  1. Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 0700 - 0930 Cool, calm and overcast - with 'milky' sunshine breaking through for last hour. 4ºC. WT a more promising 46ºF, little colour and quite a bit of flow. 2 Perch; 2lb 5oz & a tiddler. A struggle for bites in seemingly perfect conditions for stripeys - though in retrospect a dusk session may have been better. Both fish fell after 0830 when it was brighter with sun on the water.
  2. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0830 - 1330 Cool and mainly overcast - some 'milky' sunshine at times. AT 3º -> 6ºC. WT 45ºF (7ºC). River just about up to 'normal' levels - carrying a tinge of colour. 9 Perch (in order of capture): 2lb 11oz, tiddler, 2lb 8oz, 2lb 4oz, 2lb 3oz, 2lb 9oz, 2lb 15oz, 1lb 10oz, 2lb 9oz. 1 Pike 5lb 5oz, 1 Brown Trout, 2lb, 5 gudgeon. Cracking session (nearly 20lb of perch!) after an early morning change of plan due to not reading the match bookings! Had planned to target solely chub - but thankfully put in my lobs at the last minute! Pike and the 2-11 in the first 10 minutes then nothing so I went chub hunting (they've been conspicuous by their absence on this venue so far this season). Returned to the swim at 1130 and the perch had really switched on - had 8 more in little over an hour. All fish to trotted lobs (except the trout and gudgeon - caught on maggot).
  3. Middle Kennet Estate Water 0830 - 1630 Bright and breezey after heavy morning rain (we sat in the car waiting for it to stop). River coloured up in the morning but was fining down again by the time we packed up. Levels still quite low. 9 Chub - all quite small - biggest 2lb 7oz, 1 Perch 1lb 7oz, 13 Roach - best 2, 1lb 6oz & 1lb (just!) - most others around 6-8oz, 3 dozen Dace, ½ doz gudgeon, 2 Brownies - best 3½lb, 2 Rainbows - best 2¾lb. Pleasant day's trotting (once the rain stopped) spent with Paul. We were both looking for the big chub - and didn't really find them though Paul faired slightly better than me with 3 over 2lb to 3lb, but the fish seemed to be well scattered around the fishery not shoaled up. Got both of my 2 decent roach in the last hour - a very nice way to finish the day!
  4. Bucklebury Ponds 1000 - 1200 Overcast - becoming sunny. 8 Perch - all small save one which weighed 1¼lb (!!!) 1 roach. Short trip to use up some maggot. Surprisingly large perch for this place (Maybe they DO go bigger - Rusty!! )
  5. River Kennet, Newbury 0600 - 1030 Bright and sunny. 10 -> 15.5ºC. River lowest I've seen it all season and clear despite rain in the week. 6 Chub: 5lb 2oz, 2lb 5oz, 2lb 3oz, 1lb 10oz & 2 chublets (circa ¾lb), 1 Perch; 2lb 9oz, 9 Dace, 1 Grayling, 1 doz Roach, 2 doz Gudgeon. A very satisfactory morning's trotting. Perch just about last fish caught - from low, clear water bathed in bright sunshine - who says they feed best in low light levels!!!
  6. Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 0630 - 0900 Dull, overcast and mild. AT & WT 47ºF. Water quite clear. 4 Perch: (2lb 14oz, 2lb 6oz, 1lb 11oz & a tiddler), 2 Chub: 2lb 10oz & 1lb 14oz, 1 Pike 3lb. Perfect perch dawn - so somewhat surprised to find some chub taking up residence in my favourite perch swim. They were the first two fish I caught. Lost another at the net and then caught the pike so moved swims to (succesfully) find some perch! All fish on float fished lobs.
  7. Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 1400 - 1615 Dull, overcast and calm. AT 7ºC. WT 50ºF 7 Perch - in order of capture... 3lb 1oz, 2lb 13oz, 2lb2oz, 2lb 9oz, 2lb 13oz, 2lb 14oz, 2lb 10oz. Opportunistic trip - as was unexpectedly allowed home early for Christmas! Float fished lobs. Last 4 fish caught in the last 20mins. Early Christmas prezzie!
  8. Middle Kennet Estate Water 0800 - 1600 Cold and overcast 0ºC ->5ºC. River very coloured - very unusual for this stretch. 2 Chub (5lb 0oz, 1lb 6oz), 2 Perch (2lb 1oz, 1lb 11oz), 14 Dace (2 X11oz, 1X10oz), 4 Brown Trout - (best 2½lb) Bit of a struggle in a very coloured river. Both chub and 2 biggest trout on sweetcorn. Perch were first AND last fish of the day - one on maggot one on lobs. All dace were a good size - had 4 more around the 8oz mark. Paul had a very similar return - had a bigger perch than me, a small chub and a similar number of dace and brownies.....
  9. Kennet & Avon Canal - Nr Thatcham 1400 - 1615 Cold and clear. AT 7ºC -> 3ºC. WT 42ºF - canal carrying a little colour. 2 Perch - a fine brace - 3lb2oz & 2lb 9oz. 1 Pike, 8lb 6oz. A succesful dusk trip for stripeys - despite the cold bright conditions. Pike 1st cast (yet another worm caught pike) and biggest perch on the stroke of 4pm just as the light was fading fast.
  10. Kennet & Avon Canal - nr Thatcham 1400 - 1630 Overcast, mild with and upstream breeze.AT 13ºC. WT 51ºF. Water quite clear. 5 Perch (3lb 2oz, 2lb 6oz, 2lb 5oz, 2lb 3oz, 1lb14oz) 1 Pike (4¼lb), 1 Chub (c1lb) Couldn't pass up such perfect conditions for perching! All fish on float fished lobs and all caught after 1530 - a manic last hour of daylight!
  11. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0700 - 1100 Dull and overcast - some very light drizzle. AT 52ºF, WT 50ºC. River up a couple of inches - some colour but fining down. 7 Perch (2lb 13oz, 2lb 6oz, 2lb 5oz, 2lb 2oz, 1¼lb and 2 small-uns), 1 Trout (2¾lb), 1 Chub (small), ½doz Roach, 3 Gudgeon. Perfect conditions for perch - 2lbers all came in a rush between 0800 - 0900 - all caught on lobs. Smaller perch and trout form the weirpool on trotted maggot.
  12. Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 0715 - 1030 Clear and frosty - hazy sunshine. 0º -> 10ºC 2 Perch (1lb 15oz, 1lb 1oz) An exploratory wander up and down the canal - in sub-optimal conditions for perch. No bites in first 1½hrs - quite a bit of boat traffic too! Both fish on lobs.
  13. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0645 - 1100 Cool and overcast - ice on the car for the first time this autumn. 2º -> 10ºC. River at 'normal' levels. 5 Perch (2lb 15oz, 1lb 14oz and 3 little-uns), 5 Chub (1½lb and 4 chublets), 1 Pike (1¼lb!), 1 doz Roach, ½ doz Dace & Gudgeon. Perch and Jack on float fished lobs - biggest perch from Speen for 3 years. All other fish (apart from 2 chublets) on trotted Maggot. Both Perch in first ½hour of fishing.
  14. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0630 - 1100 Bright sunshine after a cool and misty start. 5º -> 15ºC. River quite low. 1 Pike (5lb 14oz), 8 Chub (4lb 9oz & 7 chublets), 3 Perch (1lb12oz, 1lb 5oz and a smallun), 1½ doz roach, gudgeon and dace (mainly roach). First session of the autumn hunting for big perch - though jacks and chub seemed to be occcupying their haunts from last year. All chub and the pike on lobs, most of the chublets were in th 12oz-1lb range - which is a good sign for future stocks. All perch on trotted maggot at the tail of the weir in bright sunshine!
  15. Middle Kennet 0800 - 1645 Bright and very breezy - one heavy shower. River high and coloured. 5 Perch (2lb 11oz, 2lb 6oz, 2lb 3oz, 2lb 0oz, 1lb 10oz), 1 Chub (1¼lb), 4 Doz+ Dace - almost all over 6oz - I weighed 9 which were all 11-12oz. 19 Brownies - Biggest 3lb 12oz, 1 Rainbow - 2½lb, 2 Roach (14oz), 2 Grayling, 3 Gudgeon! Treated me self to a Birthday Outing - alone with Paul. Did MUCH better than we had any right to expect given the coloured water. Paul had a similar return - though his biggest dace was a whopping 15oz and he had more chub and fewer perch than me - and less trout. All my perch came in the last 45 mins as the light faded and fell to lobs - otherwise all fish on trotted mag...
  16. River Kennet - Speen Moors 0745 - 1315 Showery/bright/showery. River up and carrying a little colour after overnight rain (forgot my thermometer). 1 Chub, 3lb 14oz and 8 chublet. 4 perch 2lb 3oz, 1lb 15oz, 1lb 13oz, 1lb 6oz. 3 doz dace,roach & gudgeon. Spent 1st 2 hours searching the usual spots for perch with float fished lobs without a touch. Switch to maggot brought all the silvers and the chub. Switched back to lobs for the last ½hour and had all 4 from a swim I haven't caught a perch from for 4/5 years!
  17. Kennet & Avon Canal - Thatcham 0745 - 1015 Cool, cloudy and calm. AT 41ºF -> 47.5ºF. WT 44ºF 7 Perch - 2lb 15oz, 2lb 3oz, 2lb, 1lb 8oz, 3<1lb. Dawn raid on a perfect perch morning. 6 fish in the first hour - only 1 bite after 0900! All fish to float fished lobs.
  18. K&A Canal - Thatcham 0715 - 0845 Bright and breezy - after heavy overnight rain (¾in fell yesterday). AT 46ºF. WT 48.5ºF 7 Perch (5 over lb - 3lb 3oz, 2lb 5oz, 1lb13oz, 1½lb, 1¼lb) 1 chublet Short session - as only had about 45 mins of 'good light' - good for perch that is - bites dried up when it got too bright. Water carrying a tinge of colour which would have helped too. All fish on lobs.
