  1. River Lambourn - Shaw 0900 - 1145 Benign & dull, with a few spots of rain. 9ºC. River fullest I've seen it at this time of year for quite a while! 12 Grayling. Had planned to go perching - but feeling a bit ropey at the moment and although I did get up for a dawn raid on the canal I decided I needed an extra 2 hours kip more than I needed a 3lb perch! (Yes I must be ill!) I still had to go out to get some bait in preparation for another raid on the Middle Kennet later in the week - so good excuse to wet a line (not that I usually need one)and have my 1st visit to Shaw this winter. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics - and nothing to trouble the scales. Met up with a couple of AN reprobates - Steve & Rusty who were shifting off downstream as I left!
  2. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1100 Cool, bright and breezy. 2º->6ºC 16 Grayling - biggest 1lb 2oz, 1 dace, 3 trout parr. A morning spent leap frogging swims with Paul - who had a near identical catch return (19 ladies and 1 dace). However where as Paul was "catch a couple and move on", 10 of my grayling were from one swim - should've been 11 as I lost a quite substantial grayling to a hook pull - the perils of using a size 18. 1st ever dace either Paul or I have ever caught on the Lambourn...
  3. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1130 Cool and Overcast. 2-5ºC. River low, VERY low for late January. 26 Grayling; 10 over 1lb(!). Best 2 both 1lb 10z. Change of plan due to footy being re-arranged for this afternoon had pencilled in a Speen session. Scratchy sort of morning until I found a shoal of nice, feeding, grayling - had only caught 7 by 1030 - so had a manic last hour (from the same spot too!)
  4. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1130 Bright after a frosty start - 1st frost of the month. River very low. 29 Grayling, 11 over 1lb (!!). Best 3; 1lb 14oz, 1lb 8oz, 1lb 7oz. 1 Roach - unweighed but needed the net. 1 Brown Trout parr. Pure co-incidence that my first visit of the season here corresponded to the 1st frosts of winter. Usual catch a couple and move on tactics until I found a pod of sizeable grayling feeding confidently under the branches of a willow. More importantly they were feeding competitively too - so much so that within a couple of minutes of feeding, and not fishing, the water boiled everytime a sprinkling of freebies hit the surface. So it was off with ALL the shot - and switching to white maggot so I could see it easier resulted in a dozen or so fish in no time at all - watching each time for the bait to be taken before striking. All fish came off the bottom to nail the bait within seconds of casting out - exciting stuff! Most of the 1lb+ fish came from this swim including the biggest which I thought HAD to be a 2lber - HUGE dorsal fin - was determined to catch it - even pulling the float out of the water if another lesser fish started to make a bee-line for the hookbait. Funny how it suddenly got smaller when it was in the net!!!
  5. River Lambourn - Newbury 0630 - 0900 Bright and breezey. AT 8ºC 9 Grayling - most (very) small though I did manage a couple of 'pounders' biggest 1lb 5oz. 2 Roach - both needed the net, best 12oz. On a late at work so perfect excuse to have a couple of hours on the bank. Grayling not really having it - bright sun and a stiff downstream breeze not helping - bumped more than I landed. Quite a few fingerling fish - obviously had a succesful spawning.
  6. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1045 Cool, overcast with some short showers early on. AT 0º->3ºC. River up a couple of inches on my last visit (Christmas Eve). 15 Grayling; 5 over 1lb - best 2, 1lb 10oz & 1lb 7oz. 2 Brownies & 1 roach - all small. Quick trotting session - catch a couple and move on. Venue 'busy' with Anglersneters!!!
  7. River Lambourn - Shaw O800 - 1130 Cold and overcast with the odd flurry of snow. -3ºC -> +1ºC 25 Grayling; 3 over 1lb and 3 more just an ounce or two shy. Best 1lb 7oz. 12 Brown trout, 1 Roach. Pleasant morning's trotting in the cold. Unusually for here nearly all the fish came from just 2 swims, with just a couple of fish to show from the ½doz+ other swims I tried. Most of the trout were no more than fingerlings - A sign of a succesful breeding season methinks!
  8. River Lambourn - Newbury 0800 - 1100 Cool & Overcast. 8-10ºC. River low, as per usual this time of year! 14 Grayling - 5 over 1lb - best 2, 1lb 9oz & 1lb 6oz. 7 Roach - all a 'nice' size - in need of a landing net! The 2 I popped on the scales went 11 & 13oz but the rest weren't much smaller. 1 Brownie (small). Pleasant morning's trotting. Fish very spooky in the low water didn't get more than 1 from any swim EXCEPT the first swim I dropped into which produced 11 fish - including most of the roach - very strange!
  9. River Lambourn - Newbury 0615 - 0900 Cold and overcast 2ºC. River clear as ever! 11 Grayling, 7 between 1lb 6oz - 1lb 12oz (most over 1½lb) Day off work to take Matt to a University open day - so an excuse to sneak a couple of hours on the river. Real catch a couple and move on tactics and really good average size of fish.
  10. River Lambourn - Newbury 0830 - 1130 Cold, bright & sunny. -2.0º -> 2.0ºC 13 Grayling; 8 over 1lb (!) best 3, 1lb 12oz, 1lb 11oz, 1lb 8oz. Cracking little session after a slow start. Had planned to go perching on the canal but bottled it when I saw how 'sub-optimal' conditions were. Blanked in first 3 swims I fished - and didn't get more than 2 from any swim. Works look nearly finished - looking good! Biggest grayling from the Lambourn this season.
  11. River Lambourn - Newbury 1245-1345 & 1400 - 1545 Still Cold! 7 Grayling; (best 3 - 1lb 6oz, 1lb 2oz, 15oz), 3 Roach. 7 (!!) other anglers on Shaw when we arrived so after a grayling or two each, Paul and I moved to somewhere less crowded - with worthwhile results - especially for Paul who ended up with 11 grayling - 5 of which were better than 1lb - bested by a fish of 1lb 8oz. He also had time to winkle out a 12oz roach.
  12. River Lambourn - Shaw 1130 - 1400 Cold, and sunny. -2ºC -> 1ºC. River at normal levels - crystal clear as ever! 13 Grayling: best 2, 1lb 7oz & 1lb 1oz. 1 brown trout parr. Lovely afternoon in the cold! Fish were quite spooky - never caught more than 2 from any one spot. Experiment with pomergranate seeds a failure - skins are too thin for a good hook hold!
  13. River Lambourn - Shaw 0830 - 1230 Bright and breezey. 2º -> 8ºc. River still low - this wet November's rains haven't percolated through the chalk yet! 22 Grayling - 4 over 1lb, best 1lb 6oz. A dozen brownies - all small. Pleasant morning's trotting.
  14. River Lambourn - Shaw 1300 - 1600 Cold and cloudy, 1ºC. River quite 'full' and clear - suspect the springs have 'sprung' on the downs... 17 Grayling - 4 'pounders', best 3 - 1lb 12oz, 1lb 10oz, 1lb 9oz (!!!), 4 Roach - all small, 3 Brownies - 1 circa ¾lb. Blimey! Where did they come from? Biggest ever grayling from here - and my first grayling over 1½lb from here since Oct 2001. All bigger fish from same swim - and all caught within first ¼ hour of fishing! Very pleasant afternoons trotting!
  15. River Lambourn - Newbury 0815 - 1030 Cold and clear -1ºC -> 2ºC. River at normal levels. 7 Grayling - best 1lb 2oz, 2 small brownies. Short session as I needed to pop out for some maggots for Monday's trip...
  16. River Lambourn - Shaw/Newbury 0715 - 1230 Cold and overcast 1ºC -> 2ºC 14 Grayling - 5 pounders - best 1lb 5oz, 5 Roach, 7 Brownies. A trip with Paul - and a change of plan - had originally planned a morning's perching - but we decided that conditions were too 'sub-optimal' for stripeys!!!
  17. River Lambourn - Nr Newbury 0845 - 1100 Overcast and chilly 5ºC. River at normal levels - and gin clear as usual! 9 Grayling - all a nice size, best 4 - 1lb 10oz, 1lb 7oz, 1lb 6oz, 1lb 3oz. 3 Brownies - all small. Nearly didn't go as the weather forecast had been pretty dire - glad I did however - very pleasant couple of hours trotting.
  18. River Lambourn - Shaw 0800 - 1200 Overcast and chilly with a couple of short, sharp showers. 2º -> 6ºC. River at normal levels with a lot of debris and leaf litter (EA were cleaning the Gauge Weir at the top of the venue!) 17 Grayling (best 1lb 5oz), 5 Roach, 1 Brown Trout Catch a couple and move on - fished a dozen swims - never had more than 2 fish from any of them. Trotted red maggot.
  19. River Lambourn - Shaw 0730 - 1030 Sunny and cold -2ºC -> 4ºC. River very high (As high as I've ever seen it) with a little colour. 9 Grayling (2 'pounders - biggest 1lb 5oz), 8 roach (best 1lb 2oz and another just shy of 1lb - rest small) 4 brownies (2 over 1lb) & 5 Salmon Parr. Struggle for bites at first - got a little easier with some cloud cover - most fish on the 'church' stretch. 2nd (&3rd) respectable roach from here this winter.
  20. River Lambourn - Shaw 0830 - 1100 Cold and clear 1ºC -> 4ºC. River up and carrying a tinge of colour after heavy rain yesterday. 7 Grayling - 2 'pounders', best 1lb 4oz, 4 Brownies, 2 Roach, 1 Salmon Parr. As ever a reliable winter fallback for when the Kennet is up and coloured. Bites hard to get but not impossible - bigger fish on the Church stretch.
  21. River Lambourn - Newbury 0730 - 1030 Rain, continual unrelenting rain! 5ºC 5 Grayling (2 'pounders', best 1lb 7oz), 12 roach, 2 Brownies (biggest 1¾lb) Rather hoped I'd sneak an hour of so of daylight before the rains came but the 1st drops started to fall on my 1st trot through. A couple of roach were ½ decent - around 8-10oz. All grayling a decent size (10oz+).
  22. River Lambourn - Shaw 0915 - 1215 Cold and overcast - 5ºC. River moderate height and gin clear 16 Grayling (2 pounders - best 1lb 6oz), 4 Brownies - biggest 1½lb. Trotted maggot. Usual 'catch a couple and move on' tactics. Fished a dozen swims and had a fish from all of them...
