0700 - 1430 Mild, overcast and becalmed - perfect perching weather - pity no one told the perch! 5 Chub to 2lb 2oz. 1 Perch - small, 8 Roach - with a couple needing the net - both just shy of 12oz. 4 Gudgeon & 2 Bleak. Another frustrating day on the canal - this time I had incessant boat traffic to contend with - had hoped to get at least a couple of hours peace but the first boat came through at 0710 when it was still nearly dark! and thereafter it was constant all morning - can't believe it's this busy in the height of summer! So no interest at all from the stripeys, in a swim that proved a bit of a banker last winter, with just the occasional chub (and roach!) snaffling my lobs.

Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington 0700 - 1400 Mild and VERY gusty with drizzle for the first couple of hours or so (lovely - not!) 1 doz+ perch - most around to 10-12oz mark but couldn't find anything bigger (which what I was after primarily). 2 doz+ roach nothing big), 1 Gudgeon (1st of the season), 1 Dace, 1 Chublet and a Skimmer. 'Orrible session! Wind was a nightmare for casting and presentation (and nearly knocked me off my feet twice). Fished half a dozen or so swims in search of a decent perch and pretty much had similar results from all of them - though at the last place I tried they were slightly bigger so might start here next time. I truth though it was a bit of a 'I'll be glad when I've had enough of this session' !! as the wind made for very difficult conditions - my wrist was sore from holding the rod against it - as it was straight downstream.

Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1330 - 1700 Still mild with milky sunshine - clouding over and quite breezy. 9 Perch; 5 over 1lb - 2lb 1oz, 2lb 0oz, 1lb 13oz, 1lb 12oz, 1lb 3oz with a couple more just shy of 1lb. 1 Chub 3lb 1oz, 1 Roach; 14oz. 3 Pike - all between 2-3lb Can't get enough of a good thing at this water atm! Pike were a bit of a pain forcing me eventually to move swims - which resulted in the chub and the roach - both caught on whole lobs.

K&A Canal - Woolhampton 1500 - 1730 Bright and sunny. Mild - 16ºC 4 Perch; 3 over 1lb - biggest 1lb 14oz Another successful dusk session for stripeys - though the biggest one was caught well before the sun had sank below the trees....
-
K&A Canal, Woolhampton 1500 - 1715. Mild and mainly cloudy. 3 Perch: 2lb 4oz, 2lb 1oz, 1lb 7oz. Had to make the most of this mild spell with a dusk session for stripeys. Thankfully they'd read the script and whilst bites were at a premium every one resulted in a nice perch.

K&A Canal - Woolhampton 1400 - 1615 Mild, overcast and breezy with drizzly showers turning to rain. AT 10ºC. WT 9.1ºC 3 Perch; 1lb 9oz, 1lb 4oz, 13oz. 1 Pike 2lb 4oz. 2 Chub(lets) Mild snap had me heading for the canal in pursuit of stripeys. Didn't get a bite until 1530 then a flurry of fish around 4 o'clock - usual pattern for winter perching on the canal!
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1300 - 1600 Mild, cloudy and benign - perfect perching weather. AT 10ºC 9 Perch; 2lb 15oz, 1lb 13oz - the others all around 8-10oz. 1 Chub 1¼lb and a Rudd(!) The CRT have made it very difficult to locate big stripeys on the canal - by removing pretty much every bit of over hanging vegetation from miles of bank - however conditions were ideal for winter perch so a roving approach - travelling light and giving swims 30 mins or so before moving on was the plan for the afternoon - and 5th swim - bingo! Biggest perch for 3 seasons - delighted!
-
K&A Canal Thatcham & River Kennet - Arrowhead 0730 - 1315 Mild, breezy with light drizzly showers. 8 dace - all a 'nice' size (6-8oz class), 1 chublet & a gudgeon. Another fruitless perch hunt, not a bite (at least from something that didn't have claws!) on the canal so finished off with an hour on the river.
-
K&A Canal Enborne (& Speen Moors) 0715 - 1230 (with an hour at Speen in the middle) Cool, overcast with drizzly rain for a couple of hours. 1 Chub; 2lb 9oz. Fruitless search for a perch - not a single bite on the canal - and not a lot of interest on the river after the first cast chub!!
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 0700 - 1100 Cool, bright and sunny. 5 Perch - all around 6-10oz. The CRT really are a bunch of ****s! I rocked up at first light and made my way to a spot I knew held good perch - a nice bush and fallen branch on the far bank which produced 1lb+ perch (and some nice chub) for me last season - but which also produced a 3lb stripey last year (I've seen the pics!). This feature is on the widest part of the canal on the outside of a slight bend, a LONG way from the 'shipping line' and has caused boat users no problems for years. So why have the CRT seen fit to grub it out? I wonder how much revenue CRT get each year from angling clubs - coz they don't appear to give a **** about the aquatic environment - ALL my favourite perch spots on the K&A from Woolhampton to Marsh Benham have now been destroyed by these environmental terrorists over the past 2-3 years!

Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington 0645 - 1200 Frosty start with bright sunshine. AT -1ºC when I arrived, 14ºC when I packed up. 2 Chub; both just shy of 1½lb, 7 Skimmers; one of 2lb+ the rest a few ounces either side of 1lb, a doz small roach, 4 micro perch and 3 gudgeon. First autumn perching trip - but I guess a first proper frost and bright sunshine do not perfect perch conditions make. Even so persisted with lobs for the first 3 hours but every time the float went under it resulted in a bream (and both the chub). When I did get a perch they were smaller than the lob they had somehow managed to gorge! An annoying amount of boat traffic (unusual for here) also didn't help!

Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 0800 - 1500 Mild, mainly overcast and breezy (too breezy!) AT around 10-11ºC all day. 1 Pike; 4lb 6oz, A doz+ Perch - nothing over 8oz, 2 Chub (small), 3 Bleak. Another fruitless hunt for big stripeys. Wind was a real PITA blowing straight downstream and making presentation really difficult!
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 1000 - 1600 Mild, overcast and calm - a benign winter's day. AT around 10ºC all day. Canal VERY low - around 18 inches below what it should be - over-wintering barges had slipped their anchorages - clearly someone's left a sluice open somewhere! A dozen perch to 1¼lb (though most nowhere near that size!). 2 Chub; 2lb 9oz & a chublet. Slow day - not helped by the low water and the only barge of the day coming through at 1515 just as bites were starting to get prolific!! (By the time the swim had settled down there was only 10 mins of day light left - still time enough for my biggest stripey of the day!)

Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne * Northcroft Stream^ 0700 - 0945* 1000 - 1230^ Cold and bright start - clouding over by the time I left. 0ºC - 8ºC 7 Perch; 4 over 1lb, best 2 1lb 9oz & 2lb 0oz (hooray!)* 6 Dace, 4 Roach, 1 Gudgeon and a brownie.^ A lovely crisp morning - not the most ideal conditions for stripeys thankfully no one told the fish that. Had to contend with some really inconsiderate dog owners - one even threw a stick in for there dog right where I was fishing - stopping bites for nearly an hour. Another dog peed on my bag - I ended up having to hang it in a tree as pretty much every dog after that wanted to scent it as well!!! NOT impressed! Once my swim was bathed in full sun I wandered down to Northcroft in a fruitless hunt for some chub - glad to get away from the sodding dogs!

Kennet & Avon Canal - Woolhampton 0700 - 1200 Warm and overcast. 5 Perch; 3 over 1lb - best 1lb 11oz. 1 Pike; 3¼lb, a doz+ Roach, 1 Chublet, 1 Dace, 1 Rudd, 4 Gudgeon, 2 Bleak (8 different species!) New venue for me and one which might be promising on the perch front! Boat traffic was a total PITA - way busier than I experience on other parts of the canal.... ?
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Enborne 0700 - 1300 Calm and overcast. 15 perch'; 3 over 1lb, best 1lb 9oz. 1 Pike 3lb 11oz. A morning exploring likely spots along the length of the lower section - fished around half a dozen swims and had fish from most of them. All fish on lobs.
-
K&A Canal - Thatcham 0700 - 1000 Warm, overcast and still - perfect perching conditions - shame no one told the fish! 2 perch; both 12oz(ish) Slow morning in a favourite swim of old. Next perching trips will be exploring waters new!
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington 0645 - 1230 Bright start, rain from 1000. 6 Perch: 1¼lb & 5 small uns. 1 Chub - small. 7 Skimmers to 1lb, 2 doz roach - to 1lb, 2 Gudgeon and 3 Ruffe! First autumn perching session - which whilst it got off to a good start with the pounder first cast - didn't get any better. Loads of pred activity too - think they were pre-occupied with fry and ignoring my lobs. First EVER ruffe from the Kennet system - only other time I've caught the species was from the Loddon back in the 70's!

K&A Canal, Enborne & River Kennet, Speen Moors 0800 - 1300 Cool and Overcast, AT 6ºC. River up a bit with a tinge of colour. 3 Chub: 3lb 13oz with the other 2 a couple of ounces either side of 2lb. A frustrating morning on 2 counts. The plan was for a couple of hours perching followed by a day on the river. However, on arrival I was horrified to see that the CRT had been out with their chainsaws emasculating the vegetation on the far bank - bushes and overhanging trees - all gone. I didn't even recognise my favourite spot. Really hard to fathom the rationale for this - they weren't obstructing the boats - being a long way from the main channel. Anyways I fished for an hour or so without a bite - but did spy 4 cormorants - who were probably having a field day now the fish have no cover! My 2nd mis-calculation was not realising that there was a re-arranged match on. I did check before leaving but this was a postponed fixture from a fortnight ago when the canal was frozen. It was a pairs match as well with half the match anglers on Speen - occupying most of the swims I'd planned to visit - doh! Still Speen is a big water - and I headed off to the other end of the venue where I have caught chub fairly reliably in the past - and so it proved again - not many bites in total but when the float did go under my strike was met with solid resistance.

K&A Canal Enborne 0800 - 1115 River Kennet - Thatcham 1200 - 1430 Murky, mild and drizzly. Canal; 7 Perch to circa 1lb, 1 Pike 4lb 11oz. River: 1 Chub; 1½lb, 5 Grayling, 2 Dace, 2 Perch, 4 Brownies to 2lb+ Had planned to spend all morning hunting stripeys on the canal - but there was way too much boat (or rather canoe) activity for good sport. So switched to a couple of hours on the river - rather surprised to get so many grayling from here....
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 1230 - 1600 Cool, with milky sunshine. AT 8ºC WT 12.1ºC 1 Pike; 5lb 6oz. 5 Roach, 2 Dace, 2 Bleak. Blank perch trip! Spent the first couple of hours fishing (and feeding) mag - hoping to attract prey fish - but the only bite I had on lobs resulted in the pike.
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 0645 - 1130 Bright and sunny. AT 6º -> 10ºC. WT 10.4ºC 12 Dace. 1 Perch (small), 1 Pike (tiny!). Fished 3 new swims (for me), the first of the basis of some recently acquired 'intelligence'! In truth it wasn't ideal conditions for prospecting and whilst I did get a little interest in my lobs before the sun was up it was from a small perch and a micro pike! Will be back when conditions are more optimal!
-
Kennet & Avon Canal, Avington 0645 - 1200 Cool and overcast. AT 2º -> 8ºC. WT 10.6ºC 4 Perch; 2lb 5oz, 2lb 2oz, 1lb 10oz and a tiddler. 2 Chub 1lb 13oz & 2lb0oz. 14 Roach, 2 Dace and 5 Skimmers. Thought I was taking a bit of a gamble after the first proper frosts of the autumn - but a quick reading of the WT on arrival gave me cause for optimism. As it turned out the only takes I had on lobs were from the chub - with the perch arriving late in the morning on float fished maggot.
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 0730 - 1015 Calm and overcast. AT 13-15ºC. WT 13.9ºC 5 Perch; biggest 2, 1lb 10oz & 1lb 6oz. Perfect perch morning somewhat ruined by early boat traffic. Bites from the off - but after the first barge came through at 0830 I didn't get another touch!!!
-
Kennet & Avon Canal - Avington 0715 - 1215 Cool, and overcast. AT 6º -> 9ºC. WT 11.4ºC 6 Perch to 1lb 12oz (3 over lb). 3 Chub; all over 1lb - best 4lb 5oz. 15 Roach, 4 Dace, 1 Bream (circa 1½lb). Pleasant morning on this rather remote part of the canal - started off on lobs which accounted for all the perch and one of the chub. Switched to maggot for the last couple of hours hoping to snaffle some decent roach as per last autumn here - no big red fins but the 4lb chub was adequate compensation!
